If something comes up that benefits you personally because of Obamacare, I bet you'd be mighty happy it was in place. My DH and I were turned down for health ins because at age 59, he had inquired of his doctor about symptoms of BPH. The doc told him that he might possibly need a microwave treatment in the future if it became bothersome enough. DH decided it wasn't enough of a problem and completely dropped the issue. Came back to haunt us when we applied because the insurance company said he MIGHT have to have prostate surgery. We actually inquired as to why we were turned down and were told this was the reason. I want to be able to obtain ins in spite of preexisting conditions....don't you?

Republicans plan on keeping that in place. - Read up.

insurance companies from refusing coverage to people with pre-existing conditions as long as they had continuous coverage. That is a far cry from what Obamacare does where insurance companies cannot refuse ANYONE with a pre-existing condition under ANY circumstance. Romney also said that "Insurance companies should be allowed to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions."
it's really a shame - sm

It is already the law that one cannot be refused insurance if one has had continuous coverage (Certificate of Insurability). Does Romney think people are so stupid they don't realize this? Oops. Nevermind.

In the current economic climate, it seems to me that it would be a boon if Americans felt free to move to where the jobs are, or move to less costly areas of the country. Instead, most of us have to stay exactly where we are or lose our health insurance (and that would include all the "children" under the age of 27). Tying health insurance to our jobs impairs the mobility of a great many Americans, and does not seem to serve a free society.
I agree--this insurance problem is over- - whelming. Here's a little...

...more info. I'm the one whose DH's slightly enlarged prostate at age 59 (no kidding--whose prostate ISN"T slightly enlarged at that age??). We were actually still carrying continuous coverage, for 17+ years, and were covered by my insurance with one of the smaller MTSOs at the time we applied and were turned down. I'm not positive, but my understanding is that the certificate of insurability would have only assure that you could get a policy, but they could disallow coverage for certain health problems (like the prostate). My DH is one of the healthiest men I know, even among a lot younger men, and we almost never have to go to the doctor; so I was so shocked at being turned down that I didn't even THINK about showing my certificate of insurability. We were under the gun at the time because we were trying to get it in place so I could turn down the MTSO job when my hospital outsourced us, so I had a deadline to get on the MTSO's insurance if I needed it.

I agree--the insurance problem is tying people to jobs they hate. Such was the case with me and feeling like I was totally trapped in that MTSO job because I HAD TO HAVE health insurance, so I stayed way longer than I should have--it almost crushed my soul.

We tried to explain to the ins co that turned us down that the problem wasn't severe enough to warrant surgery, and my DH had chosen not to have any treatment or surgery done; but their rule was that if you're turned down by them for ANY reason, even if it was an underwriter error or misunderstanding, you can't even reapply with them for, I think it was, 2 years.

People are trapped by insurance issues, and we NEED the changes that Obamacare is bringing...IMO.
Oops, I "misspoke," so to speak! - (see message)

Just re-read my post, and, duhhhh.....we were actually still covered by my insurance with the HOSPITAL where I had worked for 17+ years at the time we tried applying for our own insurance....were still within the window of having to pick up the MTSO's insurance when my hospital insurance ended. But, like I said, we had only a small window to decide whether or not we needed to get on the MTSO's insurance.

We eventually reapplied with Blue Cross/Blue Shield and were able to get approved, just before my smaller MTSO was swallowed up by M*Modal, so that allowed me to decline the M*Modal position, just in the nick of time!! Otherwise, I'd STILL probably be trapped in a job with M*Modal, against my will.

I'm hoping when the insurance choices open up (hopefully...if Obamacare is left to remain in place) for individuals in 2013, we will be able to obtain something a little more affordable. If Romney is elected, he has stated that one of the first things he would do is do away with the Affordable Care Act, so who knows where we'll be at that point if it happens. :-(

We can't take all this instability!!!! It's so unfair--the politicians already HAVE good health insurance provided by us, the taxpayers.

Expanding MedicareDec 08, 2009
Senate Democrats are discussing the idea of expanding Medicare by lowering the age at which the elderly could enter the government-run insurance program, Democratic sources on the Hill tell the Huffington Post. The proposal would lower the age of eligibility for Medicare from 65 to 55, though an age limit of 60 has also been suggested. Crucial details -- such as the timing of the implementation of such a reform -- were not provided due to the sensitivity and ongoing nature of the deliberations. A ...

CBO: MEDICARE FIX THROWS HCR IN THE REDMar 20, 2010
The CBO has now said that the "Medicare Fix", which the Democrats are trying to pass separate from the HCR bill, throws their scheme into the red, eating up all of the claimed $200 billion in deficit reduction and instead adding $56 billion more. For those who don't know, there are programmed reductions in Medicare reimbursements to physicians that are supposed to "kick in" automatically, and every year Congress passes a bill to reverse those cuts for the simple reason that such reductio ...

Medicare End Of Life SpendingDec 11, 2012
Original thread is getting pretty far down and I am curious because I have yet to hear a politican other than Mitch Daniels bring up this issue without screaming about killing grandma or using death panels.  When Medicare spends 25% of it's resources on end of life treatment then it's time for everyone to discuss this issue in a reasonable fashion.  Personally, and as one who is on Medicare, I feel that everyone who applies should have to include their advanced directives whi ...
