Do you think Penn State football program should get the death penalty?

Posted: Jul 16, 2012

Haven't made up my mind.  I see both sides of the argument.  First of all, so very many people will suffer who had nothing to do with the child sex abuse cover-up.  In reading arguments for and against, perhaps it is true that the persons responsible and or involved in any way should be fired, jailed, labeled as sex offenders, and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP, and the football program should remain intact, as it is not fair to punish the football players, and the whole university, or is it?  Not sure.

I think they should get the death penalty - my thoughts

Other universities have gotten the death penalty for far less. Most are for giving money to football players.

I put myself in the shoes of one of those young boys who was raped, or that of his parents. Just visualize it.

For a program and a university founded on ethics and doing the right thing, a Catholic University, their hypocrasy is just unforgivable.

The football players are not being punished. If they are good enough to play for Penn State, they will more than likely be accepted to a more reputable institution, and they should WANT that. I'm sorry, but if I was enrolled in that school under any circumstances, even under a full scholarship, as an athlete or scholar, I would withdraw.

It is fair to punish the whole university. They deserve to be punished and destroyed. It's only money for them... and their reputation, which is a joke because they condoned the raping of young boys for a very long time to protect their multimilllion dollar football program.

Lives have been all but destroyed. I think the same should be dished out to Penn State in its entirety.

I tend to agree. - anon

I too was kind of on the fence about this question, wondering if it was fair to "punish" the football players in this whole scenario, but after reading your My Thoughts post, I have landed on your side of the fence. It is true that the football players can find their sporting activities elsewhere. They are not set in stone at just this one "school." This school, just like the catholic priest fiasco, allowing the molestation of young boys, should be swept off the map, just like "they" tried to sweep the whole thing under a rug, at the expense of those poor young children who could not defend themselves against these monsters! DEATH PENALTY! For sure!

I agree with most of your post...sm - VTMT

I want to correct one thing though. Penn State is not a Catholic University. I don't think the whole university should be shut down but do thing the athletics department should be completely shut down. The NCAA may effectively take care of that if they issue sanctions.

It really makes my blood boil when I think that these men made it possible for Sandusky to repeatedly anally rape very young boys for AT LEAST 14 years! I think that was his addiction for way more than 14 years. Many flags were raised and nothing happened until now. I think that everyone involved in a coverup of his pedophelia, not just Penn State, should be held accountable, including his charity and most especially his WIFE.

Lastly, yes, take the statue down!

Fined, sanctioned, and put ona LONG probation. - L&L

Lots of footbal programs are being run w/o pedophiles. Also, you are quite right about innocent people being penalized. They would probably have to double tuition w/o the money from football. My ex is an administrator at the large prominent football university. Been there, know that.

A question was asked and she answered in a way that did not seem offensive in any way.

"Wipe that ugly sneer off your own face and you might be fit to offer a washcloth to your neighbor."

Matthew 7:1-5

As far as the Penn State thing goes, I just don't know. I can't see punishing people who were not there and had nothing to do with it. I don't know how that is going to compensate the victims of this in any way. Joe Paterno is dead, Sandusky is going away for a long, long time. How taking football away from the institution is going to help, I don't know. With that said, if it were my kid who was molested, I would burn the whole place down, but then again, I don't hand my kids over to strangers....so I don't know. I hope that these victims can get some peace in their lives and move forward.
But she gave you - the opportunity

I am not rightous or superior, judgemental or sanctimonious or religious for that matter, but I do try to treat others as I would like to be treated and at times I need to be reminded of the sneer on my own face. I was just pointing out the fact that the poster was rude, as we all are some times. You should read that bible verse. I did not see it as a matter of religion, but rather a matter of humanity.

IMO, the program should not be penalized BUT - sm - Zorro

anyone associated with it that had any part of the cover-up or who looked the other way should be fired and banned from the sport for X number of years (1,5, 10, life). It is inexcusable that nothing was done by PS. I have not read the report, just a few articles so I may be totally off here, my understanding is several officials knew what was going after it was reported and chose to do nothing, Joe P. included, all to "escape scandal"...hello, got plenty of that now and it is a lot worse now then it would have been then had you all put on your big boy pants and faced the music then. Guess they all figured if they closed their eyes it would just go away in a puff of smoke. Total morons.

Follow the chain of evidence and fire those accountable that had the power and knowledge to stop this. I don't know if they can be charged with a crime or not (aiding and abetting, that would be a good one), if there was a charge for total stupidity that would certainly apply in this case.

Hmmmm.....tricky. - IMHO

Perhaps in everyone's cry for the world of Penn State to crumble to the ground, there would be innocent people punished who do not deserve the affect from a death penalty.

Look at it this way. Pretend a professor of the business department and his wife were at PSU, and she goes to the restroom. While there, she is stabbed to death or raped. Other professors in this department, and perhaps a janitor, saw who could have been the perp and lied about it. Maybe it was a member of the business department. When it is discovered who the perp is, and they knew it, should the whole university or business department be punished? Perhaps that is not a very good example at all, but you get my meaning.

If PSU gets the death penality, it affects many people, not just the football players. Many people will lose their jobs. The school will suffer a great financial loss, and this will in turn affect the entire student body. I don't know how the place will survive anyway, or why anyone would want to enroll there in the future.

I can't make up my mind about the football death penality, but I do believe that every single person involved in each and every single one of these sex abuse cases, just like the Catholic Church who covered up the same scenario, whether it is the janitor, an assistant coach, any professors if applicable, the vice president, the president, counselors, and especially the chief of police (who is reported to have known) should lose their jobs. If anyone kept their mouth shut, they should be fired and prosecuted. I hope the president of PSU is jailed for child neglect, endangerment, conspiracy, obstructing justice, and whatever else they can lay on him, and he shares a cell with Sandusky for many years to come.

I am horrified at all we are hearing about Jerry Sandusky and what he is accused of doing. It is hard to understand that not more was done. PSU Did Not Get The Death Penalty BecauseJul 23, 2012
The NCAA says the Death Penality does not fit in this case.  The FOOTBALL TEAM would have to be guilty of crimes committed while on probation.  The FOOTBALL TEAM did not commit any crimes.  Current and incoming football players are released to play at other universities if they so desire, or are now "free agents."  I so agree with this.  It is a shame that they will feel the affects of the punishment to the university, but there is no getting around it.  It had to b ...

Why Are Supporters Of The Death PenaltyOct 01, 2015
I know the system can be flawed. I know sometimes the wrong person is convicted of stealing, or whatever. But, when the penalty has escalated to the death penalty, any doubt, any evidence, no matter when it is found, nothing matters, it all should be considered and we should never put a person to death if there is any doubt at all. So many seem so eager and interested in the process that the actual cases do not really matter. This is such a vengeful society, at least when it suits. ...

US Execution Capital Reconsiders The Death PenaltyDec 06, 2010
New York - On Monday, Dec. 6, a district court in Texas will be asked – for the first time in that U.S. state's history – to decide whether the death penalty is unconstitutional based on the "disproportionately high risk of wrongful convictions" in Texas. John Edward Green, Jr., the defendant in Texas v. Green, is charged in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old Houston woman during a 2008 robbery. He has not yet been convicted, but prosecutors say they would seek the ...
