Just wondering who actually believes these politician's promises? Nothing is free. Somebody has to pay. Were their supporters naïve?

No nothing is free, but naïve is not knowing how appropriations work in this country. You get what you voted for, and for 40 years we have voted to fund corporate America and her CEOs, while the rest of the first world focused more on happy people with things like vacations, healthcare and education. in 1960. Tuition was free in those days at all NY city colleges so it is possible. No taxpayer money is better spent than on education.

This has nothing to do with Walmart or Carrier. It has to do with claims of a "FREE" education promised by Hillary and Bernie and poster's claim she had a "free" education. Please stay on topic.

But I will explain the reasoning behind it.

The top 1% sends jobs overseas. Middle class is forced to take jobs at McDonald's and others that pay minimum wage. Many have to work 2 or 3 jobs to keep food on their table or resort to welfare because there are no jobs that don't pay minimum wage unless you go to school. The right keeps telling people to get off welfare and get a job while they send jobs overseas and use automation instead of people. They are then told they should go to school to learn jobs and keep up with progress. They can't afford to pay for school because they don't even make enough to keep food on their tables.

A great solution is to pay for these people to go to school so they can become productive in our country. The right says you can't pay for their school with my tax dollars and we don't want to raise minimum wage so you can feed your family, we want to give corporations big tax breaks so they can earn more money to put in their pockets and buy more automation so they can put more people out of work.

Many countries pay for education for their citizens so they can be useful in the country. They also provide healthcare for everybody. The right says you can't do that you communists, socialists, Marxists, whatever the word of the day is. We're going to take away your insurance because we're not paying for your insurance.

I don't think the left is naive at all. I'm not crying over Hillary, I'm crying over the fact that our country is falling apart and Trump certainly is not going to fix it unless he starts doing things that don't hurt the middle class, which I have not seen any indication that he will not hurt the middle class.

through TRA because my job was offshored. But, I worked all my life and paid taxes so I paid also. The big companies get big tax breaks and use the money to pad their pockets and send jobs overseas (including Donald Duck) instead of creating jobs here so nothing wrong with government paying for college. I know Donald Duck has created jobs here but he says he's bringing all the jobs back, bet it doesn't include the ones he sent overseas. He'll give all the corporations YUGE tax breaks, including himself, pad theirs and his pockets, but won't bring the jobs back.

Someone, somewhere, is paying the tuition even if the student is not. There is no school Santa Claus.

You live in the past. In 1960's Princeton's annual cost including - tuition, room & board was $2260.

Today it is over $49,000 per year!

You can check any other college you like (if it existed in 1960) and you'll find the same kinds of increases. I looked without finding anything, but if Princeton was $2200, City College was probably cost taxpayers about $600 or $700 per student per year, but it isn't that way now.

These increases came about because people could get federal loans, etc., and that killed the natural market forces that would have reigned in these costs.

The colleges saw that "gimme-gimme" money (who cared about paying back?) and they started raising their tuition etc like crazy.

...and these staggering increases are in no way accounted for by natural economic forces such as "inflation", so don't bother to mention that.

The same thing would happen now...but in spades...with even more free college money available.

No, my dear. "Free college" in 2016 ain't in any way the same thing it was in your day, not by a long shot. The article linked below might be enlightening.

I would, however, favor some sort of stipend for students who are enrolled in CERTAIN PRACTICAL AND NECESSARY DEGREE PROGRAMS - engineering, science, etc. I'm sure not going to pay for some goofball to contemplate his navel while majoring in the History of Marvel Comics.

Oh - and by the way: To qualify for a stipend, the student would have to ATTEND CLASS, TAKE ALL EXAMS, COMPLETE ALL ASSIGNMENTS, MAINTAIN A 2.5 GRADE POINT AVERAGE, AND COULD NOT HAVE ANY ARRESTS FOR PARTICIPATION IN FOOLISH DEMONSTRATIONS AND RIOTS.

If I pay for someone to go to college THAT IS BY GOD WHAT THEY'RE GOING TO DO. I don't pay for immature clowns to play around on my dime.

Actually its worse than frozen. Because of Obama's failures... unemployment is on the rise now at 28-35%. More people are getting laid off (or redeployed as my hospital calls it). More people are losing their homes, going hungry, filing bankruptcy. People over 45 are not getting employed. Seems like every day we hear of yet another store going out of business. Last it was Macy's and other retailers, now it's Sears. Drive down any street in the country and you see more and more stores closing.

People are not shopping because we have no money to buy things we need.

Don't know how much more into a depression we need to go. We were never "on our way" under Obama. The only people "on their way" under Obama was the 1%.

Taken back? Before Obama and Clinton messes...I sure hop so. The country needs to be prosperous again.

Make the country great again Mr. Trump. And thank you God for having an America who truly understands we need a great person in office with experience.
