Breast Cancer Awareness, perhaps going too far?

Posted: Oct 7, 2013

In an e-mail from child's 1st teacher, there is a notation that October 15th is wear pink day in honor of the Komen foundation.   While I think it is wrong to over-shelter kids, I also have to wonder in this case if this would be going perhaps too far.  It is nothing I will raise a stink over, my son will not be wearing pink as he does not have anything pink but I am just kind of baffled by this.

Ack, should proof before posting, it was from his 1st grade teacher--sm - anon

We are talking about awareness in 6 year olds. Unfortunately, there are 6 years who have had awareness imposed on them from the people in their life suffering from it. At 6, instead of breast cancer awareness they need more overall health awareness.

I think you may be getting worked up over nothing - BTDT

For kids that age, it's just another activity they do at school without the ability to fully comprehend the scope of the disease. It's enough that you could explain breast cancer is a type of sickness some people get and the school wants to show support for those sick people. Anything more is too reaching.

It's kinda like hat day. You take your dollar on Friday and wear your hat. The kids don't actually connect that their dollar goes for some type of fund raising (at our school, it is for teachers to attend special learning seminars in the summer breaks). To the kids, it's just something everyone goes along with, have fun with, and forget about the next day.

A lot of breast cancer survivors resent pink ribbons and October. Who wants to be reminded about their cancer for a month every year. Especially when wearing pink does nothing at all for the disease. Or Don't Wear a Bra Day... Or stupid Facebook games where you make some mysterious update for breast cancer awareness. Or buying pink ribbon merchandise (corn for the cause??? seriously...) which doesn't benefit anybody except the merchant who is selling the product. Pinkwashing is not a good thing unless it is going to an organization that is actually doing something worthwhile for breast cancer research.

Now I won't say I don't wear pink occasionally or feel proud of being a survivor because that's not true.

But it is an important message in October to Think Before You Pink...

about this with my sister today. She is a breast cancer survivor. She said all it does is remind her of it and when she sees the pink it just gives her worrying thoughts about it.

There's a lot of ugly about this disease. There is a breast cancer community online and you get to know these people. I have many friends with cancer. Some have passed away. There's nothing pink and happy about that. Sometimes F*ck cancer is more appropriate.

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

Anyone With Experience Breast-feeding?Oct 27, 2010
My daughter has a 7-week old.  She is breast-feeding and all is going well.  She is a special ed administrator/teacher and will have to go back to work in December.  There will also be 2 short overnight trips for work.  She wants to continue the breast milk by pumping and have the nanny give the baby the bottle of breast milk.  The problem is, the baby absolutely refuses a bottle.  She wants the breast or nothing.  It is truly a fight a ...

Battle With Breast Lumps, Anyone Else?Jun 04, 2010
I have a family history of breast cancer (aunt with bilateral at a very early age) and have been battling with breast lumps for the past 15 years but very frequently over the last five years or so.  My last breast mass excision was about three years ago after a horrible scare but thankfully it, as well as the others, have been benign.  Three weeks ago I had a horrible attack of cholecystitis (very abrupt) and underwent a cholecystectomy.  While showering three days ago I found yet ...

Breast Mass FollowupMay 07, 2014
A few months ago, I posted a request for prayer.  One of the issues was a suspicious breast lump, which was recommended to be reimaged.  After 3 appointments that had to be rescheduled because of snowstorms here in the Northeast, I had followup images, including ultrasound, and ultimately a core needle biopsy last Thursday.  The radiologist called me yesterday to say the nodule was benign.  What a relief! I just want to thank everyone who prayed.  Those prayers meant so ...

Small Lesion On Breast, How ConcernedOct 19, 2009
I just had a mammogram in March of this year, everything fine. I noticed a slightly bigger than pencil eraser size reddish lesion on 1 margin of my breast day before yesterday. I have had other skin lesions and made visits to the dermatologist as recent as about 2 months ago, had seborrheic dermatitis on my face, also notice sometimes I have like a red, itching place on the upper groin. I wonder if I should be worried enough to go back in and have this latest place checked out? ...

The Breast Pump Industry Is Booming, Thanks To Obamacare. :)Jan 05, 2013
[Interested in a new line of work?] Excerpts from Washington Post article, link to artle below. "The legislators who drafted Obamacare wrestled with cosmic issues of health and spending, but here’s one consequence they didn’t foresee: a boom in demand for breast pumps that has left some retailers scrambling to keep up. Tucked within the Affordable Care Act is a provision requiring insurance companies to cover breast pumps and visits to lactation consultants at no cost to ...

I Have CancerSep 24, 2011
I consider this my MT community.  I feel we have a sense of sisterhood here. Renal cell carcinoma.  What I thought was bouts of kidney stones for the last year has been a massive tumor growing on my left kidney.  CT scan reveals a left lower pole renal mass measuring 10 x 7 cm.  I am scheduled for left nephrectomy on Friday, but hopefully sooner.  Knowing this thing is growing inside me is horrible.  I am handling it very calmly, which is surprising even to m ...

CancerSep 07, 2013
I just had an ultrasound and a biopsy the other day for postmenopausal bleeding. The doctor said he had to test for cancer of course. I found out by many sources that cancer cannot live in your body if your pH balance is over 7.1. So I thought I would share some of this with you. Cancer cannot survive in an alkaline body, which is pH over 7.1. Keep your pH balance over 7.1 by eating these alkaline foods. Of course, the ultimate goal is balance. Eating too many alkalizing foods can lead to its ...

Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...
