explain to the OWS crowd

Posted: May 18, 2012

For the conservatives on the board, this may come in handy if the OWS goons insist on taking up residence wherever they feel they are "entitled."    Oh, and don't mind the looting, raping, drug dealing, and horrible stench because those aren't the real occupiers, they are plants by the republicans to make the real occupiers look bad.  Did I get that right? Wink

How to explain capitalism to an Occupy Wall Street protester

After making its return with this month’s May Day demonstrations, the Occupy Wall Street movement will be out in force this weekend to protest the NATO summit in Chicago. Although the OWSers are not very good at articulating what they’re for, it’s clear what they’re against: capitalism. Many idealistic young people are seduced by the message that government, in the name of “fairness,” must “correct” the income disparity between the super-wealthy 1% and the other 99%. Is there a way to get these young idealists to appreciate the superior morality of capitalism? I believe that there is.

I have the advantage (at least for this purpose) of being a former liberal. I vividly remember how I used to think, and I vividly remember which conservative arguments were eventually successful in penetrating my liberal mind. I have distilled this knowledge in my new book, Left-Hearted, Right-Minded: Why Conservative Policies Are The Best Way To Achieve Liberal Ideals. This is the third in a series of pieces derived from the book.

The book has two protagonists: Liberal Dave, the person I was in my youth, and ConservaDave, the person I eventually became. One chapter imagines Liberal Dave and ConservaDave having a wide-ranging debate as Liberal Dave prepares to join the OWS protests. ConservaDave tries to explain capitalism in a way that might get through not only to Liberal Dave, but to at least some of the young idealists of OWS.

ConservaDave’s first step is getting Liberal Dave to understand the folly of having government try to reduce income inequality. “Here’s the thing about government,” said ConservaDave to Liberal Dave. “It’s made up of two kinds of people. First you have the Bureaucrats — the career civil servants. Some of them are really smart and capable, but some of them are worthless and it’s almost impossible to fire them. But even the smartest Bureaucrats can’t possibly be smart enough to micromanage an economy. That’s why the Soviet Union collapsed.”

“The Bureaucrats are overseen by the Politicos,” continued ConservaDave. “These are the ones who come and go with whatever administration gets elected. Like the Bureaucrats, some of the Politicos are smart and capable — but many of them are highly partisan and are mostly focused on rewarding their friends and punishing their enemies. Both the Politicos and the Bureaucrats are obsessed with keeping their own jobs. That’s why Politicos put a positive spin on everything their administration does, no matter how lousy. And hell hath no fury like a Bureaucrat who’s been told that his job may no longer be necessary. So I kind of jumble the Politicos and the Bureaucrats together and call them all Politicrats. If I ever need a reminder that government is not the solution to every problem, I just think about all of the Politicrats running the government.”

Liberal Dave explains to ConseraDave that OWS has no love for these so-called Politicrats. “This is the start of a Worldwide Wiki Revolution where people are going to take back the power from the special interests — and yes, from the Politicrats as well,” said Liberal Dave.

“Wiki is actually software that allows people from anywhere to collaborate with one another,” said Liberal Dave, explaining that it was named after the Wiki Wiki (“quick quick”) Shuttle in Hawaii. “But the ‘Wiki’ concept has grown way beyond the software. It’s come to mean a continuous, real-time, ongoing collaboration among millions of people around the world who don’t even know each other. That’s how these protests are springing up everywhere. That’s how strangers from all over the world have built Wikipedia into something that people find more useful than encyclopedias written by professional experts. Wiki is all about direct, real-time democracy and empowerment. It’s a brand new model for building communities and society.”

“I don’t think it’s new at all,” replied ConservaDave. “It sounds like capitalism to me.”

“Oh, bite your tongue,” said Liberal Dave.

“I’m serious,” said ConservaDave. “A free market economy is the greatest Wiki collaboration of all. Every day, millions of people who don’t know each other send billions of signals about what they want and need — and how much they’re willing to pay to satisfy each of their wants and needs. And the businesses that do the best job of providing people with what they want and need are rewarded the most. Businesses respond to these signals sent out by the people by directing resources to the uses that are likely to provide the highest reward. So capitalism causes resources to be allocated in a way that is most responsive to what people want and need. How’s that for direct, real-time democracy and empowerment? It’s all based on what the people want and need. Power to the people!”

“Where’s the flag?” Liberal Dave asked sarcastically. “I need to salute something right away!”

But ConservaDave was still on a roll: “And how do we set prices under capitalism? Do we let the Politicrats do it? No! We crowd-source it to the Wiki wisdom of the masses. And do we let the Politicrats decide how much everyone gets paid? No! The Politicrats are no match for the Wiki Wisdom of the Market. The Wiki Wisdom processes billions of signals, billions of data points, in a way that even the most brilliant Politicrat could never hope to replicate.”

Later in the conversation, Liberal Dave tried to draw a distinction between “good” capitalists like Steve Jobs and Wall Street vultures who just move money around. Steve Jobs was OK, according to Liberal Dave, because he actually made things that made our lives better.

“How do you think people like Steve Jobs are able to bring us all those wonderful products that make our lives better?” retorted ConservaDave. “Those ‘vultures’ who ‘just move money around’ are the ones that enable those visionary entrepreneurs to raise the funds to develop their products. And you’re right, a lot of those products do make our lives better — and not just fun things like iPods. Think of all the medical devices and drugs that save people’s lives, the software that helps poor kids learn, the agricultural innovations that help people in the Third World feed themselves — the list goes on and on. Millions of important inventions would never see the light of day if we didn’t have super-smart investment bankers who work 100 hours a week raising money for entrepreneurs, if we didn’t have commercial bankers working with them to provide loans, if we didn’t have investors willing to risk their money. If some of these people get rewarded handsomely for their special skills, energy and daring, so be it. A lot of middle class jobs depend on these folks, both in the financial services industry and in the multitude of industries they raise money for. And do you think New York could afford its generous welfare state without the wealth generated by these folks?”

The conversation went on to cover a broad range of other topics, including the 2008 financial crisis, the stimulus, taxing the rich, and how those societies with government-enforced “equality” actually have the most entrenched ruling elite. Did any of ConservaDave’s arguments get through to Liberal Dave? I’m living proof that they eventually did.

i'd like to ask everyone on the board a rather personal question. - Zville MT

The personal story of the guy who wrote this makes me want to ask you all how each of you came to the decision to be either a liberal or a conservative and if you were ever one and changed your mind to be another (like, you were liberal in college and are now conservative or vice versa)?

I'll start. I was actually very liberal in high school (though I think most of that was in rebellion - my dad has always been a conservative). In college, I worked in the financial aid department part time and helped people fill out the forms to get them money for college and this made me even more liberal - believing everyone deserved an opportunity and that the government should help those that can't afford it. I even worked the phone banks for Clinton during his first and second campaign!

I taught for two years after college, proud union member for both years. During the summers I would work temp jobs to make extra money. The temp agency I worked from offered me a job in thier office doing payroll and it was for more money than I was making teaching, so I accepted - I had pretty much already decided I didn't want to teach anymore (I worked in a "rich" district and the parents were impossible to work with). So I went to work helping other people find work - for me, this was a libs dream job!

This was actually my reality check. We placed mostly clerical jobs, but also had some people who would only do light industrial - warehouse work, pick-n-pack, that sort of thing. There were two girls signed up that would only accept light industrial work because they had no clerical skills. Now, in the office I worked at, we had several computers set up with tutorial programs, like to learn how to type or increase your speed or how to use an adding machine and/or increase your speed. These programs were free to anyone to come in at any time to work on thier skills, as most often, clerical jobs paid more than warehouse jobs. These girls were told about this routinely and asked to come in, but they never did (even though they would come in the office about once a week and hang out with our job counselor for an hour or so).

Anyway, these two girls would get a call from us any time a light industrial job came open and if it was a true temp job (only a couple of days or weeks) they would accept. If it was a job that could turn permanent, they turned it down, every time. Finally, my boss asked them one day why they never accepted any of the long-term jobs that were offered. Thier response was that thier welfare checks were for more money. Rather than taking a job that could become permanent (which would have meant more money than the temp job), they chose to stay on welfare and not work. Up until this point, I never believed that there were people who were actually like that - everyone on welfare just needed a chance to find a job, they weren't sucking off the system! I realized then that there were people willing to just sit back and let the government take care of them and that the money I paid in taxes was helping them do it.

I'm still all about helping people when they're down, but when I actually saw real-life people turning down work because it was easier on welfare, I changed my attitude towards how that help should be provided and government's role in our lives.

OK - no flaming please, on this post or others who choose to tell thier stories. Maybe we could all understand each other better if we knew each other's histories - and maybe no more name calling? :)

If they're making more on welfare, then that means - the jobs were paying too low. (Like MT!)

[ In Reply To ..]
Also, we all know ourselves enough to know what jobs will be appropriate for us, and which ones will not work out at all. Often these agencies just try to put a warm body in these jobs, without considering the person's suitability.

For example: I absolutely DETEST answering phones. So if I were offered a receptionist position with phones ringing off the hook all day long, it wouldn't matter whether it became permanent or not - I wouldn't be able to get out of there fast enough. And the time and paperwork with getting on assistance has to be taken into consideration. I wouldn't want to take a job knowing that it wouldn't work out, and then have to go through the whole process again.

If the jobs a welfare or unemployment agency was suggesting to me were actually realistic in terms of my skills, and if the pay would at least make my financial situation better, I'd want to grab one of them pronto. But to just go, "Job (crane operator) + Warm Body (person who can barely drive a car) = Success, just doesn't work.

Or welfare pays too much - nm

In the past people would do any job they could find to earn money for the things their family needed. We have gone from that to....I won't take a job if I don't like it. You may not like a job a temp service offers you, but money is money and I would much rather work a job I didn't like to earn money until I could find a better job...than to refuse the job and live off of government cheese. This is a BIG part of our country's problem.

Why should taxpayers have to pay for a welfare check, when the recipient was offered a job and just didn't take it because they didn't like it. For someone to rather receive government assistance than take a job offered to them for whatever reason is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. No wonder we spend the money we do on entitlements. It is this mindset that irks me!

I don't ever wanna hear the lower class complain about their situation if they are gonna refuse jobs and stay on government assistance simply because they didn't like that job they were offered. That is totally BS!

Perhaps it would help to think that maybe that crappy job might lead to something better if you just do the job well. It is amazing what hard work at a crappy job might get you...for example....might get you off of government cheese.

This post explains exactly why we, as a country, are facing what we are. I was taught pretty much the same as you. Self-sufficiency, resourcefulness and, if you do not like your circumstances, work at changing them. When I posted my story, the first comment was rude and insulting, and making horrible comments about poor people. Those that truly need help, should get it, and I have never stated differently. Those that refuse jobs or are scamming the system, should get absolutely nothing. It is amazing how many of these "gimmees" you mentioned are going to be the hardest hit when the cuts start. We are so on the path of Greece, now over 100% of GDP, it is going to take some major cut backs. Yet not one of the posters that embrace the entitlement programs and have the hand-out mentality have ever posted any sensible thoughts, only write "repubs want children to starve in the street". You do not have to be a brain surgeon to figure out, using a very simple example, if you continue to eat from a loaf of bread, never replace the bread, and refuse to learn how to make bread, sooner or later you are running out of food. If you have no other valuable skills, you have nothing to barter with to improve your life. You then are beholding to whomever is in power...and, there is your socialist society.

As you, I was also very liberal - Conservative

well into my 20s. I went to work at a hospital in an area that specialized in indigent care. Over a period of years, seeing first hand, the flat out abuse, fraud and illegal gains by so many, it made me sick. The truly poor were being deprived to support the depraved. In many cases, these scams of the system were so profitable, they were pocketing tax free money and services that far exceeded what I was making working full time to support their "government benefits". I lived on a budget, paid my own way including education, and never took a hand out. All the while, watching people the same age as I was, refuse to work, refuse FREE education, refuse FREE job training; all because they didn't feel like it. After 15 years of trying to right those wrongs and help those that were poor and really in need, I threw in the towel. I still do a lot of volunteer work and I also, until recently, supported a battered women's shelter with food, clothing, donations, services, makeup, and household furniture/items to get them established in their own apartments. The director of the shelter, appointed by the government to run it, embezzled millions of taxpayer dollars from this organization. That was the final straw.

Clinton's outright abuses were another contributing factor and their complete total subservience to Soros. Obama just stepped in where Clinton's stepped out in that regard.

Yours was a very thought provoking post. Would be great to see more like yours. Thank you!

My father hated any and all politicians. He felt both parties consisted of those who would do and say anything to keep their position and those who would do and say anything to get the position they wanted. I can't say as I disagree with that actually.

My parents taught me that to get anywhere in life you couldn't depend on someone else....you had to work hard to achieve your goals because no one was going to give you something for nothing. My parents taught me how to take responsibility for my own actions and not blame others for the situations I found myself in. They taught me that if I failed at something, I needed to learn from that mistake and move on.

I do understand the desire liberals have for helping those less fortunate. However, I was taught to help those less fortunate through charities and the local church. Not by taking from one to give to another. Robin Hood was a good entertaining story, but it doesn't work out well in real life, IMO.

Too many Americans are abusing the system and these entitlement programs are a big reason we are so far in debt. When people choose to stay home and live off of government cheese because the check pays more than actually getting out and working for a living, there is a MAJOR problem there.

I've seen people sell their food stamps for money for a tattoo. I've seen people who work odd jobs getting paid under the table so they could still receive a disability check. I have seen people paying with food stamps while their fingernails were professionally done and their cell phone was more expensive than mine. I've seen people who are living off government cheese but always seem to find the money for their cigarettes and beer.

We have TOO many people abusing the system and as long as we have politicians trying to buy votes by promising more freebies, this is just going to get worse and will eventually take us under.

Americans were once too proud to even consider taking a handout. They would either politely say..no thanks...or they would trade you. Now it seems like all we do is line up with our hands out saying...you owe me...gimme.

My story - what if

[ In Reply To ..]
I have never really felt like I belonged to either group. Both groups had issues I agreed and disagreed with. I grew up in a conservative town, but political opinions were never pushed on anyone. My parents would explain issues to us and then let us make up our own minds as to what we believed, but they always told us what each side was for. My first election I was old enough to vote for I voted for Jimmy Carter (don't even remember who ran against him). I can't remember why I voted for him. Maybe he just appealed to me and I felt like he cared more about people. Truthfully I don't remember. Then at 20 I joined the Army. Felt it was the right thing to do to serve my country. While in the service we were not allowed to have political opinions and if we did we were to keep them to ourselves. We were in the Army and we followed the military guidelines, not civilian life. Therefore we didn't vote. When Reagan won I remember watching it on TV overseas and I was not happy, but again I kept it to myself. I thought the election was rigged and that something funny was going on. All in all he turned out to be a good president and the economy started coming back. Mostly though I was in the Army and living out of the country through his whole presidency, so I don't remember too much about him except I agreed with some of what he did. Couldn't stand Nancy though. The next election I could vote in and I voted for Mondale. The election after that I voted for Dukakis (yes even with that stupid picture of him in a tank LOL). Then the next election I voted for Clinton, as I didn't like Bush Sr and our economic situation was not good. Unfortunately it got worse under Clinton so I voted for Dole. Then I voted for Bush cos I felt the country could not afford a third Clinton term (under Gore). Then I voted for Bush the second term because I did not agree with Kerry's voting record and ideas.

I guess I've just never felt part of any party. I had to even look up all the parties one time and what each one of them believed and felt I fit more in with Libertarians, but even then there is a lot I don't agree with.

I guess I'm liberal on some issues (like I'm for gay marriage (shhhh - don't tell DH that LOL). I'm for a women's right to choose what she wants to do on abortion, though I'm against abortion, but I believe every individual has the right to choose, just hope they choose the right way and if not that will be between them and their maker, but I hate abortions because it's not fair to the unborn child. I'm more conservative on other issues like the economy, the constitution, protection of our country, but yet I don't agree with every issue the conservatives have. I guess it all depends on a specific issue.

As for politicians in general I don't trust many of them. They all lie to get elected. Tell you that one group is doing something when they are doing the same thing. I have faith in very few politicians. Especially when they tell you one thing and then turn around and do/vote the opposite. I hate the phony politicians. I hate the one's who party like its 1999 and show off their riches and laugh at and make fun of the people who are suffering. I don't think with our economy going the way it is it's not right for any president to go on vacations that cost over $500,000 and laugh about it while the country suffers. I think every politician should have their pay cut drastically. Especially when the country is suffering. It seems as though they are rewarding themselves for doing a poor job. There are few politicians that I think have done a good job. Maybe 3 or 4. I think too many have been bought by wall street. Until that gets resolved it's going to be tough.

Here are my viewpoints on issues, maybe that will help understand where I fall (liberal or conservative):

1. I wish the economy would get fixed. I don't care who fixes it either. I don't care if a republican, a democrat, a libertarian, or a businessman fixes it, I just want it fixed. I'll give credit to whoever does do it (no, not just talk about what they wish or dreamed of, someone who actually puts into action steps to fix it).

2. I want jobs in the country for people to work. We live in a country with many smart people with good ideas. There is no reason why so many people should be unemployed. There are empty buildings, factories back east. I'd love to see them open up, which would need some work, so that means jobs for carpenter and electricians, etc. Then get them working again. We need clothing mills, places to make toys and other things we use here in this country. We need food production (have you seen what they eat in China?. Newest thing is eggs cooked in young boys urine and human fetuses. If they eat that and think nothing wrong with it, I hate to think what else they put in food. Heck, I think we should be making a lot of stuff and exporting it to other countries.

3. I want everyone to be able to afford a home if they want one.

4. I want someone to figure out the social security system and if we are paying into it, why is there not going to be any money for me, since I'm paying into it believing I will get SS when I retire.

5. I want the wars to end. I don't want to be involved in forever wars with no deadline for them to end.

6. I want the millionaires to pay their fare share of taxes. Just read something like 1000 millionaires did not pay anything in taxes last year. I think there should be a flat tax rate. Say 10% of what you make. That would be fair. Someone making $10K a year would pay $1K and someone making a million would pay $100K. There should be no loopholes for anyone.

7. I want the gangs to stop and the race baiting. I want it to be safe to ride a bus without a group of teens beating people up or walk down the street without thugs beating you up. I want a president who will stand up against racism.

8. I want hunger in this country to end. We have vast fields all over the country. In this day and age in this country, nobody should go hungry.

9. I want all our kids to have a good education and if kids want to go to college to know there will be a job for them when they graduate.

10. I want the parties to one day get along with each other. Tired of both sides not voting for something because the other side came up with it.

11. I don't want closed door backroom deals in politics. When a president says he can work with both parties he should at least try to.

12. I want the media to actually report the news and not lie about the other side. If something is wrong I want them, as the media, to question it.

13. I think welfare should be limited to the people who really need it. I think there is too much abuse. Create jobs and get the people back to work and off welfare. Unless you are disabled or have an other dire need for welfare you should be working.

Other issues I just take on a day to day basis. You can probably see by who I voted for and where I stand on issues I am a little of both or others. I think a lot of what I mentioned is not party related.

What I've come to realize/learn as I get older that the two parties really are no different. It's just a smoke screen to make people think there is a difference, yet the same people behind the scenes are pulling the strings.

Also, I'm of Hispanic heritage. I would love to see a Hispanic president and first lady, but I also know that if there is nobody qualified for the job you can't put someone in just because they are Hispanic.

This is sure to rattle the Liberal cage - Good! Somebody needs to wake 'em up

OWS claims they're for the little people, the 1%. They claim everyone needs to pay their fair share (to be determined in a very selective, biased, prejudiced way).

When Facebook went public, owners became some of richest individuals in the entire world. Where is OWS protesting that? Why was the grounds around Facebook offices not "occupied" with the filth of OWS? Why was there no riots by OWS about the ohhh...so unfairness of it all?

OWS nothing but a bunch of free-loading, crazy hypocrites. Guess that answered my question.

of many (middle income wages have not adjusted up with inflation for 30 years)yet 1%s profit on that graph goes straight up during the same period of time. We also live in a corrupt society where too many game the system instead of working for a living, and those of us supporting ourselves have to pay for the lazy. Nothing against the idea of capitalism, but it has been corrupted and it seems the few have too much power. Congress is corrupt, greed rules the day. This is reality and blame goes both ways IMO.

THAT IS REALITY, not their selective crap. BTW - When was the last time you got a paycheck from someone on welfare? Or someone that wanted to only work 30-35 hours a week? When was the last time you assumed the complete liability for a business, all liabilities, all expenses, all costs, insurance, utilities, all employees and taxes, SS for employees, all supplies, transporation for a business? There is common sense, then there's those that have no idea what capitalism is and how it works, and then there's OWS...THAT, AGAIN, IS REALITY.

Romney Tells Ohio Crowd Chrysler Moving Jeep Factories Oct 29, 2012
Chrysler's statement (and italics): "Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China." BTW, the Daily Beast calls this an example of Romney's many "**-You lies," "dishonesty so blatant, so consciously abusive of facts that everyone knows." My indignant descriptions have been much longer, but their...very succint version says it all. ...

Wanda Sykes Flips Off Crowd After Getting Booed For Calling Trump A ‘Racist’Nov 14, 2016
In a Boston comedy show last night, comedian Wanda Sykes was loudly booed by large portions of the audience near the end of her set as she referred to President-elect Donald Trump as a “racist, sexist, homophobic person.” Sykes set at the Comics Come Home benefit show in the TD Garden, hosted by Dennis Leary, was pretty much an anti-Trump tirade, coming on the heels of Tuesday’s shocking victory by the real estate mogul. At one point, she described Trump as an “orangutan,” stating s ...

why the tea party is continually labelled as racist when the Congressional Black Caucus has called Allen West and Herman Cain Oreos, Uncle Tom, etc.  I guess perhaps you are allowed to say offensive racial slurs if you are black because if a white person had called President Obama an Oreo because he is of mixed race, that would have been on every news channel, mentioned in every blog, and that person would have been called a racist.  I'm so tired of double standards.  Also, h ...

Perhaps You Can Explain This To MeJan 11, 2011
This is a link to a cached page of a gun manufacturer that is featuring some gun part that is engraved with the words "you lie" to commemorate Joe Wilson yelling at President Obama at the joint Congress speech on health care reform.  Appaently the ordering web site was taken down on January 9.  (interesting how all of a sudden these web sites disappear).  I guess this is something like a limited edition stamp or coin grandma would collect? What is the purpose? &nb ...

significance of the president pardoning a turkey at Thanksgiving?  Like the president doesn't just eat another turkey.  It would have been funny if Obama had said....."Pardon this turkey?  Screw that!  Off with its head!  Oh...and while you are at it...make some sweet potato pie and some dressing." ...

how comparing President Obama to Hitler is racist?  Last time I checked....Hitler was white.  Also, I don't recall hearing any complaints from the left when they compared Bush to Hitler.  More double standard, eh?  The first black president can't handle criticism so he needs unions thugs, the NAACP, and the black panther party to bully people while they continually throw out the race card?  I naively thought that our first mixed race president would bring races ...

why Obama has given Nasa a new mission of improving relations with muslims?  What in the heck do Muslims have to do with our space program?  The Muslims who aren't extremist don't have a problem with us.  It is the extremists that do and they will continue to hate us no matter what we do....that is unless we convert.  Until then...we are still infidels that must be put to death in their eyes.  I'm sorry but the more Obama talks, the more I realize his Mus ...

Next time you encounter all the OWS naysayer blowback such as has been seen here lately, and especially when accusations of alleged movement “disorganization” and “failure to get its message across” emerge, here’s a little list you could throw down that shows what OWS was able to accomplish in its first 55 days, reflecting locations of visible documented OWS movement presence.  In light of these FACTS, there is simply no way anyone can honestly say the way this ...

Please Explain This, Trump Supporters, If You WillJul 20, 2017
This is from Trump's recent interview with NYTimes in regards to health care. TRUMP: But what it does, Maggie, it means it gets tougher and tougher. As they get something, it gets tougher. Because politically, you can’t give it away. So pre-existing conditions are a tough deal. Because you are basically saying from the moment the insurance, you’re 21 years old, you start working and you’re paying $12 a year for insurance, and by the time you’re 70, you get a nice plan. Here’s ...
