New neighbor brought unwanted pests

Posted: May 9, 2017

I am currently saving up for moving, but it has been rough with my income not being enough to cover moving costs. What can be done temporarily to eliminate and keep roaches out of the work computer until I can get moved? I am in no position financially to replace my work computer right now. My new neighbor moved in about two months ago and since a few days after they moved in I have been seeing roaches at my house. I had previously had no problem and have been living here for 10 years now. The neighbors on the other side have also been having problems with roaches since the new neighbors moved in. I have had problems with them getting in my work computer. The landlord has had Terminex here and for a few days after they spray we don't see any roaches, but they start coming back. We were told by the landlord that the new neighbors are not liable for damages caused by the roaches and all he can do is have Terminex out to spray. I feel physically sick to my stomach every time I see them. I am beyond frustrated and just want to scream and cry. It is expensive to replace a computer and I am afraid I may end up doing just that.

Borax - mt

Put borax around everything. Very inexpensive. They will die and be gone.

Thank you! Going to get some now. - OP

I would seriously check into that fact, the new people - not liable for what they caused SM

check with the city health department. You never had a problem before, now all of a sudden these people move in and there's a problem? That tells me somebody is liable for this problem and it's not you.

if they're getting into your work computer??? they are after food and water, and a dark cool place to live. i dont see why they go into a computer where it's hot and noisy with a fan running and the whole mechanism in there causing constant disruption.

we had much the same problem in an apartment complex a year or so ago. we were accused of starting it, maintenance came in to spray, i was livid as to why are we sprayed and blamed when WE are not the problem? I told management to look elsewhere. I talked to other tenants, and the maintenance guy himself told me he had problems at his place just down the row from us and someone else just moved out recently. Sure enough, finally nagged management enough, they entered the abandoned apartment and there was the problem.

Somebody else needs to be liable for replacement cost of that computer if it needs to be done, and it's not you.

I despise roaches! They are virtually indestructable - We have a Terminix

[ In Reply To ..]
contract...never had a roach problem until recently, probably because of an abnormal amount rain, is what Terminix says. It's not an apartment so can't really blame any new neighbors in our case. Had Terminix do extra services in the kitchen, under the house, etc, and THEY ARE STILL HERE! Last straw was this morning when I went to make coffee and several little buggers came out...I nearly threw up...I had to throw the coffee maker out! I don't think I'll EVER be able to make a cup of coffee again. So I called Terminix again and told them if we can get rid of them I am going to have to change pest control companies. So sick of taking everything out of the cabinets and putting it back! I've tried the Borax, didn't do a thing. I'm about ready to set the entire house on fire. I'd move if I could afford to, but I don't think I need to elaborate on that.

Pest Companies - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Not only are you going through the bug problem, if that's not bad enough, you've got to wonder about the honesty of the pest company. I've heard that some of these creeps water down the poison just to keep coming back out to "treat" your home. Might be better off on your own with some other types of remedies...
That's exactly what they do. I have a friend who is - an Orkin Man. sm

They use a product called Demand CS. Pretty expensive, $39.49 on Ebay, and I do my own, mix my own, have done it for 10 years with a 2-gallon sprayer. I spray the whole exterior once a year. The bugs die before they even get to the house so if you have pets, beware, because they could get sick if they eat a bug or dead bug. It is nice to see dead bugs in the garage before they get to the house. Hate them!!

Combat - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Try Combat roach killing bait stations. They have ones for large or small roaches. Home Depot has them if you have trouble finding them. You have to replace the baits every 3 months. I had a problem with large roaches in the laundry room. I put the large baits out there (3 of them), 4 in the kitchen, 1 in the bathroom. I don't have a roach problem anymore. Only one I saw was when I replaced the baits and it was a dead one.

Here is a link for several remedies - sm

Maybe one will help.

Advion, a DuPont product - miracle paste! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The price has gone up from about $14 to about $24 in the last 5 years, but it is very well worth it. Purchase on Amazon, and can probably find some YouTube video on it. The stuff is like crack for cockroaches.

I had a problem about 6 years ago. Tried everything, but finally had to call an exterminator - very expensive. It was about the 3rd visit when I spotted an empty tube of the stuff in my outside garbage bin. That's what he was using, paying probably less than $10 for 3-4 tubes at the time. I immediately cancelled the service, and swore if I ever spotted roaches again, that's what I would buy. It's been over 5 years... the Advion is still in my Amazon cart "saved for later," and I've not had a single roach since. TRUTH!

boric acid powder - keep it in a bottle like a

[ In Reply To ..]
ketchup bottle and spray it outside your front door and around your apartment perimeter, behind your applicances and under kitchen and bathroom sinks. Do this daily!. Stop up your sinks so no creepy crawlies can climb up the dry pipes at night. Spray around the inside of your apartment perimeter too. After you do this daily for about a month, you can probably cut back to once a week, then once a month.

My mom and I had a daycare for 10 years and we refused to use a bug service because of the possible toxicities to the children. Small amounts of boric acid powder are not toxic. You would have to swallow something like 20 ounces to feel sick from it, but bugs hate it. We RARELY had cockroaches and we live in the deep south were they fly in open doors plus crawl in through cracks.

I wish you the best. I'm saving my money to move out in December because my neighbor smokes in the apartment under me (I've been here 10 years, he has been here 6 months). I'm thinking about living at KOA camps all over the country to enjoy whatever time I have left :)

Roaches - Hey Orkin Man

[ In Reply To ..]
They probably hitched a ride with your neighbors to their new residence, maybe they were in a storage room, basement or in some packing boxes. That's a landlord issue now, at least he had people come out and spray. Talk to your neighbors, don't be mad at them, they probably don't like it any better than you. If several people are involved, maybe you all need to work on a solution. This works for ants so maybe it will work for roaches too, but they sell traps that you can place in strategic places in your garage or basement. I live in a climate where we've never had them so I'm not really sure. I lived in one complex where we had mice. They used D-Con and then people found dead mice in the swimming pool, that smell was nasty but I digress. I hope you are able to move soon, in the meanwhile maybe you need to get rid of that computer.

Trying some other suggestions - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
They are literally running through the Borax like nothing is there. I am not in an apartment, but might as well be as close as the houses are. Thank you to all who replied.

Did you resolve the bug problem - yet?

[ In Reply To ..]
If not, Ortho Home Defense worked for me when the ants took over my house a couple years back. I live in Florida so it works on everything else too. Sprayed every day for 2 weeks and then once a month for always. Try it if nothing else works for you. You can buy it at Walmart or your grocery store, or you can get it online. Hope they are gone soon.

Neighbor's Barking DogSep 21, 2011
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle a neighbor's barking dog?  This is a hound dog who barks incessantly all day long at the house kitty corner to ours.  I've left a note at the residence about this and have called animal control when it continued, and he is still at it.  I've tried closing up my house and running white noise in my office, but nothing seems to drown him out.  It seems talking to them would be pointless at this juncture as they hav ...

Vent About My NeighborSep 23, 2010
Okay, so I have a neighbor who is unemployed.  I know this cos he and his other half are always having screaming shouting matches and she yells he doesn't work and doesn't contribute, doesn't drive, eats her food, smokes, won't even watch "her kid", blah, blah, blah. So..what does he do?  He goes and gets himself a motorcycle.  So he has no license to drive it and it sits there in the yard (not their parking area, but their back yard that faces our back yard) a ...

Getting Frustrated With NeighborJun 30, 2011
I have one grandchild who for the first 3 years of his little life lived too far away for me to visit regularly.  Now, my son and family live about 6 hours away and I get the grandson one week every other month and it's been great.  I've got a whole room set up, a little backyard kiddie pool, jungle gym, treehouse, the whole thing!  (DH is a hobby man and made so much himself!) Anyway, my neighbor has her grandson quite often and has let me know it is because she does n ...

Barking Dog And NeighborFeb 22, 2014
Ok.  Here's the story.  We have a Golden whom we named Luke Skybarker, and he has lived up to his name in every sense.  He will be 12 next month. Five years ago the house next door went up for sale.  I was already well aware of Luke's proclivities and when the house was being shown when I was outside I would make mention of this fact for the prospective buyers to take into consideration (no, they old neighbor didn't move out because of him.  She died.) &n ...

Problem With NeighborJun 21, 2014
I'm starting to have a problem with my neighbor. We live in a community of little cottages that are very close together. The decks of the individual cottages are actually joined, so there is really only a few feet between our back door and their back door. They just had a baby, and the other day, he came over and was complaining to my husband about his smoke coming in their window. We are not supposed to smoke inside the unit, and when we moved in, the property manager said that eve ...

NEIGHBOR ISSUESAug 22, 2015
There are 3 families with young children who live next to me.  My children are grown and gone.  All of the children like to come to my house, probably because I don't have to discipline them, I'm like a grandmother. Anyway, I will label them family A, B and C.  Family A is no longer allowed to play with family B or C - long story. I enjoy having all of the children at my house - I miss having children around.  I have never had this problem before and I'm not ...

My Neighbor's Yard Is A Mess!!Nov 10, 2009
We live sort of in the country on a cul-de-sac gravel road.  All of the houses are less than 5 years old and sit on 1-1/2 to 3 acre lots.  It is beautfil in here with all the big hardwood trees and nice big yards.  Everyone keeps their yards mowed and clean EXCEPT of course the one next door to me.  Our lot is 1-1/2 acres and his is 3 acres.  He mows a strip down where our property lines meet and on the other side of his yard where the property line meets the other neigh ...

Advice About Neighbor Trying To Be HelpfulSep 20, 2016
I am looking for a way to let him know that I am very grateful for his help, but having that kind of noise around is distracting while I am working.  I have actually told him this before, but I am not sure he understood that I meant for all time.  To top it off, when he's mowing he makes my dogs bark, and of course that is worse than the mowing itself.  I usually try to mow before he has a chance to get to it, but with all the rain we've had it is hard to do.  I wor ...

How Do You Deal With A Neighbor That Has No Regard For AnyoneJul 16, 2011
How would you deal with a neighbor in a townhouse semidetached type neighborhood who has no regard for anyone at all and they just take over everything.  They burn a firepit every night with skids which they shouldnt be and smoke goes in everyones house and ashes all over the cars.  They used to have their dog out in other yards and the kids just everywhere doing whatever.  They live like they own everything around them.  We did put up a fence and that helped some of this but ...

I Am The Worst Neighbor In The WorldApr 13, 2010
If I could buy a cabin in the Rocky Mountains on 40 acres of land, I would.  Except I can't. I live in apartments because that is my only financial option (long story, lots of people have a similar one), so I really should try to accept my situation and live a happy life.  Except I just want things the way I want things and I believe since I've been single and working from home since 1997, I have become a hermit crab and like it enough I am not motivated to change. My downs ...

So, My Highly Intrusive Neighbor...Oct 09, 2012
She is nosey, in everyone's business and exceptionally bossy.  I had thrown away a basket and came home from vacation to a very long voicemail about how she had found the basket, retrieved it and gave it to another neighbor.  She then berrated me REPEATEDLY about throwing away things that other people can use, and informed me that she is European (no kidding) and Europeans do not throw beautiful things away. I have no idea how she figured out it was my basket to begin with, but a ...

Halloween Traditions/my Neighbor Told Me I'm Going ToOct 16, 2009
This is kind of a double post so I didn't take up board space!   FIRST:  I have a new neighbor and we had introduced herself when she moved in and we were all friendly.  I recently decorated for H-ween.  Nothing too much just a big lighted up pumpkin, an inflatable ghost, and a couple of those wind socks on the porch. Anyway yesterday her and a couple of her church girlfriends came over and knocked on my door.  I answered all polite and then she told me that H ...

Loud Cars/Inconsiderate NeighborOct 22, 2014
I know there is nothing anyone can do about the problem, but please allow me to just vent.  I live in a neighborhood where the homes are very close together.  It's not the greatest area in town, but it works for me.  Everyone on the block is quiet, and there is usually no trouble at all.  However, the one family across the street consists of a dad (who seems really nice), his daughter and his son.  The children are grown and have jobs, but still living at home.  ...

leave my house key with her just in case. I have animals here at home and my husband is home like every other day as far as the watering and feeding things. She and I basically share "her" cat. She lets him be an inside/outside wanderer and he comes to my house and gets treats. I have talked with her occasionally over the years, never visited in her home, she has been in mine once. She is a part-time RN in NICU here at one of our close by hospitals so pretty responsible. I would love to be a ...

If The Border Situation Isn't Brought Under ControlJun 11, 2014
Make no mistake.  The Cantor defeat last night was a wake-up call to ALL the politicians who think they'd like to push immigration reform while the absolute calamity on the border goes unchecked.
