anyone successful going back to college, need some financial advice

Posted: Feb 4, 2012

I am 39 years old wanting to go back to college to become an RN.  I will start out for the first 2 years at the community college to finish those basic courses I didn't do 20 years ago.  When I went to school back right after high school my parents dealt with the financial aid.  Now that I am looking at it there are so many resources apparently out there to help find grant money and scholarships, but I'm getting nowhere, and more confused.

FIRST QUESTION:  I read that filling out the FAFSA is the first step (which I have begun the application...awaiting tax return info from our accountant).  My husband and I together make about $48,000, which to some people is a lot of money, to others is not.  The point I am trying to make is, is that income level going to deter a Pell Grant or any other type of scholarships based on need?  I have no plans to quit MTing PT at night which I have been doing already (but that's really not that much money when it's all put into perspective) because I have to have that little bit of money to pay bills also, we can't make it comfortably on only his salary.

SECOND QUESTION:  Anyone have any sites or organizations that reliably give scholarship money to adults wanting to go back to college and any advice on applying for those scholarships?

Thank you so much for your helpful information.

Just the information that you make $48,000 does not help. The reason why I say that is that your $48,000 means different things at different levels. Do you have dependents? If you have 5 kids and only make $48,000 then you'll come close to getting a free ride with financial aid. If $48,000 is with no dependents, just you and your husband, then yes it's too much money and you will not get a pell grant or federal student loans. If that is the case, you will need to try to get scholarships and you will also need to get private student loans through area banks. Generally, the community colleges will have a brochure as to where you can go to try to get scholarships and sometimes even the colleges themselves have them. Also, depending on where you live, I would check your local unemployment office/Workforce center to see if they have any help available. I just got my AA degree being paid for by the displaced workers program (after I was laid off from my job), but had gotten funding through there many years ago just as someone who wanted to go to school. I don't know if that is a state or federal program though, but it definitely doesn't hurt to check it out.

I've been a MT for about 30 yrs. I had to go on disability due to back pain, then had 2 back surgeries. Thank God the neurosurgeon did a GREAT job and I'm ready to go back to work, but I HAVE to get up at least once an hour to walk for like 15 minutes. What do I tell (if I do) a prospective employer that I have this problem? How do I do this? I've got to get back to work now! Thanks! ...

If Romney Had Embraced His Successful Ma Healthcare Bill..smJun 07, 2012
rather than run away from it, I think he would have been a shoo-in for president.  Instead of looking like a flip-flopper he could have taken credit for Obamacare since it is so similar to his plan in Ma.  He is so concerned about courting the right wing of the party that he is like a chameleon, selling his soul to the highest bidder.  In the end, he truly doesn't have the heart to be a really right-wing politician and really is a moderate republican, though a very wealthy on ...

Financial ReformDec 11, 2009
Thoughts on the bill passed in the House today? Too little, too much? I think it's a good step but there are no guarantees Big Business won't find loopholes. In fact, I'm quite sure they will try. In the meantime, however, it sends a good message that we will be watching.  I'm also sure the senate will take months with this. Will that lead to a watered-down version? I guess it depends on how hard the constituents press their elected officials.  NJ ...

Financial Problems - Like So ManyMar 13, 2010

Financial ReformJul 18, 2010
I have been reading articles on what is, and what is not, included in this new law. Not a single article agrees this is real reform.  It still gives Wall Street (SEC) and big banks the freedom to do what they want. This is not good. It's what I've been saying all along.  The idea of financial reform was supposed to stop the abuse, but it may give the above more free rein in what they do.  I'm posting one article from MSNBC. Please be sure to read the ful ...

Senate Passed Financial Reform Bill About An Hour AgoJul 15, 2010
I must go look at it now that it passed. There were stipulations that didn't rein in Wall Street but one article I read stated it does that.   "The Senate passed the financial overhaul package in a final vote Thursday, ending more than a year of wrangling over the shape of the landmark legislation. The focus now shifts to the monumental task of implementing the new regulations over coming weeks and months. The 60 to 39 decision came just before 3 p.m, only a few hours after Democr ...
