Cat feeding question

Posted: Feb 23, 2012

Our cat is about 7 yrs old.  She's not eating so well, but she's still playing, drinkinig H2O, and hitting the litterbox.  She's also still jumping up on the bed and couch to lie on me.  Should I be worried?

It sounds positive that she continues to play, drink, use the litter box, jump, cuddle. :) Perhaps you can call the vet and share your observations.

I had a similar problem. - Cat Lover

My cat is 16 years old and her appetite had decreased back in August. She is a very mellow cat. She doesn't jump on counters or claw furniture. She mostly just stays put. I thought she was just being finicky with the food, but I noticed that she was urinating quite frequently. I took her to the vet, she was dehydrated and needed to be admitted for IV fluids. They ran some blood tests and she had a kidney infection. I have always fed her the premium foods (Wellness, Innova). The vet told me to give her Fancy Feast to entice eating. It worked !! As long as she ate to get back her strength, I was happy. You may want to try changing foods for a while to encourage feeding but I would take her to the vet for a check up. Good luck and let us know how your little kitty makes out !

wow...my x-vet refers to Fancy Feast as candy catfud - L&L

Kidney infections are probably the 2nd major cat killer (cars are #1). I add water to the Fancy Fast and also keep water out (they will only drink from glasses I have used myself). My new vet indicates older cats should have routine blood work, and she once had a cat who lived to be 32 years old.
32 years old has to be a record! - meow!

Fancy Feast IS Candy Catfood!! - Cat Lover

You are absolutely right. Fancy Feast is not good for cats. But, the "smellier" the food, the more appealing it is. Just like people food...if it tastes good, then it's bad for you. I only used the Fancy Feast to entice eating. Once she got her appetite back, I slowly added the Wellness or Innova back into her diet. I just keep a couple of cans of Fancy Feast around just in case.

Have you checked her teeth? - Happy MT Robin

It's possible she lost a tooth or has a tooth or gum infection which will make hard food uncomfortable to eat.

I have found that 7 is when they tend to slow down a hair, and then 14 is another slow down period (in my experience, anyway).

Have you changed the food at all? When you say she's still drinking and using the litterbox, is it in normal amounts or are you noticing anything to excess? Watch for increased urination or drinking and definitely watch for any potty use outside the litterbox. You didn't say how long the not eating well has gone on, but have you noticed any change in weight? That's another sign to look for. Is the cat "crouching" at all, in other words, hunkering down on all four paws, but not really laying down. That's a sign of a belly ache of some sort.

If this continues beyond a couple of days or anything else changes, get her to a vet asap. Cats are very quiet creatures and you oftentimes don't know that they are sick until it is very late in the game and much more drastic measures need to be taken.

My first thought was her teeth as well. (nm) - CatsCatsCats!

Cat feeding question - KKL

[ In Reply To ..]
For the OP: Is it just one food your cat is refusing or have you tried different brands or flavors or lot #s? If not an illness issue or stress issue....I would suspect the food. Cats will often refuse a food if something is wrong or different about it. Check the "best by" dates on cans or bags of food...keep a log if possible. Pet food companies quite often change ingredients or ingredient sources and the cats know it.

OP...Any updates? - KramersMom

My cat is appx the same age and we're going through a similar thing. She used to only eat 1 flavor of wet food (she has dry available 24/7 but gets an a.m. and p.m. wet), but in the last week or two, she's just not eating as much. Glad I saw the response above as I got different varieties for her to try, and she's eating again, so I wonder now if it wasn't that the manufact cg'd the ingredients. I knew it wasn't her teeth as she would eat the dry. She was also acting totally normal (well, normal for her), wanting belly rubs, running like crazy, etc.

Just was checking on you and thankful for the above responses, too.

When To Start Feeding Kittens Kitten FoodMay 27, 2011
We have kittens :-)  We don't know exactly when they were born but their size is that they sit on the palm of my hand.  We know they are at least 4 weeks old, maybe 5 or 6.  They are running around, bouncing, wrestling with each other and just little balls of energy.  We're are learning which ones are the trouble makers :-)  My question is they are still nursing from the mom.  A couple have shown interest in eating kitten food from a can, which is what we ...

I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. Cat Question Aug 05, 2011
Don't know if you remember my last posts awhile back about a stray cat we started feeding and took care, gave her shelter for the winter and she had kittens.  We've taken the kittens in and adore them all.  Now...here she is 3 or 4 months later, every once in awhile I'll get a glimpse of her nursing them.  Vet told us milk has to be dried up before they can fix her.  However, she is a stray and she has been going out walking around the neighborhood like she has ...

QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...

E-Bay QuestionNov 19, 2013
Hi everyone, I absolutely love Swarovski Crystal, in particular their earrings. I have a couple of pairs that I paid full price for, but they are too expensive. (Earrings run from $60-$300+.) I saw that E-Bay has a really nice selection, and you can just do a Buy Now for way under market price--I'm not into the bidding thing, BTW. Thing is, how do I REALLY know it's Swarovski?
