pricing old books

Posted: Jul 4, 2011

Does anyone know how to go about pricing old books and selling them for their maxium value?  I have some old books and want to find out what they are worth and possibly sell them, but want to maximize the amount of money I get for them.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.  TIA

I would think that the books are worth a lot more now than they were in 1915 to 1930s. I do not know if they are rare books, ect. I did find one 'Rageddy Andy Stories' selling online for $610.00, but do not know how to go about selling them or pricing them. That is what I am looking for. Thanks.

Look in the phone book for a book dealer or antique shop near you. Some antique shops will buy your books. Some have a booth rented by a book dealer and can give you their number.

There are many book fairs, antique shows, antique street fairs, or flea markets with quality merchandise. I've seen booksellers there. Look online with your city and state to find them.

Most book dealers will not buy from you through the mail. They have to see and inspect the books themselves. They check for condition and rarity. Some books have been published in many editions and are not worth much in price. Other books are very rare and sell for a lot.

Check Abebooks online and get numbers for book dealers in your area. Abebooks has a place for people to sell books. Click on that and they give you information. Abebooks also has a Book Fair Directory for book fairs in the United States.

Check to see if your books are being sold on Abebooks and Amazon. Look at the prices and whether they have many copies or just one. Remember that the selling price is what the bookseller is wanting, not what that book has sold for. Many online book dealers ask hundreds of dollars for a book that other dealers sell for a few dollars.

The Antiquarian Booksellers' Association of American has a website where you can get information about rare books and their membership list of booksellers. You might find one in your area. They sponsor book fairs throughout the country and might be willing to inspect your books there.

If a dealer doesn't want your books, you could sell them on ebay or other online auctions. I've never done that myself, but maybe someone else can advise you on that. Some towns have ebay stores and they might be able to help.

Or do a good deed and donate them to Friends of the Libary. Many libraries sell old books and use the proceeds to buy new ones.

Good luck.

thanks for all the info... - cindy

honestly, I probably would not be selling them if I did not need the money. My husband lost his job and I am the sole provider for our family right now, so looking for anything to supplement my income. My boys are worried and I just found out that they have not been eating as much lately because they are scared of running out of food, so I want to see if there is anything I can do to bring in extra money to help reassure them. Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

Garage Sale Pricing QuestionMay 04, 2017
Looking at holding a garage sale, but have no idea what to price our stuff for.  Does anyone have suggestions.  All of our stuff is old.  Things like old wood tables (from the 1960s/70s), old furniture, really old TVs that still work, but are about 15 years old, so part of the picture is fading away, books, dishes, clothes, etc.  An oak bed (queen) about 15 years old, dressers from the 50s and 60s, etc.  How do you decide how to price things? Any help is appreciated. & ...

College Books Jan 10, 2012
I signed both of my boys up today for classes at the community college.  Thank goodness I have a Pell grant for both of them that pays most of their tuition because books for 6 classes cost $800!!!!!  Yes I said 800, that was not a typo for only six classes.  Luckily, the 7th class my son already had the book from his previous calc class and they are using the same book this semester.  I could not believe that they told me that one of the books I could buy a new one for $157 ...

Is anyone into the Twighlight movies/books.  I've been looking on the Internet but I'm confused as to how many series there are and what is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.  Have you read the books or seen the movies and which do you prefer.  I'm 50 years old, do you think this is something someone my age would enjoy or is it more a teenager thing.  I do like True Blood, Interview of a Vampire and movies like that.  Just unsure if its a young adult thing or any gend ...
