Starting Community College to be an RN/Venting

I was let go from IMedX for not flexing due to low work on day shift. Sorry, but I can't flex late night/overnight hours due to having a 4-year-old. She comes first. Transtech was understanding but this IMedX bunch is ruthless. I have a new IC part-time job now with plenty of work during the day, M-F w/rotating weekends, where I'm treated fairly and the pay is good. This is to pay bills and help with tuition. I just registered for my first class since getting my first associate degree in 2000, which turned out to be just good for getting secretarial work. At the time being trained on the job at a hospital in 2001 was a blessing, and I thought I would never have trouble getting work and having good pay again. Thanks to India and voice rec, with most hospitals now outsourcing to MTSOs, most hospitals don't hire transcriptionists anymore, and most MTSOs send some or most of their work overseas. The work available is mostly VR at falling rates everywhere.

Seeing the writing on the walls and postings for RN jobs everywhere, I've decided my MT work in the past will at least help me with the entrance exam. I have an NICU RN aunt, a retired RN grandmother and a nurse practitioner aunt who teaches nursing, working on a DNP degree. College I'm going to only offers an associate's degree RN program, but I figured working as an RN while working on a BSN and beyond would be great.

I just feel overwhelming sadness that the job I love doing is slowly disappearing though

I became an RN about 10 years ago, but I have never not done MT work, at least part time. I loved my job as an RN but left when my 3rd daughter was born. I was about to go back but then my son was born, so I kept staying home with MT work. I was actually going to apply for an RN position here in town to begin working in the fall, but now I'm having another baby, so I can't go back just yet. My family has had lots of nurses and other health care providers (dad is retired MD, mom is retired nurse, many of my aunts were/are nurses). I'm thankful I have that to turn to and will likely get back to floor nursing in mental health after the next baby is born and maternity leave is over.

I dont know how you think you will ever go back to work - out of house when you keep having kids. nm

This isn't China. My aunt (the ARNP/doctoral student) has 5 kids. Her youngest is 7, but she's worked since before her first (now 18) was born. She had long days and short nights, but always managed to raise, care for and nurture an awesome family and still help my uncle provide as an RN.

Personally, I'm happy for this RN. It took me 3-1/2 years to get pregnant with my daughter, just to have severe preeclampsia and deliver at 28 weeks, with 3 months in the NICU.

alone. It took me awhile to get pregnant as well and then I developed preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome. My son was born at 32 weeks by emergency C-section. Seven weeks in the NICU.

He had lots of respiratory issues, sensory integration problems, low muscle tone, severe reflux, etc., etc. It's a tough journey for sure. Because of that experience, he remained an only child.

but mine will be in psychiatry, not medicine. My kids are teenagers. I find I learn easier now. I'm not sure if it's because I appreciate the education more or because I have less distractions than I did when I was younger.

Start rant: I am thankful to have a job, BUT why can't doctors have there stuff in order before they start dictating????
