advantages are to the United States in giving up control of the internet. How does it benefit us? I guess I must have missed something.

Obama freely handed over the issuing of addresses to an "international body" and removed it from the nonprofit that has been running it for years. This body will contain countries where free speech is restricted..Can you say Russia, and now Crimea? Political sites can be removed, personal blogs can be removed, ANYTHING not pleasing to the international board can be removed at whim.

Also, this new board can now institute a tax, fine, limit your content, remove your content if they don't like it, refuse to give you internet access w/o any explanation; the list is endless.

REASON: BECAUSE OBAMA HATES AMERICA, AND CARES NOTHING FOR US CITIZENS, THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS, OR FREE SPEECH. Yet you still have the Obama sheeple defending this idiot.

I always heard that B.O. was a very intelligent man. I'm beginning to doubt that, or maybe he's intelligent, but has no common sense, or maybe he truly does hate America. There is nothing about this latest act that I understand. I hope saving America will still be possible after his term is up.

In fact, it saddens me that some Americans think this. Regardless, I just want to reassure you that America is not "giving up control" of the internet.

This isn't about internet services or internet providers. Nor is it about internet access, taxes, or how we are billed.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is in charge of overseeing internet domain names and addresses. They will be relinquishing their role by the end of next year in favor of a to-be-determined global body.

If anything, they cause further anxiety regarding this "to-be-determined global body." How can you not see that Russia, China, North Korea and/or Iran would love to be in control of the Internet and impose their warped censorship on the rest of the world? There is no guarantee that it won't be one entity or a combination of those four above or Santa Claus for that matter. How can you be so naive?????

Unless that poster is in a position that knows for a fact what is going on, just an odd statement. Kind of would be like me saying "I want to assure you that Obama personally told me this or that" Just a bunch of empty words.

Calm down is just an expression. And one aptly used, in my opinion, in a thread where posters are declaring (incorrectly) that America is "giving up control" of the internet, and that Obama "hates" the U.S. and is trying to incite a revolt. (!)

We are merely giving up overseeing the nonprofit that manages the internet domain names and addresses (ICANN- Internet corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the orgnaization that manages domain names for websites, etc. The US is merely stepping back from its contractual relationship between the ICANN and the Commerce Department. John Postel from USC used to manage the internet. When he passed, the Commerce Department contracted with ICANN to handle it. The contract expires next fall. They are now getting the key parties together to establish a new structure WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT! (specifically Russia and China).
It would be NICE IF PEOPLE WOULD ACTUALLY RESEARCH A SUBJECT FROM A NONBIASED SOURCE OF INFORMATION BEFORE FLAPPING THEIR ILL-INFORMED OR COMPLETELY UNINFORMED GUMS.
