Talking about his mystery box his grandfather bought him at a magic store in NYC when he was a kid. He brought it to the talk and has never opened it. It is just fascinating to me to hear how he uses that box as a metaphor in Lost (the hatch) and anything else he does, how the creative mind works.

I loved Phuc Tran's talk! - A linguistic talk about the subjunctive.

[ In Reply To ..]
He and his family escaped from Vietnam in the 70s and moved to the USA. They only barely got out and with some dumb luck, as he describes.

So Phuc Tran, now a linguist, moved here as a child and grew up in the US, so he is a native English speaker but his older family members don't have the same grasp of the English language.

In the Vietnamese language apparently they do not have the subjunctive mood as we use in English, like "I could have done this," "I should have done that," etc., and so they just don't think in those terms.

In his TED talk he has really funny and sweet descriptions of conversations he has with his older Vietnamese family members, who do not see the point of wondering what could have been.

I don't think I am describing it very well, but it is an awesome talk! (Link below:)

Fiscal Cliff TalksDec 17, 2012
I’m opposed to an automatic debt limit extension that President Obama wants. You can’t let a President have the power over raising the debt limit because it would weaken the power of Congress. The President would be able to raise the debt limit every time he felt it would be necessary without a balanced budget or spending cuts. There would be a point where the country would be unable to pay the debt back and we would be another Greece. I’m hoping The GOP sticks to their guns ab ...

EU And US Free Trade TalksFeb 13, 2013
It will be interesting to see how this affects the US economy--here's a little of what we are looking at:   One aim of the free-trade agreement would be to eliminate or reduce tariffs - taxes that apply to imported goods. For both the EU and US average tariffs are already low, below 3% on one measure. But further reductions could nonetheless stimulate additional trade and there are some areas where tariffs are much higher, notably food. Beyond that, the negotiations would try to re ...

Tea Party Republicans Love Love Love Ted CruzOct 18, 2013
even among Republicans, according to a survey from Pew Research. But the group is still potent within the Republican Party — which means that Sen. Ted Cruz gets a bit of good news on an otherwise bleak day. "Tea Party" is a necessarily vague affiliation. There are members of Tea Party groups, of course, but Pew largely had to allow poll respondents to self identify. And a lot of Republicans did so. About four-in-ten (41%) Republicans and Republican leaners agree with the Tea Pa ...

(Reuters) - The world powers' interim nuclear accord with Iran coupled with U.S. President Barack Obama's call for political reform in Gulf Arab countries has rattled Washington's traditional allies in the region. Fearing change at home could play into the hands of Iran, their rival for influence across the Middle East, Gulf Arab leaders will have much to disagree over with Obama at a summit he has invited them to at Camp David and is expected soon. I Love Verizon, NOT!Sep 26, 2010
First of all, I had my phone service with Verizon and I have a digital recorder for incoming dictation with MCI with a totally different number. Last month I got a good deal with Comcast for my phone service and was tired of the expense of Verizon so I switched. In the meantime, I paid my Verizon bill in full. Next, I get a bill from Verizon crediting me for service I didn't use, and took my final bill down to $16 instead of $56. So, they owe me a credit, right? Yesterday, I got a bi ...
