Person around suddenly with allergies, does that

Posted: Jun 30, 2014

I have a lady who comes to clean every other week. I have 4 cats and they are all long haired and yes they do shed. This person has now worked here probably at least 3 months or longer. This past week she said was sick, visited her doctor with chest tightness. I asked if she had ever had asthma. I did as a child and had 2 bad recurrences as an adult and this sounds somewhat like that. Her doctor went down a list of things and one thing asked, are you around animals. I would think if allergic to cats, something would have shown sooner but not 100% sure. What do you think? ;

I can see that happening...SM - Old Anon

It may have taken her body a few months to mount an assault against the allergens in the form of reactive airways disease. If she's new to asthma as a diagnosis, it may be scary to her; but it can be controlled with the proper inhalers. Of course, avoidance of the offending allergens is always an option. You can reassure her on that account, and you may not lose your cleaning lady.

OP here- am not really afraid of losing her and - how would avoidance be carried out

because the 4 furkids are the kings/queens here. I asked if she had asthma, that was not brought up by her physician but as I know how I have felt before thought possible. I guess if I had to ever face the possibility of being allergic, sure would be in store for a lot of inhalers/injections because of my love for the cats.

I think the poster was just making a general statement about avoiding things that make one feel allergic; like, in this case, the cleaning girl can opt to not work in your house.

I do believe it can take a while for an allergy to be so bad that it finally got her lower respiratory tract. She may have been having vague symptoms prior. And a person can become allergic to something at any time in their life, even if they weren't allergic before.

The other possibility is that she has had a slight allergy and didn't know it, but with the 4 cats and her having a lot of "hands on" at your house, it was just too much.
For the first time ever she cleaned up a section of - my garage, now that was a dirt

job in the fact had not been cleaned in the past 6 years and that was the first time for that. She works not even 8 hour day every 2 weeks so if that is too much or if the cats are her issue I have another person on standby. I think might be the garage cleanout though.
Suggestion ... N95 particulate respirator - Wonderful things

The garage thing might be it. Pollen, dust, mold spores, maybe some mouse stuff ... you never know. More likely than the cats, anyway.

Look on Amazon for N95 particulate respirators. They are disposable masks. Not expensive at all. 3M makes some.

I use the green ones that are good for respiratory infections as well as dust. Truly a blessing. I cleaned out an apartment that had years of mold from water leaks. It reeked. Without the mask, I started wheezing before I got in the place. With the mask, I was in there all day with no problems at all. Couldn't smell a thing with the mask, either.

I don't even vacuum without one now.

If it is animals, she may be exposed to other animals other days on top of what she is exposed to at your home. Could be a combination of allergens also. Is there some reason you think it was your particular house or your cats that caused this?

I would also suspect the cleaning supplies she may be inhaling, particularly if she cleans multiple homes and is exposed to chemicals all day every day.
Being as she is only here for what I consider - such a short time period

every other week, less than 8 hours a day, the cats never came to my mind when she told me she went to the doctor for chest tightness. My first thought was perhaps asthma as I had as a kid and twice in adulthood it has come back and I asked her then did she have asthma or did the doctor think that. She is a caregiver for an elderly woman 5 days a week, think maybe little basic housework there, no other jobs other than these 2. She stays at that morning job about 6 hours, then 1 day every 2 weeks comes here for about 4 or 5 hours I would say. I think her doctor asked her do you think could be this or that and then when he said animals maybe she thought cats but those did not come to mind as she has been here for about the last 3 months, twice a month for around 4-5 hours at any given time. I thought perhaps her cleaning the garage would have played more a part than the cats. I like her but if she cannot work then understandable, just don't think the cats are the cause here. As far as the chemicals, she told me what cleaning solution she liked to use. I got that at Publix so only uses the 1 here, no combinations on my end.

Dogs With Allergies...Feb 23, 2012
My dogs definitely cannot have poultry or corn, and wheat is questionable.  I am trying to find dental chews/biscuits.  I'm using Zuke's Z-bones right now but the problem is that one of my dogs is just biting/breaking it into chunks and swallowing the chunks, not much good for his teeth and gums!  He chews his crunchy dog food and regular treats so I was hoping maybe I could find some dental biscuits of some sort, but everything I'm finding has wheat or chicken ...

Question Regarding Allergies. (sm)May 05, 2010
My 24-year-old daughter started breaking out in a rash yesterday.  At first she thought maybe it was a heat rash, but then overnight she started to feel a little feverish.  This morning she woke up and the rash was tripled in amount of bumps and all over her body.  Plus she has been dizzy and very nauseated.  She went to urgent care and they told her that it was an allergic reaction to shrimp she had eaten.   They just gave her a shot of prednisone and some Benadryl ...

Cat With Possible Food Allergies?Apr 24, 2013
Does anyone have a cat with food allergies?  My white/tabby mix seems to always be itching but does not have fleas.  His white ears are frequently pink and warm and he scratches quite a bit.  Last night I noticed him licking his belly and it, too, was quite pink. We have been round and round with this kitty since we inherited him from my MIL.  He was always a puker and I have improved that condition with different food and hairball treats, but I'm wondering if the pukin ...

OK, Something That My DH Does Is SuddenlyNov 23, 2010
I don't know how to put this delicately, so I'm just gonna throw it out there...lately, it seems that my DH only touches me in 3 places...YES, those 3 places; 2 boobs and the v-jayjay! It's really REALLY getting on my nerves but I don't know how to say nicely, "Hey, quit groping me all the time!" I did mention that I feel like he only touches me "there" but he naturally said that wasn't true. It irritates me when we are on the couch together watching TV and he has his ha ...

Jobs Report Suddenly AccurateMar 11, 2017
All during his campaign Donald Trump denied the truth of job reports and unemployment statistics.  Now that there is one that is favorable to him, he says it is accurate.  It would be funny if it weren't so sad.  I must say he is taking lying to an entirely new level.  How can Trump supporters believe anything he says? ...

like the room was spinning out of control and I could not stop it.  That lasted about 1 minute I think followed by terrible nausea.  I thought I would throw up but didn't.  Then it kind of subsided over the next couple hours, and now at the end of day I feel okay but still a little nauseous.  Wow - what was THAT????  I've never had that experience before and I hope to never again!  I started looking online but there are so many things that could cause this ...

Going From Night Person To Morning Person - Not E-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzNov 04, 2013
I keep waking up at 4:30 am - a job I'm just training for (a low-stress job and only 1 marathon week a month!) starts at 6 am.  So I'm trying to be a morning person.  Constitutionally I really don't like the idea of going to bed at 9 pm, or 10 pm.  Although I have more energy during the day when I follow a morning schedule. I'm afraid to read a book now, I think if I do I will fall asleep instantly.  The night is young!  ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... ...

When he started in with the bellering that they do, everyone else in the room was trying to keep straight faces. We just sat there and, as he went on and on and on, we just looked at each other. Then of course we all avoided him, but we didn't 'engage' him in conversation.  After his tirade, he just sat there with a mad look on his face until it was time to leave.
