I'm an MT who took early retirement

Posted: May 25, 2017

I have arthritis in my hands and back, progressive eye problems and high blood pressure.  After losing several close family members who were in their early 70s, I became extremely depressed working for one of the MTSOs, and I decided I should make the best of my remaining life and decided to take the early retirement to ease the pressure.    My part time IC job and retirement income is about $22,000 a year and I have a tiny nest egg stashed away for emergencies.

My plan was working--having health insurance through our state ACA exchange, not a lot of extra money, but I feel like I am recovering from basically PTSD.  Now the senate is lookinig at passing Trump's health plan that is supposed to be so great.  Under this plan, it looks like my health insurance may be around $12,000 (if I can even get insurance).   Most of the other people in my apartment complex have similar stories--my friend with multiple sclerosis, another almost blind from diabetes.  What are these lawmakers thinking?  Don't they have any idea how a many of our citizens live?  I can't believe these people are so willing to throw away so many people who have been in the working and productive all their lives, just to be treated like this.  How is this making America Great Again?  They make me sick--literally--I think I am getting an ulcer with worry on how I will pay rent, food, and prescriptions until I hit Medicare.  The car will definitely go but don't know what else I can cut since my budget was bare bones anyway.

;

Sorry for your issues but your worry may be - unnecessary. Why not wait for final plan

Borrowing trouble is not good for your health. I would advise you not to look at projections that are created to bash Trump and as an unintended consequence affects people like you bringing more worry into your life.

You have no idea nor does anyone else know what this final healthcare plan will be.

Mandatory federal health care spending now tops - $1,000,000,000,000.

TRILLION. This is just not sustainable.

At this rate of change within the next four years Medicare and Medicaid will consume just over $2000 billion a year, or $2 trillion — an increase of $600 billion a year in spending.

Let me remind you that last year taxes (receipts) rose by a paltry 0.55%, and at this rate of increase over the next four years government revenue will absorb only $72.9 billion of that $600 billion in additional spending — and this assumes that absolutely nothing else in the budget increases in cost at the same time, an utterly fanciful notion.

This proves man cannot solve problems that it started. - There are Biblical truths on how to

deal with things, but in this anti-God culture they have been lost.
Certainly not the Republican men - big picture
[ In Reply To ..]
Somewhere below there was some post about me not understanding the BIG PICTURE. Apparently I am supposed to fall on the sword so the rich pubs can have their tax break?

Here is the big picture: If I do not have my routine maintenance doctor visits and prescriptions, I am going to cost a heck of a lot more when I end up blind or paralyzed from a stroke. Take a look at that big picture.

I guess some people are prone to worry - no matter if it is futile

[ In Reply To ..]
Which is why some people get sick. OP says she is getting ulcer. I think if I worried about things I could do nothing about or did not understand I would have ulcers too.

Sometimes it is best to stay away from the political news/media if you are going to worry.

Dont worry.... be happy! - hawtmk

Social media causes ulcers. I stay off of them and come - here only when I'm waiting for work

I come here for a laugh at all the lefty posters - anger and outrage posts.

Kind of makes me happy to see miserable people attacking Trump from so many different directions day and night. One wonders what they would be doing in real life if Trump were not around to occupy their thoughts and MTStars political board was not here for them to vent.
So glad I could entertain you with my problems - Are you one of those compassionate Christians?
[ In Reply To ..]
I was going to put this on the main board, but since I very much blame the Republicans and their voters, I put it on the political board. If find it repulsive and dishonest when posters try to sneak their political beliefs on the other boards.

So here it is, I am having troubles, may go blind or have a stroke and a totally blame the Republicans, but have a nice day.
Blame whoever pitiful lefty. It sure isn't making - things better for you is it?
[ In Reply To ..]
And while you play the blame game, is this what makes you feel better? You do know that predicting your illness and blaming the Republicans, you could become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Maybe you should read the bible, pray for your good health to return and stay away from politics that upset you.
Liberals hate suggestions to help people realize they can take - charge of their own lives and can

change. A cynic will tell you it can’t be done, but that’s not true. We can all improve ourselves.

I guess it's just easier to blame "rich white guys" and Republicans.

My mom used to say "If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got."
Democrats needs dependent people. It keeps them in - power.
[ In Reply To ..]
xx
Well the Democrats lost power and their only - defense is blaming Russia/Trump
[ In Reply To ..]
But they do like to keep the underclass dependent with "Obamacare" and other government programs that keep people voting for them and dependent on them. Hoping little by little the underclass will become more independent with jobs and upward mobility and see through the Democrats way of entrapping them to stay status quo and vote Democrat.

I think CBO is a pretty good source - furthermore

[ In Reply To ..]
Apparently you think I should sit here silently while a bunch of rich white guys decide my fate? Where does that get me? Just another fiasco like the Trump White House and the Republican congress who do nothing but lie?

I don't think so.

Where does it get anyone to worry about - things they cannot control

[ In Reply To ..]
And the CBO is giving you conjecture. Nothing is written in stone.

What it will get you is ulcers, high blood pressure and headaches to worry about a possible healthcare change for you.

You think Democrats don't lie. LOL. All politicians lie, including Obama about his Obamacare.

It is no wonder some people get sick with a mindset like obsessed lefties. And the beauty of this whole mess in lefties minds is the corrupt lying politicians win when they divide and conquer the voters who can't see a bigger picture of what is going on.

CBO is nothing but Democrat talking points. - nm

No CBO is bipartisan...interesting how their - Independent analysis

Mirrors Democrat and Progressive tenets. Seems like maybe Dems and Progs are RIGHT!

Lol..I'm certain that doesn't work for ya!

I make 22k 40+ hrs a week, 3 kids. It's tough. If it comes to it, consider - dropping insurance

[ In Reply To ..]
There are usually other options for healthcare for uninsured within a community. Try local health departments, community clinics, most offer sliding scale for healthcare and medications. Many hospitals have some form of charity care, a sliding scale fee based on your income. I have insurance that I can't afford to use (high deductible and no pharmacy benefit until deductible met). If I'm still with my company next open enrollment, I'm just going to drop insurance altogether. I can use the extra money for other things like auto expenses and food.

We have Samaritan which is a Christian sharing organization. - It satisfied the govt forced health insurance

[ In Reply To ..]
It's less than $200 a month for a family depending on your plan.

I have something similar. I chose the plan that only pays for - hospitalization. I pay for everday

[ In Reply To ..]
things. I just don't go to the doctor unless I have to. I'm heavily involved in nutrition. I think a lot of illness can be cured with vitamins and minerals.

Thanks, however these are ongoing chronic conditions - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
I see a doctor every 6 months for my eyes to monitor glaucoma and a macular scar. So many of my close relatives have passed from strokes, I have to have my BP monitored and prescribed--it also affects my eyes. My thyroid med also keeps my BP in check and my antidepressant has helped my arthritis (go figure?)

I did not want to be on charity--I wanted to have my insurance with some human dignity.

All I can say is Trump supporters voted for him - and probably the rest of the republicans

[ In Reply To ..]
I have never figured out why these people vote against their own self interests. Everything that Trump said such as that he was for the workers, etc. was a lie. When you get his minions such as Paul Ryan in there cutting everything out for the "little guy," my question is why did those Wisconsin voters put him back in the House? I have never, ever figured that out. I will NEVER vote for a republican again and I have, when they were more middle of the road and not so blatantly and radically out for all the tax cuts for themselves, and no medical care for a lot of us, because they need something to pay for their tax cuts. But I am still baffled as to why people (such as the ones in Wisconsin re-electing Paul Ryan or that horrible governor they have) are voting against their self interests (that is, for example, to have medical care). I know Obamacare isn't perfect, so why weren't they working on fixing that, rather than just trying to get rid of it with something nobody will be able to afford? Maybe that's the idea!

Please don't vote for Trump in the next election! I think the democrats have 22 people lined up to run. At least consider some of them.

Ahh, Retirement In One YearMar 11, 2016
Okay, so I got out of MT 3 years ago (for obvious reasons), took a nice little part time job answering telephones for a mom & pop business. I plan on retiring completely in one year, and am trying to get ideas on what you plan on doing (or are doing) in retirement. Or, heck, even if you have many years ahead of you in terms of needing to work-work, I'm open to ideas. I am thinking of volunteer work. I do know that I don't want to sit around and watch movies all day. I'm th ...

I am so pleased in my stock increase in my 401K over the past 2 weeks.  If this is Trump effect I wish I would have voted for him but I did not vote for president at all given the bad publicity surrounding the 2 choices I was given and I thought the other 2, Stein and whats-his-name were jokes.  Outstanding growth in my retirement fund I have not seen in years.  Hope our country does as well as the stock market with President Trump in charge.  ...

Get A Raise? Employer-paid Health Insurance? Retirement Plan?Feb 17, 2011
I am horrified at what is happening in Wisconsin and many other states.  There has been a systemic effort to take away our rights and this is just the latest. This occurred at a retirement home, not a SNF. The nurse, who did identify herself as one on the 911 line, called 911--following retirement home rules for its employees--when a resident Lorraine Bayless collapsed, but she refused the 911 operator's repeated instruction, and then begging, to initiate CPR, saying it was against the rules, that they were instructed to call paramedics and otherwise stay out of it. Less than a year into the new president's administration, the FBI director was fired.
