Anyone with experience breast-feeding?

Posted: Oct 27, 2010

My daughter has a 7-week old.  She is breast-feeding and all is going well.  She is a special ed administrator/teacher and will have to go back to work in December.  There will also be 2 short overnight trips for work.  She wants to continue the breast milk by pumping and have the nanny give the baby the bottle of breast milk.  The problem is, the baby absolutely refuses a bottle.  She wants the breast or nothing.  It is truly a fight and she screams until she gets the breast.  They have even had the father try to transition her.

They have bought many different nipple shapes, sizes, textures, etc. and nothing is working.  How can she make this baby transition to a bottle in the next few weeks?   My only suggestion was to put a little Karo syrup on the nipple.

Anyone with experience who has advice?

I never found anything that worked. Even the SIGHT of a bottle enraged my son!

Hopefully someone else here had better luck and can offer some suggestions.

The whole Karo thing is a big no-no now. One of those new rules for babies. Forget that I used to give mine Karo in water if they were constipated!

My first son would only take a bottle.... - Kendra

if I was not around. My husband could easily feed him from a bottle while I was on the other side of the house, but if he could see or hear me, he would not do it. What we ended up doing is having my husband feed him one bottle of pumped milk before bed every night and then when we left him, he was okay. Up until he was weaned, he would NEVER take a bottle if he knew I was around, which made it harder and harder, once he realized that I was still there, just not in the room. I would even have to go outside before he would take it, which worked out well for me because I would just go horseback riding at bed time. Good luck to your daughter! Maybe this will work for her. :)

And as another poster said, he wouldn't have anything but me if he had even an inkling that I was around. He never fed comfortably from a bottle, would look around and constantly stop and start, as if he were hoping I'd show up with the real thing! But, it was helpful for me to be far away, and sometimes he really needed to get good and hungry. We all had to be strong and not cave to the crying, which would ramp up to a more angry cry than hungry cry. We also used Nuk nipples, which 22 years ago were the most lifelike available, but he only took them if the bottle were held so that the nipple was upside down and the hole was facing down. Don't know why, but he took it that way.

With the second, I had learned a valuable lesson. When my first child was born, I was told to give him nothing but the breast for six weeks. With the second I would have none of that, and took a lot of criticism from the people I called the breastfeeding nazinas. Right from day one, we gave baby number 2 a bottle for at least one feeding a day. My husband and others had the chance to bond through feeding, I had a rest, and the child moved easily between breast and bottle.

That bit of advice is not very helpful to your daughter now, but perhaps if she plans on another child, she might give that a try.

Good luck to her! I know how stressful this situation is.

My two cents... - Amber

Fifteen years ago, I went through the same thing as your daughter when I was about to return to work after my maternity leave.  I had exclusively breastfed my new baby up to that point and wanted to continue pumping and providing her with my milk while I was away from home.  We literally tried every nipple and bottle on the market, and still, she adamantly refused to drink from any of them and would even get MAD sometimes, lol.  What finally worked was a combination of using the Playtex nurser system that had a pretty natural nipple design compared to all other bottles.  I would begin nursing the baby as usual and would have the Playtex bottle ready to go nearby.  After she relaxed into her feeding, I would get a little of my own milk and put it on the nipple of the bottle, and then I would gradually slip the bottle into her mouth as I simultaneously removed my breast.  Since the milk was room temperature and the nipple tasted "familiar" she wasn't startled by the new feel or a foreign taste.  I continued with this method for several days until finally she took the bottle without a problem.  Personally, I think placing mother's milk on the nipple did the trick, but it could've been a combination of things as well.

Here's a link to the Playtex Nurser system that most closely resembles what I used.  The design has changed a bit, but it still looks like it comes with the wider, flatter nipple as shown in the picture on the box.

HTH!  Good luck to your daughter with her new baby!  Smile

Btw...don't try switching to any bottle if the baby is ravenous.  It needs to be attempted when the baby is relaxed and just having a routine feeding. Wink

This happened to me also. My son would not take any type of nipple. The pediatrician suggested consulting the berast feeding coach (whatever you call 'em...) The worked with me and my son and with a little bit of time he got the hang of the bottle nipple and has done well ever since. (I think she was a "lactation nurse") Call your pediatrician. I pump and bottle and breast feed still, he's 3 months.

You have some good info already and I'd say I went through the same. sm - Old pro

I learned after the first breastfed baby who would not take a pacifier nor bottle. You cannot wait to introduce it because baby gets set in their ways quickly. One other thing to realize though is that the difference in how the baby has to work to retrieve milk from the breast and from the bottle are totally different so you have to train them too. Like on the breast once they get the milk to let loose and flow, it flows usually very easy as the breast is full so it isn't a lot of work to the baby. It is a continuous sucking method on the bottle to get the milk to flow. So what I found most helpful was enlarging the hole on the nipple. Good luck to your daughter; she is doing the right thing. Just takes some work.

My DIL used the same nipple from the hospital....sm - nanny

for about seven months because it was the only one my grandson would accept without gagging when we would try to feed him with a bottle. She still has time before she goes back to work to get the baby to accept a bottle. It just takes a lot of patience. I think the smaller and softer the nipple the better. All good suggestions above too. Also, she will need a lot of emotional support during this time of leaving the baby to go back to work. Above all, enjoy the little one; babies are such a joy!

Try contacting the LeLeche league. Also my son would never take a bottle. However once I left him for the afternoon and he did take a formula I found in a Doctor Spock's Baby Book. He wouldn't take any commercial formulas! I believe it had Karo syrup and evaporated milk - it was a long time ago. Talk to the pediatrician too.

Diagnosed With Paget's Of BreastJan 03, 2011
This has took me a while to come to terms with it, but I was diagnosed December 3 with Paget's of the right breast. This was misdiagnosed a year ago as eczema. I have to wait and have my 2nd MRI (as I freaked out with the 1st one) on the 31st of this month with a sedative this time, and an ultrasound to find out how far it has progressed. The mammogram is completely clear though and they did not find any lumps. Much prayers are appreciated as I have a 12 and 6 year old and husband at home. ...

Battle With Breast Lumps, Anyone Else?Jun 04, 2010
I have a family history of breast cancer (aunt with bilateral at a very early age) and have been battling with breast lumps for the past 15 years but very frequently over the last five years or so.  My last breast mass excision was about three years ago after a horrible scare but thankfully it, as well as the others, have been benign.  Three weeks ago I had a horrible attack of cholecystitis (very abrupt) and underwent a cholecystectomy.  While showering three days ago I found yet ...

Breast Cancer Awareness, Perhaps Going Too Far?Oct 07, 2013
In an e-mail from child's 1st teacher, there is a notation that October 15th is wear pink day in honor of the Komen foundation.   While I think it is wrong to over-shelter kids, I also have to wonder in this case if this would be going perhaps too far.  It is nothing I will raise a stink over, my son will not be wearing pink as he does not have anything pink but I am just kind of baffled by this. ...

Breast Mass FollowupMay 07, 2014
A few months ago, I posted a request for prayer.  One of the issues was a suspicious breast lump, which was recommended to be reimaged.  After 3 appointments that had to be rescheduled because of snowstorms here in the Northeast, I had followup images, including ultrasound, and ultimately a core needle biopsy last Thursday.  The radiologist called me yesterday to say the nodule was benign.  What a relief! I just want to thank everyone who prayed.  Those prayers meant so ...

Small Lesion On Breast, How ConcernedOct 19, 2009
I just had a mammogram in March of this year, everything fine. I noticed a slightly bigger than pencil eraser size reddish lesion on 1 margin of my breast day before yesterday. I have had other skin lesions and made visits to the dermatologist as recent as about 2 months ago, had seborrheic dermatitis on my face, also notice sometimes I have like a red, itching place on the upper groin. I wonder if I should be worried enough to go back in and have this latest place checked out? ...
