omits “under God” from Pledge of Allegiance.
Think it was a slip-up?
"For the first time in history a lay person gave today’s inaugural invocation and apparently didn’t mention God very much at all – even omitting “under God” from the Pledge of Allegiance."
http://www.therightscoop.com/lay-person-delivering-inaugural-invocation-omits-under-god-from-pledge-of-allegiance/;
I don't have a problem with a lay person - giving the invocation.

There are many godly peoplewho have a heart for the Lord. I do take exception to the intentional-or-not-intentional omission of "under God" from the Pledge of Allegience. I hope it was unintentional.
The original Pledge... - pfft

...did not contain the "under God" clause. No matter, it's hardly grounds for getting your granny panties in a twist.
Yep. Merlie Evers-Williams was born in 1933. - sm

The Pledge of Allegiance was not officially changed to include "under God" until 1954, the year she became an adult. The version she learned as a child was exactly the one she repeated today:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
I was born in 1948 and started school at age 5. I was taught the same version, which was used at my school until 1955, two years later. It seemed awkward to add that phrase after having recited the earlier version and it took me a while to be comfortable with that change, so it's perfectly understandable to me how she might have never changed it after having recited it the other way throughout her school age years.
I sense you are trying to insult the poster - too bad

Nice liberal try, though.

and I am happy to include all Americans in the Pledge of Allegiance, whether they believe in God or not.
What are you saying? Only clergy - can lead public prayer?
[ In Reply To ..]
Lay people lead prayers in all sorts of public settings. I see no reason why an inauguration should be any different.
I remember when her husband was assassinated by De La Beckwith of the White Citizen's Council and KKK, 50 years ago this June. He left behind a 30-year-old widow with three children, ages 9, 8 and 3. Four months later, our president was assassinated, one month before my 15th birthday.
For me, Myrlie Evers personifies the spirit of survival, perseverance, endurance and strength. Her presence at the inauguration and delivery of the invocation was a great inspiration and can never be diminished by detractors trying to dredge up phony outrage over yet another one of their nonissues.
Yeah, and I wouldn't even consider her a lay - person

Maybe OP didn't know who she was? Or the history of the Pledge. Both understandable, I guess.
Thanks to you for this tribute, and to the above posters for enlightening everyone on the history of the Pledge.
she was brilliant - sm

it's a shame that folks nowadays are so attached to division. This is a woman we would have all rallied around once for her wisdom, sensibility, and experience.

Our founding fathers were not religious at all. Hence, leaving England to get away from religious oppression. I wonder why those who believe are so threatened by those who don't? There should be room for both and no one should stuff their beliefs or non-beliefs down anyone's throat.
Live and let live.

always have. Still do. Even as a first grader, I wondered why we mentioned God in the Pledge of Allegiance. Always have. Still do.

Going From Night Person To Morning Person - Not E-zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzNov 04, 2013I keep waking up at 4:30 am - a job I'm just training for (a low-stress job and only 1 marathon week a month!) starts at 6 am. So I'm trying to be a morning person. Constitutionally I really don't like the idea of going to bed at 9 pm, or 10 pm. Although I have more energy during the day when I follow a morning schedule.
I'm afraid to read a book now, I think if I do I will fall asleep instantly. The night is young! ZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..... ...

What Is A Person To Do?May 23, 2013Got a call from my doctor's office this a.m. Need to come in for my annual. I told them I have no money to do an exam and lab tests. Yes, I do have insurance but I do not make enough to pay a doctor bill and lab bill on what I make. I make too much for sliding scale payments. They were not happy but neither am I. With the amount of money I make, it takes every penny to pay for the necessities such as rent, utilities, food, etc.

I Actually Met A Birther In Person RecentlyApr 01, 2011When he started in with the bellering that they do, everyone else in the room was trying to keep straight faces. We just sat there and, as he went on and on and on, we just looked at each other. Then of course we all avoided him, but we didn't 'engage' him in conversation. After his tirade, he just sat there with a mad look on his face until it was time to leave.

How Do You Feel When A Religious PersonJun 04, 2013I have to say, I don't want anybody knocking on my door without calling first. I take no offense in particular to religious people doing it, but I get more of them than anyone else, so that's why I'm using this forum.
