Am I having a nervous breakdown???

Posted: Mar 23, 2010

This is really weird.  Did you ever have an experience like this:  You log on to start work, and everything you hear sounds strange and everything you type looks incorrect??  Even the simplest of words look unfamiliar and foreign.  It's sort of like you never did this before.  Is this the first sign of a nervous breakdown??

PLEASE HELP ME.

Thanks.

This has happened to be periodically before but this week is bad enough that I'd like to take off work because I am so afraid of making an error. Thankfully my word expander and account familiarity help.

I wondered if anyone else experienced this. It can be called feeling "out of sorts" but this inability to process written information is like shell shock.

I have tried going for long brisk walks, increased my coffee, keep computer use to work only and try not to worry about the casualties of this economy of which I am one.

There is a great medication called Provigil - very expensive but acts as a mental stimulant and would help me I think.

check your BP and your blood sugar! Take an aspirin! - nm

Thanks for the input to all who responded. I'm logging off and putting teabags on my eyes and maybe take a nap. Maybe I'm too old, maybe I'm burning out, maybe I've been doing this way too long. Anyway, thanks for the input.

I know what you described and no you are not going crazy, it's like a short circuit in your brain, overwhelmness, fatigue, stress can bring these feelings on and when there is a combination of various feelings it does feel like you are going crazy. You need to focus on a different task when this happens, take a deep breath or distract your mind by calling a friend and saying hi, this will remaneuver the brain to think of something else. Get enough sleep, eat healthy, get some exercise and cut down on caffeine, energy drinks, etc. If these things don't help, see a LCSW or your primary doctor can prescribe xanax to help you cope, but trust me you are not going crazy.

not necessarily - anon

It could be anxiety as others have mentioned. It could also be migraine, as those can happen without actual headaches even if you get the visual symptoms. I get something similar to what you described when I'm exhausted or didn't get enough sleep, but I have a sleep disorder so that may not apply to you.

My best advice would be to walk away from the computer a bit, maybe take an aspirin or ibuprofen, and rest for a while. Also keep a note of when these things happen and, if it's a pattern, see a doctor.

I Am A Nervous WreckFeb 20, 2012
My husband has a passive-aggressive personality, and he's often acted out through driving when he's annoyed/mad about something. He denies it, but I don't think I'm paranoid. I'm so sick of this and it's affecting how I feel about him overall. I am constantly on the lookout because he's gawking and not paying attention to what he's doing. Last week he nearly ran a red light, turned in front of another car that had the right of way, and swerv ...

Getting Nervous About VerdictMay 06, 2013
I hope  the verdict comes in tomorrow for Jodi Arias.  I was a bit anxious about it today.  Hope we don't have the shocker we had with C.A. a few years back.  I was watching Dr. Drew tonight, and Travis' best friend, Chris Hughes and his wife, Sky were on as guests again.  They are such lovely people and always share some special memory they have of Travis.  He (Travis) was loved by so many people.  Keeping my fingers crossed for justice. ...

Getting Nervous About Friend's SonJun 30, 2016
Have not heard from my friend about her son or whether her son survived the surgery. Got a bad feeling. She is so good to contact me. I was supposed to go to doctor today out of town and my car gave me fits. Well, now car repairs but not till next week. Hate that everything seems to happen on a holiday. I hope things finally settle down for me about finances and car repairs and health soon. I also hope I am wrong about my friend's son. I hope I hear soon. ...

So Nervous About Target Debit CardApr 05, 2013
I was shopping at Target recently and a clerk told me about the Target debit card where you automatically get 5% off on purchases. I jumped on it, filled out an application, and now I'm a serious nervous wreck when I think about all the information I gave up, which was everything - name, address, phone number, social security number, driver's license and bank account number. What an idiot! I regret it a thousand times over now. I'm so paranoid about identify theft, I can' ...
