Husband seriously considering joining the Navy

Posted: Jan 8, 2014

He started thinking about the military a few months back.  He went to a recruiter yesterday.  He made a 92 on the practice ASVAB (highest is 99) so he's good to go there.  He does have to lose about 25 pounds so that is the reason for the delay. I am behind him 100% and proud of him for at least trying to turn his life around.  He has been a musician but after years of unsuccessful attempts he is realizing at 33 he will probably never reach the fame he so desperately wants.  So, he has decided to join since this is the last year he can do so and get an education.  I told him it is never to late to learn.  I am back in school myself for social work.

So the point of my post:  Any Navy wives out there? What to expect during basic training money wise? I know they don't get paid until after they are through with it.  I need to know how to plan financially so we won't be totally destitute during that time.  Do you generally get to go with them to the base that they are stationed at?  We live near and my husband works at an Army base but I know this is much different from the Navy as obiovusly they are out on boats for months at a time.

Any info is much appreciated!

If the Navy is anything like the Air Force - xx

if your husband has musical talent, especially if he can play one or more instruments, he could get into one of the Navy musical units. If he is hoping to get training in a different career field, that may not be what he wants to do, but if he wants to use his musical talent in the Navy, he should make his musical skills known to the recruiter and at every step along the way as he is processing and training.

I was in the Air Force, so things may be different in the Navy, but I would expect not too different with regard to the musical units. The folks who went into the musical units made rank very quickly, much more quickly than everyone else, so that might be something to keep in mind when he is deciding what he wants to do.

Wishing him the best!

wow great advice thanks. I will most definitely pass this along to him - Hopefully soon to be Navy wife

He can research the various options - xx

for musicians in the Navy ahead of time so he has an idea of what is available and which opportunity is the best fit for him. However, if he wants to be in a musical unit and the one he wants is not available but they offer him some other type of musical opportunity, he should consider taking it. It is very likely that after a while he might be able to transfer to the one he wants if he does not get into it the first time.

Also, if he cannot get into a musical unit right out of boot camp, he should go ahead and do the other training available to him but keep trying for the musical opportunities every time he has a chance. They recruit from within, so not getting in on the first try does not mean he will never get to use his music in the Navy.
sweet thanks! keep the suggestions coming! - I am forwarding this to his inbox

I don't have a husband who was in the Navy, but I do want to say a "thank you" to your husband for being willing to defend our country. Please thank him for me. I respect and support our military.

I sure will and thank you for your kind words - n/m

Not an Army wife - but...

...kudos to your husband for wanting to better himself. I do hope that he didn't just go in for the perks. He CAN get called to duty. Please always know this in the back of your mind. The whole idea is so that we have strong men and women to defend our country; the education, etc., are perks, incentives.

Best of luck to you. You and your husband need to keep your minds and souls open to that he may have to do battle one day, and you are both commended for your duty!

We value our men and women of the forces---they help keep our country safe!

yes he said if a war breaks out he wants to be on a ship - one reason why he picked Navy

thank you for your kind words!

Sorry, I said Army - Meant Navy-see msg

I know in the back of my head that they are all different branches and that there is some playful banter competition amongst them, but nonetheless, I should have addressed Navy, not Army--apologies to you.

Either way, I think the scope of all is the same; that is, to do good by our country.

Bless you for seeing what may really need to be done, and not just going in for the perks.

I always shake the hands of military when I see them in a restaurant or whatever, and thank them for their service. I so like to believe they all go in for the good of the country.

Best to you and thank you!

You can look up the requirements for military musicians online. They usually have degrees in music and are selected by auditions. It is highly competitive. It isn't really a choice at the recruiter's office. There are sometimes music opportunities on a more informal basis at duty stations, though.

My suggestion would be for your husband to choose something that translates into a civilian job. He can complete a degree in the Navy and get a job using his Navy background as experience. Anything medical is a sure bet--corpsman, OR tech, radiology tech, lab tech.

If he is offered the opportunity for OCS, he should take it.

Granted it has been a very long time, but we were paid during basic training. If he goes in as an E1 though, it isn't a lot of money at all. I imagine these days it is all electronic deposit.

You will be able to go where he is stationed, depending on where that is. If he gets overseas, a lot of bases do not allow spouses/family for E3 and below. I was in Iceland and base housing (no option for off-base housing) was E4 and above only, and there was a waiting list close to 9 months back then. Things of course change, but this was my experience.

As far as playing an instrument, you can do that in the military, but like someone else mentioned, very competitive! My husband played in a band at the local bars when off duty and had a blast.

Yes, you do get paid - X-Navy

basic training just like any other job, although it may not be all that much. Depending on his career choice (assuming he gets in) there may be a LOT of separation from the family involved, especially if he ends up on a ship. You didn't mention what instrument he plays, but Navy band units consist of pretty much professional caliber musicians, and are only a tiny percentage of all sailors.

Choosing corpsman (medical, which is what I was)can provide some good civilian job skills, but most likely will lead to being stationed with a Marine unit and likely these days in a war zone, something recruiters often "forget" to mention. Some guys actually relish this, but it is something to think about, as it can be very dangerous. I was offered corpsman when I flunked out of electronics school which was pretty much sending me to be cannon fodder. It was a short course, a cross between EMT and LPN, but can lead to nursing or other specialties. However, before most in my class could qualify for that, they had to serve with Marines which was not so bad since it was back in the peaceful and partying '80s. We did plenty of camping out in freezing temps, hiking for miles, exercising, digging holes, firing weapons and some medical care, and I have a lot of fond memories of it. Since I was single and younger, traveling and relocating was not so much of a problem.

Bottom line, if your husband actually does get into the Navy (I hear they are very selective these days), it will be a seriously life altering event for you and your family (sometimes not for the best, as military life is far from sunshine and roses even in the best of times, especially for family folks).

Good luck!

If he is serious about losing weight, have him join a bootcamp class or crossfit class in your area if one is available. I do one 3 nights a week and we cover everything in the hour - yoga, weights, cardio, strength, balance, running. It's a killer class but I toned up quickly.

My cousin's husband played the drums in the Army for about 10 years.. he then got out of the music part and did computers for another 10 and then retired. He loved being in the Army band BUT be forewarned that he will NEVER be home on a holiday.. he will be performing somewhere..

but don't they have to spend 6 months at a time on a ship? - sm

I seriously dated a Navy guy several years ago and he spent 6 months at a time on a ship in the middle of who knows where with a bunch of other guys who did the same.

No, not if they are not assigned to a ship - There are fixed installations

I have decided I'm tired of being in the part that busts my hind end trying to pay my bills and taxes, including over 1000 a month for health insurance for two people (which went up over 300.00 because of Obamacare already).    So, I am going to quit 2 of my 3 jobs, and go get some food stamps and perhaps apply for disability.  I truly believe in helping my fellow citizens that NEED help out - but come on, it can't be the few supporting the many and that is where w ...

I went to the movie Saturday. You almost have to rob a bank to go now. The popcorn for the medium size was $7.00. Ticket prices before 5 o'clock were $8.00 per person regardless of age. This got me to thinking about AARP. I do not think the prices would be any different for the movies but for other things. Just caught a bit of this story. They arrested a terrorist and he's claiming they punched him? Now they are on trial????? Where's the justice??? Navy Seals Able To Save 22 Women And ChildrenMay 05, 2011
Each day I grow more impressed with what the SEALs were able to do:  According to Jim Miklaszewski on msnbc.com: The U.S. officials describing the operation said the SEALs carefully gathered up 22 women and children to ensure they were not harmed. Some of the women were put in “flexi-cuffs” the plastic straps used to bind someone’s hands at the wrists, and left them for Pakistani security forces to discover. So in the midst of this tense (to say the least) situation, the ...
