semipermanent hair color

Posted: Feb 8, 2015

Can anyone recommend a good semipermanent hair color?  My hair is naturally light red.  It turns strawberry blonde in the sun.  However, I'm getting a few gray hairs and want to cover them up.  I really don't want a permanent hair dye.  I would like something that comes in strawberry blonde that lasts for at least 28 shampoos.  I used temporary hair color once a long time ago and used Sun-In as a teenager, but that is all of my experience with dying my hair.  Thanks!

I found a link that might help you. I had to go permanent because I had so much gray. I haven't used semi-permanent in ages. There is also demi-permanent. All are explained in the link as well as reviews.

If you've got the money, go to a salon the first time. - SM

I've done my own color for years at home. Several months ago I was in a hurry and bought a shade too dark. Used it, of course, and hated it.

Went to a salon, told her to lighten it up, had her use the same color product my other girl used where we were from. She put in way too much red and the whole thing was dark red.

No idea what happened; maybe the water out here has too much iron in it, which had an effect on the box color, we don't know. She had to then 4 weeks later strip the color out because the new light color wouldn't go over the old dark color.

I didn't want to go thru another hassle with her, switched to another salon and got it right this time.

*sigh... Go to a salon if you can afford it. No matter what box color you try at home, there's always a chance it won't turn out right and you'd have to go to a salon anyway.

Look at it as treating yourself. Get it done right the first time, then you can box color your gray or roots yourself thereafter.

JMHO.

I used semipermanent a few times, but it - washed out too soon. It was - sm

fine for testing a color... seeing if I liked coloring my hair at all. Turns out I did like coloring it, so I continue because it's fun, and my hair looks healthier, too.

Mine is normally light brown with sunbleached streaks. One time I colored it a little too dark, which came out a little too monochrome. So, I went and got a highlighting kit and added some highlights, then it looked fine.

Next time I did an all-over color, I went a shade or two lighter than before. That turned out nice, because the dark spots went a shade lighter (with a hint of red, which I liked), and the blonde-highlighted parts came out lighter.

I use a permanent dye - sm

Clairol Nice 'N Easy (root touch up and full box) in between salon appointments. My grays come back very quickly, within two weeks (I wash my hair only twice a week), even after the expensive salon color, so I can't imagine a semipermanent color lasting 28 shampoos. If you really have no idea what color to buy, go to Sally's and get an opinion from one of their employees who understands hair color.

Thanks for the suggestions! nm - Redhead

HairColor - has come a long way

from years ago and it can be as cheap as $1 with excellent results. I am a big fan of Dollar Tree hair color. It lasts and looks very natural even as it grows out. It is permanent and it covers gray very well.

Ah, yes. I remember Sun-In! - sm

I remember putting Sun-In on my hair and lying in the sun. It turned orange. And what was the instant suntan we applied to our skin? It turned orange, too. Hee-hee! What was the name of that product?

But in answer to your question about OTC hair color, I think I'd stick with good old Clairol. They've been around forever and are always updating and improving their formulas.

Oh, LOL - see msg

OMG, I used that skin tan stuff once. It indeed turned my skin orange. Worse, it showed my finger spread marks, if you know what I mean. Hard to explain, but if you didn't use the perfect, closed-finger approach, you saw where you missed. Whatta mess!

I know the name will come to me in the middle of the night. How could I even forget the name of the stuff???

Fast tan, or quick tan? - Something like that. sm

I made the mistake of not washing the palms of my hands. Had orange jazz hands at Jazzercize class. LOL.

Sorry I can't help with the hair dye question, OP. I am too lazy to keep up with the maintenance and letting mine go gray (for now).
It was Coppertone Quick Tan. Sm - helper

Introduced in the 1960s. Tanned you overnight without the sun, or in 3-5 hours with the sun. Turned you a beautiful shade of orange.

That is too funny--the goofy things we did as kids. I remember my boyfriend at the time said, "What the heck happened to you?" I told him I used that stuff. It was indeed all over my palms as well.

I'm going to start a thread on funniest beauty story over on Gab forum. I have one that's hilarious that I'll share over there.

I wouldn't rush to a salon right away if your hair color doesn't look right. If it comes out too dark, just wait a bit---it always, always lightens as you shampoo it or get a little natural sunshine on it. Rushing into "fixing" a problem can just exacerbate it. My hairdresser told me that she can only maybe fix something if she knows what went wrong and when to begin with. She has no problem with me coloring my own hair---she even showed my husband how to color my hair--but once I do something to "fix" something, she's lost.

I am curious as to why you shy away from permanent. I will grant you that it is more drying to the hair than semi/demi, but 28 shampoos and the permanent fades anyway. Permanent isn't really permanent.

This semi-permanent product is excellent. sm - helper

Kiss Express Semi Permanent Hair Color is excellent.

You may have to get it on line like through Amazon, or at beauty supply house in your area. It's reasonably priced, easy to use and lasts. You can even buy a couple of small bottles of the colors that you like and mix them, add some of 1 color to the other, etc.

Also, there are no harmful chemicals in the products, no patch test, etc., and like I say the color really lasts.

Definitely use a salon. I got tired of waiting for my - blonde hair to turn gray so I

had it bleached with a lavender rinse. No way could I do this at home.

Have you looked on a website called Just for Redheads? I have been considering trying their henna rinse. they have strawberry blonde. Worth a shot.

Help - Need Hair Color FixFeb 01, 2010
A few days ago I colored my hair black.  The box said (and looked like it would be a soft black), and it turned out way blacker than I imagined (if that's possible).  I usually go brown, but the reason I went black was to try to get back to as close as my natural color while the gray is coming in.  I really didn't want to color my hair, however, between the brown I last colored it, the gray coming in, and the "soft" black that was mixed in with the gray I had too many co ...

What's Good To Use With Color Treated Hair?? SmApr 25, 2010
I have color treated hair, have had color treated hair for about 8 to 10 years.  My hair just seems dry/brittle like somtimes.  I would grow my natural color out, but I'm a lot gray, and then dark brown.  I'd probably look about 10 years older if I did that.  I'm 38, not ready to look older.  Anyway, just wondered if anyone had a good tip on how to keep your color treated hair looking shiny and healthy.  Thanks for any info.  ...

How Can I Add Color To A Drab Room?Aug 19, 2012
I've just rented a new condo which I love except for the lack of color. The owner doesn't want me to hang pictures or paint, because it's her investment property.  I may be able to change her mind in the future,  but in the meantime what can I do to spice it up?  I can't put out any breakable colorful accessories because my cat will get at them.  Other than bright cushions on the sofa, what else I can do?  Any suggestions would be most welcome. ...

Is There Any Help For My HairMay 01, 2011
I understand as we grow older our bodies change, skin gets saggy, wrinkled, loses elasticity, etc and our hair changes.  What I'm wondering is this.  Is there a product, vitamin, or whatever that can make your hair look younger and healthier.  Growing up I had beautiful hair, soft natural curls that the hairdressers said people would die to have curls that are natural like that.  Now at 51 years old my hair is coarse, and frizzy.  I can find some curls here and ther ...

Dog HairJun 14, 2011
For those of you with dogs that shed (like my Golden), can you share you grooming schedule and favorite brush? I've used to use a rake but found a tool that's cheaper than a Furminator (sp?) and doesn't rip the skin. It's made by Oster and called a Shedzilla. I've been brushing him every couple of days but this time of year, I'm wondering if I should do it more often? I like to do it outside to keep the fur out of the house as much as possible. ...

Hair Falling OutFeb 04, 2012
I am devastated right now.  I had long, thick beautiful hair and over the past couple of months I have noticed a big change in it.  Now it is falling out!  Long strands just letting loose.  At this rate, I will be bald in a couple of weeks and that is not an exaggeration.  It doesn't even look or feel like hair.  It is shriveling up and is very light and falling out!  How and why can this happen and will it stop?  Has this happened to anyone? ...

alopecia areata, have you tried any home remeadies that have worked?  I have gone to the dermatoloigst, have received 3 sets of cortisone shots to the scalp so far, no luck, just a few fine hairs coming in.  It should have all grown back at this point from the injections.  So now we are waiting a year to see if anything changes (been about 2 years already so looks pretty permanent right now).  Doc gave me samples of Protopic but basically said she did not expect it to work bu ...

Do You Wash Your Hair Every Day?Jul 02, 2010
I know they say to only wash your hair every other day but I have never been able to do that. I shampoo/condition my hair every day as I cannot stand the feeling of my hair being dirty or greasy-looking or whatever. Pink HairAug 03, 2010
Can anyone recommend a product that will cover gray/white roots without turning my hair a pink color?  Some years ago I was using over the counter color and was actually approached by people, telling me my hair was "purple."  I told my stylist and she said the over  the counter products have a violet base, and when applied to brown hair it gives a pretty highlight.  If you apply it to hair that has lost its color it soaks up the violet color and that's what you see.  ...

Wen Hair Care?Apr 15, 2012

Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009
I have long hair that usually takes about 3 boxes of dye.  I usually only do it about 2-3 times a year and do the all over color each time because my color tends to fade.  I think hair dye might be one of those things that you get what you pay for.  I usually buy the Colorsilk ($2-$3 at Walmart) because it is cheaper and I am usually broke.  This year I think I will splurge a little and buy a more expensive brand.  In the past I have tried the Herbal ess. and Natrual Ins ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...
