The NCAA says the Death Penality does not fit in this case. The FOOTBALL TEAM would have to be guilty of crimes committed while on probation. The FOOTBALL TEAM did not commit any crimes. Current and incoming football players are released to play at other universities if they so desire, or are now "free agents." I so agree with this. It is a shame that they will feel the affects of the punishment to the university, but there is no getting around it. It had to be done and it had to be as severe as possible. The death penalty was not appropriate to these young athletes, other employees, and actually to the revenue generated to the whole town.
However, the punishments, fines, and penalities handed down are the closest thing you can get to the death penalty. The school's football program is basically ruined. Paterno's statue has been removed, and he has been stripped of 111 wins from his record. PSU has been fined $60 million to be paid to programs for the prevention of child abuse (NOT BY PSU). More fines and penalties are likely to follow. This essentially ruins the people involved, the football program for the most part, and reverses Paterno's winning record. I wish the money had been awarded to the victims, but I guess that is another law suit. I also hope that all who covered this up from the counselor, other football authorities, and the police chief will be prosecuted as well. I hope the former university president shares a jail cell with Sandusky!!!
