Federal policy has worsened primary doctor shortage.

responding to a 2008 Physicians Foundation Survey, about half stated they would consider leaving medicine.
A CNN report summarizing the findings stated that “many [primary care physicians] said they are overwhelmed with their practices, not because they have too many patients, but because there’s too much red tape generated from insurance companies and government agencies.”[2]
In response, one would have expected that policymakers, when assessing the merits of a proposed healthcare initiative or regulation, would weigh the measure’s likely impact on making primary care practice less burdensome. Yet, such consideration was apparently given little weight when the Health Information Technology for Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was passed as part of the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. HITECH broadened the authority of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to utilize pay-for-performance (P4P) programs as a means of physician compensation. Needless to say, HITECH’s passage struck a major blow to physician autonomy.

The same with nurses. My sister experienced this.
The average doctor ask THREE QUESTIONS before making a diagnosis.
Your auto mechanic asks more...
They only spend about 18 minutes per patient.
And if we had single payer - Burt the Cat

we would not have thousands of different forms from all the insurance companies and one set of rules.
Single payer means even more regulation, more paperwork, - and 17 cents on the dollar for docs.

It's govt regulation.
Just look at the layers of regulation due to Medicare, Medicaid, EMR,etc. - It will only get worse.

I have a sister-in-law who is a doctor - pulmonary. She does indeed make a good income, but she still has student loans she is paying off after 10-12 years of college. She used to be in Vegas but moved to California. One of the main things that is a stumbling block for doctors is the amount of insurance they have to carry. Because we have such a litigious society, the premiums are exorbitant. I think many consumers are greedy because they see a big payday if the outcome of a procedure is not exactly what they expect. Now that is not to say that there are doctors who are quacks who butcher patients and should be sued, but there are also very good doctors who do their best to help their patients but still have to cover themselves with extreme amounts of insurance because of those bad doctors. My son is in high school and very few of his friends are looking to get into medicine because as they say, there is no real money in it anymore. Sad!
That's why foreign doctors come here. They want to - make more money that the socialist

He doesn't accept Medicaid. I think you are going to see a lot more of this soon.

in their own health. In three questions you could find out if the chronically ill patient is participating in their own care. Or if they just want a magic pill so they won’t have to make an effort. It’s usually the latter.

Two GOP Pols Risk Execution By Primary In A Fleeting Jul 07, 2013when they admitted on page 2 of the linked NYT article it wasn't likely the IRS "targeting" of conservative groups was politically motivated. Senator Roy Blunt R-MO, up for re-election in 2016, and Rep Charles Boustany R-LA were wise to wait until an extended holiday slow-news cycle to make the admission. That way, it might get drowned out by all the celebratory fireworks and gunshots, both intentional and accidental, that produced fatalities and injuries, some of whom were ...
GOP Senators Fail To Head Off Primary Challenges Aug 31, 2013
From the NY Times
WASHINGTON — For the past two years, Republican senators facing re-election have very deliberately spent millions of dollars, hired multiple consultants and cast scores of conservative votes with one goal in mind: avoiding the embarrassing primary conflagrations that befell their party in 2010 and 2012 and cost Republicans a chance at taking back the Senate.
