AARP. I am thinking about joining and

Posted: Sep 14, 2015

I went to the movie Saturday. You almost have to rob a bank to go now. The popcorn for the medium size was $7.00. Ticket prices before 5 o'clock were $8.00 per person regardless of age. This got me to thinking about AARP. I do not think the prices would be any different for the movies but for other things. If anyone has AARP could you tell me a little about the savings you have found. TIA;

Conned by them. - sm

I lost my insurance at one point a few years ago. Rather than go COBRA, I called AARP, joined their organization and went through their lengthy on-line application for health insurance. After 2 hours of filling out information and talking with someone on the phone, I hit the submit button. Within 1 minute of the submission, I was declined by their insurance because I was too high a risk. At the time, I was overweight and had borderline diabetes. They took my money for a year's membership and I got nothing but advertisement for a year. They were not there for me. I have never opened another thing from them. I ended up getting COBRA and paid approximately $500/month for 3 months.

I am sure others have good experiences, but I did not and I will not partake of their practices.

AARP lobbies for the interests of Senior Citizens - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
They lobby for a particular policy that is good for seniors, not based on who the political party is. It may be that a particular party is much better for seniors.

One of the great things about the new health care system is that you can get affordable coverage without Cobra now. As you said, your example above was a few years ago. I am so glad that I am able to quit my job now without worrying about insurance coverage as a factor.

AARP - Not a member

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not a member and still don't know if I want to join, they send me info all the time. I don't know if they offer movie discounts, a senior citizen discount is something that theaters might offer individually. I have family members who say they get good deals on car insurance, but I compared what they offer to my current plan and it was not any better. I still have health insurance through my employer. I'm not sure about the other perks, maybe hotel discounts. I think it all balances out when a person considers that they are paying annual dues. I think they are political in that they lobby for senior citizen issues.

Interested in retirement issues - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would like more information on having a good retirement--financial, best places to spend the winter and/or live, Medicare supplement information, housing and care options as you get older, senior health, volunteerism, travel.

Is AARP good for that?

Their website will probably have all that info. I've - been getting stuff in the mail from

them weekly it seems ever since I turned 50.

No AARP For Me - see msg

AARP donates big to a political party that goes against our political view points, so we see no reason to contribute to them.

As to the movies, we haven't been to a movie in 10 (maybe more) years. If you have a DVD player, you can pretty much rent whatever you want through a DVD movie place (not sure I'm allowed to mention names), but in the end, it's definitely cheaper than going to the movies. Nowadays, the "new" movies come up on DVD faster than days gone by, so if you don't mind waiting just a little bit, it will be on DVD in no time.

We pay a low monthly fee and get pretty much all the movies we want for less than what you probably spent that one time in the movies.

If you want travel and other discounts, check out AAA (Triple-A). We belong, and not only do we get road service, we also get discounts on all sorts of things, and also have our car insurance and home insurance through them for a song. I forget what it costs, but we are getting a lot for our money and they are not affiliated with any political party.

OP- not against my political views but was not - discussing politics here

[ In Reply To ..]
I can afford the movies, just did not know, or really paid attention, to the prices charged now. I occasionally get Redbox movies but not many of those. I have 2 different road services, one with a 2014 car and then my insurance company both offering so not interested in that. I travel but usually use 1 company that is online or plan the trips myself, that is not an interest. Glad it was not the other party or I sure would have looked the other way, thanks for letting me know and looked it up.

I'm an AARP member. The best thing AARP offers is sm - Lifer

[ In Reply To ..]
its monthly magazine--lots of interesting articles about people and celebrities my age. That's about it, though. I didn't buy into their Medicare supplement plans, instead got an advantage plan. I'm bombarded by their ads, both online and snail mail, which is just a waste of paper, but it does give the post office some business.

Same here, check out AMAC. Pretty much the same coverage - as AARP but they don't

donate money to Democrats like AARP. Once AARP became political and promoted Obamacare, I dumped them and went to the other.

There is something called 60plus.org and americanseniors.org you might want to check out, too.

OP- I am glad you told me they contribute to - because now I will join

[ In Reply To ..]
This was not a political thing, at first. I really hate it to ask about 1 thing and have it turned around. I know a person who not for Obamacare would be in really bad straits. Lost her job, insurance, medical bills and she was more than grateful to be able to have someone insure her. I see where people here just cannot keep to the facts, that is do you like AARP, not do you like a particular party just to answer basic question. Thanks but now have made up my mind and that will be to join, just because I know they support Obama and his issues. I never knew this before, no idea.
AARP has become a political machine. It's relevant - to the conversation. It's
[ In Reply To ..]
got it tentacles into everything. AARP is a sophisticated lobbying machine with billions of dollars.

If you want to join, have at it. Better a person knows ahead of time that after the fact.
I find it shocking that someone doesn't know this by now. - They operate as a nonprofit, but
[ In Reply To ..]
they are one of the most powerful lobbying groups in Washington with billions. AMAC's insurance plans and companies are vastly superior to United Healthcare (AARP). Plus their insurance folks are the best I’ve ever encountered. When Obamacare caused the cancellation of my HMO ( under Medicare), AMAC helped both me and my husband obtain new, much better policies at very competitive rates. The insurance I got was so good that my husband cancelled his AARP United Healthcare policy and took out one identical to mine with AMAC (Aetna). AMAC walks the talk.
OP- Not everyone cares about politics to know - who belongs here, who belongs there
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not run my life on deciding, lets see this store is run by republicans, lets not do business there, this store is run by democrats, surely wouldn't do business there. Some people here are just fed up with all the hoopla and bickering back and forth. I would much rather watch Animal Planet than read about which person is leading in the polls for president. Some of us could care less and I am one of those people. I don't need more insurance, have great coverage, I don't need car insurance, that is covered, have the money to go to the movies when I want, just did not pay attention to the fact their prices had gone up so much. I have for years gotten mail regarding AARP, never looked into it, had no idea what it offered and so asked. This was like stirring up a hornet's nest when I was only asking about what they offered. I don't care about their political leanings nor yours nor my family's, no ones.
I respect that, but someone else might find this - info useful.

In your previous post you said you would join because of - Obamacare, so I can see how
[ In Reply To ..]
someone would construe that as you DO care about the political aspect.

In any case, good luck whatever your decision.

Tongue in cheek remark from me as I did not - appreciate politics being thrown in
[ In Reply To ..]
when I simply asked about AARP and what it had to offer, not what it brought out from the bleachers. I have health insurance, PPO, that is a perk of my husband's work that he nor I do not have to pay 1 red cent for and quite happy with that. See, you are not as wise as you think you are and still do not care about their views or yours either.
I understand that, but AARP has made itself political - and that's important to some people.
[ In Reply To ..]
Anyway, good luck whatever you decide to do.

She lost her job, lost her insurance. She told me about her being able to get Obamacare. She is not political at all but she was thankful to have something to fall back on in time of her needs.
We dumped health insurance on Jan 1, 2014. I cannot - emphasize enough how much it
[ In Reply To ..]
simplified our lives. Seriously. People have no idea how big the discounts are when you pay for your own health care. I mean 50-75% and more.

If you're wondering about the penalty, they can only get it if you are getting a refund. We all must do what we have to do to survive.

I was working in house at a local hospital and did part-time work for an orthopedic group. My son broke his shoulder. I did not have anything to fall back on. Two surgeries for him, orthopedic, hospital costs. The surgeon in the ortho group I worked for did as a freebie for me, the hospital let me make payments taken from my check on a biweekly basis. If it had not been for those 2 do not know what I would have done. That taught me a life lesson. From then on I knew I had to carry health insurance and never without it again.
We recently paid cash to one of our Catholic hospitals - for a procedure, $4200.
[ In Reply To ..]
If it had been an insurance billing, it would have been 10 times that. This included preop, operating room, and postop care. he anesthesiologist was also included in the $4200. I thought it was a decent price. Of course we had to pay the doctor separately, it was about the same cost.

If you can afford cash, it's so much cheaper. You can negotiate the price. I'm seeing something called a concierge pop up, doctors only accepting cash.
I just got through paying for ER vet bill - so cash it had to be
[ In Reply To ..]
but most people cannot afford cash up front for things like surgery, OP room, anesthesia, just costs too much now. One ER vet visit cost me (and my daughter combined) over $2,000.

I have decided I'm tired of being in the part that busts my hind end trying to pay my bills and taxes, including over 1000 a month for health insurance for two people (which went up over 300.00 because of Obamacare already).    So, I am going to quit 2 of my 3 jobs, and go get some food stamps and perhaps apply for disability.  I truly believe in helping my fellow citizens that NEED help out - but come on, it can't be the few supporting the many and that is where w ...
