Free College Tuition-- Bernie Sanders

Posted: May 22, 2015

given what has happened in our profession, I have gone from confident that I could at least easily help my children go to college, to wondering if I can get them through high school with all of the things they need.

Bernie Sanders proposal has come as a complete God send.  I hope some of you will listen to this and understand that things are changing in the U.S. and we need to change some of these systems with them.

I found it fascinating that there was once a fight to make public school K-12 available to everyone, as it was not.  Also, found it very interesting to listen to the money stream being sucked up by educational loans and debt that could be used to buy products, thus creating more jobs.

No doubt there is a a certain group of people who can still afford college.  But that is just more promotion of the rich getting richer.  It also ignores quality minds that need to obtain education in order to build our workforce and innovation.

This idea will take a lot of work, but it could completely change the course of America's future for the better, producing a more educated and capable workforce.

Have been following Bernie for two years - like I said before, he is one of the few politicians who really cares about the average American worker - am still waiting for a response from him on the letter I sent him about Washington addressing the entire medical transcription industry ...

Wrote to him many years ago - burtthecat

[ In Reply To ..]
about the MT industry. Never got a response. I guess it's not a big enough issue for him to address.

They have bigger fish to fry than the po-dunk - transcription industry.

[ In Reply To ..]
Most people don't even know MT exists. and most MTs are too scared to get out there and start picketing corporate headquarters.

Don't hold your breath on that letter. - Truthhurts

All politicians care about the people when they're running for office. When they're in office, you get a canned response if at all.

I wrote to just about everyone I could think of about the MT industry back when wages were falling. I wrote to 3 presidents, all my Reps whether GOP or Dem, also other so-called "for the people" Reps/Senators in other states, plus any congressional committees involved in trade/finance/jobs. Didn't receive a single reply from anyone except my state Reps who "would look into it."

I even wrote to the Labor Dept. telling them their stats on hourly wages for MTs was grossly overstated. They said they would "look into it" too, but nothing came of it.

I wrote MORE than one time, too, but after the 3rd time, got no response at all.

It all has to do with trade which used to be NAFTA, that was greatly expanded under Clinton. The Labor Dept. said they would look into it, but nothing came of that either.

Might as well give it up. The MT business is dead in the water with Obamacare and his EMR requirements now. Go for a different occupation. As usual, the citizens get the shaft.

You can keep posting that NAFTA was "expanded" under Clinton. - It still doesn't make it true.

[ In Reply To ..]
NAFTA was not "greatly expanded" under Clinton. It was signed into law for the first time.

This means that colleges can raise their prices - since taxpayers will be paying for it

[ In Reply To ..]
so they can charge whatever they want, really they already do that.

So maybe there is a cap as to how much - per year--those that raise

[ In Reply To ..]
their prices don't get as many students, or maybe they get the rich kids. But, they sure as heck don't get federal funds anymore. That might change their tune.

Bernie likes to use Germany, Denmark and Sweden as an - example, but the only reason

European countries can afford college for all is because they have a much higher overall tax rate, they spend almost nothing on military or any kind of R&D. There’s a reason companies with operations in the US tend to discover the most new drugs or whatnot. There’s a reason no one asks Britain to send their Navy to help after a devastating hurricane.

European countries like Germany do a much better job of vocational schooling, which is what the majority of the populace needs for a job.

These are the people who are able to obtain US work visas because they are better educated and can fill the increasing void caused by an overall indifference and undervaluing of higher education in this country.

This is excerpt from one of many articles explaining some of the differences. Perhaps not so much of an all expense paid vacation/tour as the American college experience has become, with the all important football team and basketball tournaments. Just think of all the garbage you pay for at the college level, whether your student wishes to participate or has interest or not. What happened to the education? Here, as in most parts of U.S. the important part was pushed aside for the cushy, big screen TV, dorm experience, team spirit garbage.

First of all, the concept of “campus life” differs widely between our two countries. German universities consist almost entirely of classroom buildings and libraries—no palatial gyms with rock walls and water parks; no team sports facilities (unless you count the fencing fraternities I will never understand); no billion-dollar student unions with flat-screen TVs and first-run movie theaters. And forget the resort-style dormitories. What few dorms exist are minimalistic, to put it kindly—but that’s largely irrelevant anyway, as many German students still live at home with their parents, or in independent apartment shares, none of which foster the kind of insular, summer-camp-esque experience Americans associate closely with college life (and its hefty price tag). It’s quite common for German students simply to commute in for class, then leave.

Speaking of class: Academic life is quite a bit different over there. German students are typically accepted into particular majors—none of this “expanding your horizons” and declaring halfway through your junior year. You apply to college in Germany to study law, medicine, literature, engineering, etc.—and you take that program’s requirements, the end.
They may have a higher tax rate, but they also - have much higher wages,

better jobs because of that education, and close to zero unemployment. I have Scandinavian relatives, and most of them - although considered "middle class" in their country - would be considered wealthy in the U.S. Most people there have more than one home (one regular, one vacation cottage). They live healthy lifestyles, augmented by free healthcare. Compared to the quality of life in Scandinavia, the U.S. is one great big trailer-park.

If I had the opportunity to make more money, have good health care and a better education, I'd be more than happy to fund it for others with my taxes as well.

What I'm NOT so happy about is even one penny of my hard-earned taxes going to fund middle east wars that we'll never win, or subsidizing an oil industry that is contaminating just about everything we eat, breathe or touch. I'm tired of my taxes bailing out a crooked Wall Street, crooked banks, crooked politics, and crooked corporations.

Colleges have been raising their prices in - multiples for years

[ In Reply To ..]
Just like everything else in this country (and around the world where colleges are for profit) they find ways to increase tuition so they can pay big fat CEO salaries and, most importantly, coaching fees and build stadiums.

You do realize some college coaches make millions of dollars a year and most have the highest paid jobs in their states?

I have to think if the $ were just for tuition that would have to remain static and accounted for, and if they want to build sports stadiums and pay CEO salaries they can do that out of the donors' pockets, like say the Koch Brothers who are very involved in Florida State University (and many other universities) to the extent they want to be able to approve hiring and also any scholarly studies coming out of the institution must represent their ideology.

This relates to public colleges and universities. There will...sm - vtmt

still be the private universities for those that choose to pay to go there. Also, this is a tuition-free proposal. Ancillary expenses such as fees, books, dorms, meals, etc....anything other than actual classroom teaching, will still incur a charge.

We need this to keep from falling further behind the rest of the modern civilized world who realize the value of an educated population.

The Unraveling Of Jane Sanders' Burlington CollegeJul 22, 2017
Sanders, wife of 2016 presidential candidate and Vermont senator Bernie Sanders, described herself when she was hired in 2004 as a "turnaround president." She orchestrated the college's move from a small, cramped campus to an expansive lakefront property in 2010. The sprawling green would give students space to relax. The small private college could have built dorms, townhouses and single homes on the 32-acre property. Some property could have been leased, perhaps to a restaurant or caf ...

Income and wealth inequality: In the United States today we have the most unequal wealth and income distribution of any major country on earth -- worse than at any time since the 1920s.
