My daughter has a 7-week old. She is breast-feeding and all is going well. She is a special ed administrator/teacher and will have to go back to work in December. There will also be 2 short overnight trips for work. She wants to continue the breast milk by pumping and have the nanny give the baby the bottle of breast milk. The problem is, the baby absolutely refuses a bottle. She wants the breast or nothing. It is truly a fight and she screams until she gets the breast. They have even had the father try to transition her.
They have bought many different nipple shapes, sizes, textures, etc. and nothing is working. How can she make this baby transition to a bottle in the next few weeks? My only suggestion was to put a little Karo syrup on the nipple.
Anyone with experience who has advice?
;Fifteen years ago, I went through the same thing as your daughter when I was about to return to work after my maternity leave. I had exclusively breastfed my new baby up to that point and wanted to continue pumping and providing her with my milk while I was away from home. We literally tried every nipple and bottle on the market, and still, she adamantly refused to drink from any of them and would even get MAD sometimes, lol. What finally worked was a combination of using the Playtex nurser system that had a pretty natural nipple design compared to all other bottles. I would begin nursing the baby as usual and would have the Playtex bottle ready to go nearby. After she relaxed into her feeding, I would get a little of my own milk and put it on the nipple of the bottle, and then I would gradually slip the bottle into her mouth as I simultaneously removed my breast. Since the milk was room temperature and the nipple tasted "familiar" she wasn't startled by the new feel or a foreign taste. I continued with this method for several days until finally she took the bottle without a problem. Personally, I think placing mother's milk on the nipple did the trick, but it could've been a combination of things as well.
Here's a link to the Playtex Nurser system that most closely resembles what I used. The design has changed a bit, but it still looks like it comes with the wider, flatter nipple as shown in the picture on the box. http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_9990000004320211P?vName=Baby&cName=Feeding&sName=Feeding%20Accessories&sid=KDx20070926x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=9990000004320211P
HTH! Good luck to your daughter with her new baby!
Btw...don't try switching to any bottle if the baby is ravenous. It needs to be attempted when the baby is relaxed and just having a routine feeding.
