College books

Posted: Jan 10, 2012

I signed both of my boys up today for classes at the community college.  Thank goodness I have a Pell grant for both of them that pays most of their tuition because books for 6 classes cost $800!!!!!  Yes I said 800, that was not a typo for only six classes.  Luckily, the 7th class my son already had the book from his previous calc class and they are using the same book this semester.  I could not believe that they told me that one of the books I could buy a new one for $157 or rent the book for $105 but they had no used books for that particular book.  I can not believe that they were actually renting the book and for almost as much as it costs to buy new!  What a racquet!!  I am checking out to see if I can get the books on Amazon since I have about a week and a half before classes start.  Luckily my father is helping me out with the boys college; otherwise, they would not be able to take all those classes, as I could never afford the books!  That is just ridiculous.

Textbooks are going to be a thing of the past - sm

I wonder how many textbooks are going to be obsolete soon as there will probably be a download for all text books soon.

Campus bookstore books are a Total Rip off!! Best recommendation is to google for other text book sites--amazon and bn both offer text books and there are places where you can rent them for the semester. My husband is in school right now, shopped around for his books (ended up going through two different sites) and paid a Quarter of what the bookstore would have charged him!

I wish that would happen now! With my luck, it won't happen until - they are done with college.

My daughter rents her college books from Chegg. It is very inexpensive, usually only about $25 or so for what are usually brand new books. Shipping is free in both directions. Check them out! We love using Chegg.

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely check it out. - sm

How long have you been using them and have you ever had any problems with them at all? Thanks again.

We have been using them for a couple of years. They have 21-day, no questions asked money back guarantee and we have never had any problems with them. You can also check out bigwords.com. A great place to sell and buy books. I am sick to death of the exorbitant rates charged at college bookstores! Best to you!
You can also sell them back - mom of grad and 1 still in

I may be outdated here, but my daughter who started college in 2006, would always sell back her books to the school bookstore for sometimes as much as 75%.

My son, on the other hand, still in school, tries to ebay or amazon. He weighs the best bet (he's an accounting major), whether to bookstore/sell back or buy online.

Selling back could be lucrative, but unfortunately some editions are updated every 2 years or even every year (a scam for sure), so the bookstore will not buy them back because the prof. will require the newest edition, but sometimes not, but anyhow, that impacts whether the store will buy back the book. In most cases the student knows whether or not they will be able to sell back the book when they buy it. And used books (bought in the college bookstore) can also be sold back, usually at a better buy/sell than new books, not to mention used books are much cheaper to begin with.

Now, if the prof. requests newest edition and you can get older edition for significantly cheaper on ebay, amazon, etc., if student talks to prof, he/she may okay the older edition, but sometmies not.

Hopefully, as other poster said, books will be obsolete for college text. It really is a scam the way the whole thing is. They change a few lines and issue a new edition. My daughter almost took a job selling college books and wasn't impressed with their ethics, but it is a business!

She had a prof who constructed a library of textbooks from samples from salespeople and let the students choose their textbook rather than specifying and insisting they buy a book. How novel!! It was a history class and the different perspectives from different texts definitely enhanced the learning process.

Well, good luck with all the fun of having college offspring!

Just had my 4th kid graduate this December so I feel your pain. If you type the ISBN number in Google, lots of options will come up. I turn around and sell last semester's textbooks on half.com and amazon. Sometimes we even make money on the transactions. NC has several state colleges that charge a flat rental fee for books. You might look for that option where you live when they get out of the community college.

Paying For CollegeFeb 06, 2016
First, it would be means-tested.  No assistance would be offered to families who don't need it, and for those eligible for assistance, the amount would be based on the level of need.   Families at the poverty level would receive the greatest assistance and the amount would decrease as the family income level increases until hitting the "wealthy"cutoff of no assistance. Second, assistance would be based on the residual need AFTER taking into account scholarships or grants, if ...

Daughter Starting CollegeApr 27, 2013
Hello all - my daughter will be starting college in the fall and we are in the process of trying to find financial aid. Does anyone have info on how to get grants? Is there usually a family income max that would allow/disallow anyone from getting a grant?
