No Halloween candy for you: N.D. woman to hand out letters to fat kids

Posted: Oct 31, 2013

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/oct/30/nd-woman-hand-out-fat-letters-instead-candy-hallow/ Happy Halloween (to those who celebrate it) When I saw this on the news I thought it was a joke at first. Okay, maybe this lady has a point but IMO she had 2 options: 1. Do not hand out anything. Turn your light off, lock the door, stay inside, and keep your mouth shut. They are not your kids. 2. Hand out healthy snacks or non-food items like festive Halloween pencils, erasers, spider rings, etc. instead of that letter. I'm not a parent but I would be insulted if I got that handed to me/my child. Yes, childhood obesity is a problem but it's the parents' responsibility to feed their children healthy foods (within budget of course b/c the healthy food cost more than candy) BUT I do think if any child wants to dress up and celebrate trick or treating and have fun getting candy (that's free to them and saves the parents some money) then they should be able to do that! Thoughts? p.s. I hope she didn't get egged or TP'd;

That's ridiculous. - Your 2 ideas are all that is needed.

Handing out healthy snacks or simply not participating are totally appropriate, but giving fat kids a letter? Don't they have enough to deal with already? The majority of the time, kids are fat because their parents aren't doing their jobs properly. So why punish the kids? How sad.

I hope - sm

She gets her house egged.

Candy has been handed out for years and years - and hear this

The 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and ongoing. Years ago no obesity problem. In the 60s graduating HS in class of over 200 not one single obese person. We had fast food then, McDonald's, KFC about a block from my home, grandmother served dessert with dinner every night, ice cream, pie, cake, something sweet. I don't agree always parent's fault. Daphne Oz (Dr. Oz's daughter) stated yesterday on her show, "The Chew", she was obese as a young girl, not her family's fault because they had good food, close family but her fault because of what she wanted to eat. I really without a doubt think instead of looking at fast foods, large cola drinks that people should look more towards their food sources, i.e. chemicals including steroids that are in the meats we eat. Chicken, beef bulked up quicker and faster to get to market and then we eat. This was not something that happened years ago and I absolutely without a doubt feel like major contributing factor now.

Another aspect is that kids do not...... - Mom22dogs

.....get enough exercise, thanks to such things as video games. I grew up in the 60s and we used to go outside and play and burn off all those extra calories.

We did too, I grew up in the 50s. We walked everywhere - another MT

I loved trick or treating when I was a kid. I was an only child until I was 11 so I didn't have to share any candy with my siblings. I would give my parents the stuff I didn't like though (how nice of me LOL). But I was limited to 1-2 pieces a night as a treat and I played outside/rode bikes/ran around and burned it off. I was stick skinny. I don't know if parents ration candy these days. I don't have kids so I don't know how it is nowadays.

It was a hoax - xx

The story came from the same radio show that ran the call from the "deer-crossing sign" lady a year go, and the caller was the same person who did that hoax call. The radio show hosts didn't even bother to have a different person make the call.

I hope they TP'd the daylights out of her house! I don't wish for any real property damage, but a little TP or egg/tomago wake-up call would be fine. I was never a fat kid (played sports) but saw the agony some of the heaviers kids went through at the hands of bullies. Shame on this busybody lady. She is not the weight cop of the world.

Me too, my daughter was a "fat kid" and my son - was bullied because

he was rather small and not into sports. They are now 33 and 27 and well adjusted, but it hurts the parents as much as the kids.

Halloween TVOct 23, 2009
I was just going through the tv listings looking for things this week that me and my kids can watch together.  I am a sucker for holiday tv around Halloween and Christmas time.  I can watch the same thing year after year and never get tired and this has been for almost 30 years of my life that I can remember!  Anyways, this year I am totally disappointed with the lineup.  The ABC family channel has their 13 Nights of Halloween but they are playing movies like The Goonies and ...

A Little Halloween TriviaNov 01, 2009
Here's a little Halloween trivia I heard in an interview...Actually about the movie "Halloween". The mask that the character Michael Myers wears.  Does anyone know whose face it really is.  I never realized this until I saw him interviewed.  It's.....William Shatner.   Now that kind of ruined everything cos we were watching the movie and DH felt the desire to use Captain Kirk's voice through the whole movie.  LOL ...

I'm looking for some halloween costume ideas for a party my DH and I have been invited to.  We'd like to dress as a couple, but we don't have to.  We're both on the plus size.  I'm a size 18 (I'm larger across the chest than anywhere) and my DH is a size 38/40 tall (he carries his weight in his tummy and across the chest). Halloween Is Coming! Any Suggestions For Sep 27, 2014
stays on and doesn't sweat off after a night of dancing and partying?  (My face will be painted like a skull).  The costume store paint is greasy and smears off easily.   Right now I'm experimenting with white eyeliner (the stick kind you use on the lower lid water line) and so far, it stays on, but isn't as opaque as I'd like.  Have any of you done a successful skull-face makeup job that stayed on and didn't smear?   ...

Halloween Traditions/my Neighbor Told Me I'm Going ToOct 16, 2009
This is kind of a double post so I didn't take up board space!   FIRST:  I have a new neighbor and we had introduced herself when she moved in and we were all friendly.  I recently decorated for H-ween.  Nothing too much just a big lighted up pumpkin, an inflatable ghost, and a couple of those wind socks on the porch. Anyway yesterday her and a couple of her church girlfriends came over and knocked on my door.  I answered all polite and then she told me that H ...

The judge said orders that keep those requests secret violate the First Amendment. NPR's Carrie Johnson filed this report for our Newscast unit: "The demands known as 'national security letters' became a quick and popular tool for the FBI to gather inf ...

You Got To Hand It To Donald TrumpMay 05, 2011
Earlier today I was reading that regulars at the Indy 500 were really disgusted that Donald Trump had been asked to drive the pace car. Some had considered dropping out and others were trying to get him dropped. Now it appears that Mr. Trump has decided it would be "inappropriate" for him to drive the pace car, because he may be soon announcing that he is running for President.  I used to think he was fun to watch when he pulled pranks and talked endlessly about how great he himself is, bu ...
