Cat coming to my house, kind of skittish but

Posted: Oct 23, 2014

A cat has been coming to my home and I have fed it morning and evening for about 2 weeks or so. I have put vitamin C in the food as the cat has some discharge and what looks to be sort of an eye infection. I have not had many interactions with what seems to be an almost feral cat. I thought about putting food in a carrier, let him get comfortable for a few days and then closing and taking him to the vet. I have just in the last 2 days been able to pat him on the head and he not react. Anyone have any dealings with ferals- I don't want him to be so scared he would never return again. ;

Keep doing what you're doing and be patient - Rescued some ferals in the past

Actually, the fact that he will let you pet him is fantastic. The best plan is just what you have in mind, get him to the vet for evaluation. Cats need people like you!

More than likely he'll get ointment from a vet. - DZ

Do you really think you'd be able to put it in for him? I doubt it. He'd probably run away. I hate to say it but it's probably better if you just let it as is. Hopefully it will clear up on its own. Unless you are prepared to take him in your home.

thank you for caring - NK

I hope that you will be able to trap him and get him to the vet for vetting and neutering if it hasn't already been done.

I assume you're feeding wet food since you're putting vitamin C in it. You might try some L-lysine in either wet food or his water to boost his immune system.

I just took over feeding 6-10 of them at a foreclosed house. The only nicest one I finally got and took to the vet. He had red around his eyelids and eye infection. Got him a shot of Penicillin and eyedrops. I just brought a cat carrier up there and I gently put him in and he got in with no problem. A real sweet one. All of the other ones are afraid of people. Good luck.

sounds like conjunctivitis. - I wonder if you could

get in touch with a vet or if you know one...good to have a good relationship with one although I don't and don't know anyone who does really (!)--and perhaps you could start administering the treatment for the pink eye given the circumstances yourself. You're a great person, your idea as to how to catch and transport him to a vet is in theory a good idea, but sometimes these attempts can literally kill a cat (from fright) or he'll go completely insane like a wildcat when you close that door and attempt to get him there, such that the trip will break your heart and I imagine if all that goes well enough and you have a safe return...he may not ever "forgive" you (LOL)--cause they just don't have a brain, let's say, that works the same way as ours, needless to say...my feral cat of 5 years whom I adore and I had quite a 'spat' over bathtime the other day...I still have plenty of wounds to show for it. She just doesn't get, after all these years, that the 'butt-clean' is a necessity when the area (she is an extremely long-haired coon cat)-- is full of well, u know what, and she seems to think I'm trying to kill her-- that we have this misunderstanding is hard to believe--it takes me days to get over...! And she's so clean, fluffy and fresh afterward...and she doesn't have to 'eat' any more of her own 's---' to self-clean...you'd think she'd 'get it' by now, but doesn't happen... being a good person, an intrinsic care-giver like you is its own reward...it has to be, because there are no 'medals' awarded in that category. Just keep on doing what you're doing...but I would try to contact a few vets and say, hey, this is the story, etc., and see if one might give you the drops or whatever the treatment is, in the likelihood that it's pinkeye. It likely is...oh, take a picture, too and show a vet...! GL and all the best to you!

You can use Neosporin ointment, but better is (sm) - Feral cat "Mom"

Terramycin ointment which you can buy on Ebay. Best suggestion would be the vet, though, if you can. Sometimes L-Lysine in a paste, that you just put on their mouth or paw and they will lick it off, is an immune booster. It's hard when you can't touch them. These suggestions, are of course, for if you can pick him up. Keep trying.

OP: Thanks for all the suggestions, really - good to ask here and

find out things that might be helpful. After feeding him for the past, perhaps 3 weeks or so, he finally has allowed me to pat him and even seems like he wants to come closer. I stroke him on his head when giving treats. He is so involved with his treats does not seem to mind the hand at all. I think he must have been someone's pet because when I shook the treat bag the first time he quickly came to me like he knew what those were. I would hate to try to cage him and he never return. Right now breakfast and dinner are on his menu and would like to keep it like that. Am going to get the L-Lysine. Like the idea of putting that on his paw and his licking it off, think that can be accomplished without any problem. I wanted to get an outside "cat house," one that has a warmed floor for the cold months but hubby reminded me of all the animals we have around here including coyotes, other cats, possums (yes I know it is opposum) so might be a real squeeze for the warmth. My next door neighbor has some cat eye ointment but we are both thinking perhaps not friendly enough to allow but I will try the L-Lysine because that can be put on the paws. Thanks everyone!

not to scare... - but my cat had that of the eye

[ In Reply To ..]
when I picked her up, stray, in 1998. Honestly, I don't remember if I even treated her for it because someone actually had her first and I am not sure how it went as far as the pink eye all those years ago...but 13 years later, at age 13 1/2, I noticed a little something looked wrong with the eye, reminiscent of the days all those years ago when she had pink eye...well, it was cancer of the eye, squamous cell carcinoma. 3 operations, my entire savings later, + 8 months of home "hospice"-like care, etc., she passed. (In retrospect I am sorry I did any of that.) I couldn't help but think it was a possibility that the eye cancer had been related to the former pink eye from her youth...again, not to scare! This was very rare, I'm told, very rare. But it is weird how cats seem to get cancer from other things...how some of their cancers are contagious...just word to the wise to treat the thing as best as possible, early as possible. Also, why not keep (indoors) your lovely new-found cat and take him for walks on harness and leash like I do my 5-yo coon cat. She's out right now with my hubs--watching them in the yard! It can be done! (She was feral, too; I think there's even a better chance of a feral actually 'walking' with you!) :) Best of luck!
OP: Never would bring outside cat in as I have - inside cats only, and would never

have them exposed to perhaps feline herpes, feline HIV, etc. My cats never go outside so I will feed, even try to medicate one outside if I think it needs but coming inside forbidden.

House Leaders Plan Separate House VoteMar 20, 2010
Democrats edged closer to finding 216 lawmakers to back a landmark health-care bill Saturday, as party leaders and White House officials were working on an executive order that they hope will win over a substantial number of antiabortion Democrats. The House Rules Committee continued its session on the third floor of the Capitol, where the panel is tasked with setting the terms of Sunday's floor debate. House leaders have decided to take a separate vote on the Senate version of the healt ...

What I See As ComingNov 04, 2016
Whether you like the author or the paper it is from, this story is what I fear is happening to our country. I have had a sick feeling for the last few months as the election gets more and more aggressive and I know that our country will not be better for it after it is all said and done - no matter who wins on Tuesday. Just read it through without thinking about who you support or why.  Try to recognize that our country is being torn apart from threats that are being made about what will ha ...

This Is What I See Coming For WisconsinMar 17, 2011
I have copied and pasted something someone wrote that pretty much sums up Scott (slime) Walker's intentions.   Diane Ravitch has it in a nutshell. Of Scott Walker, she writes: He expects that over time, most public workers will stop paying dues, especially now that they have to pay more for their healthcare and pension benefits. And thus will he cripple, perhaps permanently, a perennial political opponent. If Gov. Walker succeeds, there will be no organized voice to oppose hi ...

Prophecies in those generations had not yet come to pass. As of this time, we have seen every prophecy come to pass except the very next event, which is Jesus removing the Church. Isaiah 53 was written in 700 B.C., fulfilled in A.D. 33. Daniel 2 and 7 were written in 530 B.C., which b ...

Just Coming To This Realization...Sep 28, 2012
Something just struck me today.  I have a feeling that the truth about the two major candidates for president lies somewhere around the facts that Mitt Romney isn't as bad as his gaffes and appearances might indicate, and Barack Obama deserves a lot more credit than his opponents give him.   Disagreement has always been part of political discussion in this country, but I hate where our political climate has taken us--no one DARES to say anything good about "the other side."   ...
