Obama love-in has little impact on

Obama love-in has little impact on how Canadians view Americans, poll finds
By Colin Perkel (CP) – 23 hours ago

TORONTO — What a difference a president makes. Well not that much actually, according to a new poll on Canadian attitudes toward Americans.
The survey to be released Monday suggests Canadians view U.S. President Barack Obama far more favourably and with considerably less contempt than they did his predecessor, George W. Bush.

At the same time, according to the poll, Obama has had little by way of a halo effect: Canadians view Americans in much the same light as they did four years ago, when Bush was at the height of his presidential reign.

"There are underlying, enduring currents of skepticism, distrust and even perhaps anti-Americanism in Canada which (Obama's) election has not fundamentally changed," said Andrew Cohen, president of the Historica-Dominion Institute.

The Innovative Research poll for the institute, which coincides with the first anniversary of Obama's milestone election as the first black president in the U.S., finds 86 per cent of Canadians asked view him favourably.
Just seven per cent don't like what they see.

By contrast, a similar poll in November 2005 indicated that 73 per cent didn't like Bush. Only 21 per cent viewed him positively.

Obama was viewed "very favourably" by almost one in two Canadians, compared to just one in 20 feeling that way toward Bush, according to the poll obtained by The Canadian Press.

However, the White House incumbent has had little effect on how Canadians feel toward Americans.

"People have a slightly more positive view of the U.S (under Obama)," Simon McDougall, senior consultant with Innovative Research, said from Montreal.

"But really, the big story is that it hasn't changed that much what they think of the country."

Under Obama, 71 per cent indicated a favourable view of Americans, just three points higher than under Bush in 2005.

Similarly, Obama's popularity appeared to have had little influence on whether Canadians see the United States as a force for good in the world.
Canadians split almost down the middle on that question - with Quebecers holding the most jaundiced view.

Asked whether they feel at home in the U.S., 48 per cent of Canadians surveyed said they did, while 40 per cent said they did not.

Cohen called that surprising "given all that we have in common as two peoples."

Among Canadians, Quebecers in particular, are likely to feel out of place in the United States, with only one in three saying they feel at home south of the border.

The roiling debate over health care in the United States appears to have made Canadians feel even better about their own system.

In 2005, 71 per cent of Canadians said they would get better care here in case of serious illness. That pecentage has now grown to 77 per cent.
The Historica-Dominion Institute is a national charitable organization focused on promoting a greater understanding of Canada's history and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

The survey of 1,018 Canadians taken Oct. 22 to Oct. 26 is said to have a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points 19 times out of 20 for its national results.

The international world is starting to support us again - Colleen

if this is any indication.

No they aren't. Nice try....NOT - Hmmm

Your link does not prove the international world is starting to support us. Your link is nothing more than just a few people who like Obama. It does not show that the “international world” is supporting us. You really think that because someone wrote a message on a piece of paper saying “well done” that this means the entire international world is supporting us again. There were only 40 pics there. You think those 40 pics represent the entire world? The world is made up of over 6 billion people. These 40 pics does not represent over 6 billion people. Plus we don’t really know if more than one of these people submitted a picture twice. For every person on this website there are thousands and thousands of others who do not. I personally know more than 40 people, half who live in other countries. So if I create a website and post all their messages about what they think I could say this is what the international community thinks of U.S.? No it would not fly and neither does this. Canada’s opinion alone has not changed of the U.S. Neither has other countries. Certainly not the middle east. They are part of the international community also. I’d say nice try, but it wasn’t even close.

I don['t know all 6 billion - NJ

The people I know in other countries support Obama and are very grateful we turned from the likes of Bush.

You mention you know people elsewhere. What do they tell you?

NJ
What I do know - Hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
My friends and family in Canada are not starting to support us again. Their viewpoint of us has not changed. In fact there are a lot of Canadians here that still do not think highly of us. My relatives in England also say their viewpoint of America has not changed. It wasn’t good with Bush in, but she says they don’t think any better of us because we have Obama. She always reminds me that no matter what president they put in the two parties are no different. We just have a new talking head. She told me Germany does not think any better of us either. She said in Europe there are people who like Obama, but for as many people who like him there are equal who don’t. And I also know that the middle east does not love America now just because Obama is in.

And what I do know is that 40 pictures that people put up on a website do not represent 6 billion people of the international communities.
I was traveling internationally for most of October....sm - oldtimer

and EVERY person that I spoke to had renewed hope that our country is headed in the right direction after the fiasco of the Bush presidency. That is not to say that they have a different opinion of the American people as a whole and are amazed at the right wing retoric being spewn about their health care systems that are just not true. They said "do not believe what you are hearing from the opponents of health care reform".
Oh, I thought they thought we were spoiled brats/idiots who just put a spoiled brat/idiot in the Whi - Thanks for the update, whew!

Leave that "we" out of there. My vote most certainly did not go to Obama. Some of us did research on him and saw right thru him MONTHS before the election.

"We" researched him and knew his history and background, friends, etc. and we had enough sense not to vote for him.

Funny how a post will make you realize that the "spoiled brats/idjits who just put a spoiled brat/idjit in the Whi". Takes an even stronger person to admit it.

Thanks...we forgive you.

Perhaps we should differentiate between what other countries think of Americans and what other countries think of Obama. Americans, as a whole, do not rank anywhere near as well as they think they do in the rest of the worlds' eyes. The stereotype of a typical American is fat, lazy, greedy, loud, self-centered, and not too bright.

Obama, on the other hand, is well-received by other countries that we should be able to call friend. Bush was working on us going it alone and po'd many of those friends. They're coming back now that the cowboy is gone.

Can you substantiate this? Do you have facts? Or is this just your opinion?

*sound familiar?*
No problem, glad to ^^ - NJ

My sources include a doctor and a software engineer in London, an
ESL teacher and a sports coach in Malaysia, a stewardess in Singapore, a lighting technician in New Zealand, and too-many-to-count in Canada (mostly Quebec and Ontario, one each in Manitoba and British Columbia.) I grew up in a tourist town in Maine where I made many Canadian friends. The rest are friends/relatives of my better half's and/or online friends we've known for over a decade. The internet is a wonderful thing, doncha know ^^

One would have to live under a rock not to know how the stereotypical American is portrayed or how the rest of the world press sees Obama vs. Bush. Must be cold and dank down there.

If you don't like me citing real people, perhaps you only believe in radio talk shows? People who tell you how to think instead of engaging in conversations about what both they and you might think? No matter, here are the links I doubt will be visited ;)

So now you don't like being asked to provide proof to back up your claims. We are just supposed to take your word. When you ask us in just about everything we post that you don't agree with to provide links to back up our claims. It's not called doing work for others, it's called substantiating what you say.

Nice!

Again, it's kinda hard not to know Bush turned off much of the world and Obama is much more warmly received. You may argue that it's because of charisma or lies or anything else you want, but to argue it's not true is senseless.

Why should I have to prove something so obvious?

Well received? The French president reamed him out. Ahmadinejad has no fear of him. How many world leaders do you think actually respected Bush also respect Obama? They view him as WEAK. WEAK.

Well it's pretty apparent O has taken a few steps in the RIGHT direction - me

[ In Reply To ..]
But I'd hardly expect *you* to notice LOL. You are so busy trying to refute the OP, that you haven't stopped to think just how far in the dumpster of international opinion we had sunk
under the Bush regime.

I'd say since O has not INVADED a country who can't defend itself - under false pretenses - since he took office to be one HUGE step in the right direction.

I never said it was proof of anything. - Colleen

For the record though, I have not seen you post anything other than opinion either. However, I do personally believe that generally we as Americans are perceived badly and that got worse with Bush. I think that most people around the world are like Obama better, as do I. That is my opinion, and it is likely going to stay that way. My son is a fencer and meets many fencers from around the world. Most he has talked to hated Bush, and so far this year, most approve of Obama. I know this does not reflect the opinions of over 6 billion people. I does reflect my opinion however.
