Who would you vote for?

Posted: Apr 12, 2015

First, who would be your ideal candidate for President - this can be someone who has already announced or someone completely off the radar.  Why would you vote for this person and who should he/she choose as a running mate?

Second, of those who have announced (or will soon announce), who will you vote for in the primaries and why?

For those who are independent voters, maybe choose a candidate from each party and tell why they might win your vote.

Please no bashing each other's choices - keep the discussion about why you would vote for someone, not why you wouldn't vote for someone else.  Keep it positive and who knows - your post may at least make someone look a little closer at a candidate they hadn't considered before.  Smile

I was leaning toward Clinton but I did not like the way she handled the Benghazi mess and did not believe she was truthful about it. So she has a strike against her already. Cruz I just think he is a liar completely. His oh I have to enroll in Obamacare because it is the law is IMO a lie so he has at least 1 strike against him. I was hoping Mitt Romney would run again, but that is a no. I also like a lot of what John McCain has to say. He is strong on foreign policy and a lot of what he says just makes sense to me. I would love to see him and Hillary on the ticket for now, subject to change.

Whether they are democrat or republican makes no difference to me. I want someone who will turn this country around and make us strong and whole again.

Too early for me to say, but good subject:) - Independent Thinker

That's why I'm here, possible candidate info/discussion. I can tell you who I won't vote for, but don't want to spoil your positive post:) What I can tell you is that though all the message-bearers have flaws (by definition, being politicians and former lawyers), but the message is what I vote for, hoping they will do what they say they will.

I really would've liked Elizabeth Warren because she's the only big-league politician that addresses what I truly believe is the problem, which is that the middle class is falling into poverty because they are the least protected. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy has never resulted in "trickling down" and stimulating the economy, nor has greater government assistance or protection of the poor bumped anyone poor up to the middle class. The biggest spenders in this economy are the middle class, not the wealthy - and they bear the brunt of our tax burden.

The chasm between the wealthy and the poor is getting wider and deeper, and just like one of my favorite novels, The Good Earth says: "When the rich get too rich and the poor get too poor, that's when change will happen." Interestingly, that novel was written about the conditions in China before the Communist revolution. It also just as easily could've been written about Germany before the Fascist revolution. Or Russia. Or Korea. Or Vietnam and Cambodia. What I don't want to happen is that due to economic frustration, we get some charming and brilliant sociopath/psychopath like Pol Pot or Adolph Hitler that slips in under the radar, saying all the right things to the biggest knee-jerk reactionaries in some kind of misguided revolt.

However, not to worry - I don't think we're even CLOSE to that point yet, but I do think some political machines are trying to use such reactionaries to try to panic us into thinking we are. In the end, I'd just like us to make sure we learn from history, both world history and our own - without squinting at the parts we don't want to see from our own parties - lest we are doomed to repeat it;)

I'm becoming more and more interested - sm

in Jim Webb since I heard he may be running as a Democrat.

I agree with your opinion about Hillary, Wall Street's darling Hillary. I believe she will bend over backwards to appeal to Israel, and I believe she will agree to attack Iran, just like she voted FOR the Iraq war.

My personal favorites of them all are Bernie Sanders with Elizabeth as VP (or the other way with Elizabeth in the President's position).

Another thing I don't like about Hillary is that she took the liberty of wiping out her computer and server after they had been subpoenaed. I wonder what she had to hide! I wouldn't vote for her, anyway; I simply don't trust her. And I'm a Democrat (though I usually am a registered "unaffiliated," and tend to vote Democratic.

And I guess the entire country is supposed to be sitting around all day, waiting for her coronation -- er -- announcement today. She is soooooooooo phony!!!

What is it about Bernie Sanders - that you like?

Bernie is kind of a modern day Harry Truman. He says it like it is and you can always trust him, no doubt whatsoever. Not an ounce of pretentiousness. What you see is what you get, open, honest, and a champion for the common man. He believes we should all have good healthcare, fair wages, a good education, and that corporations are not people. He believes in diplomacy first, conflict as a very last resort, and, as a Jew, believes in a Palistanian state. I will, however, not vote for him for president. My vote will go to Hillary Clinton with her experience in foreign policy and the instant recognition and respect she already garners throughout the world. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren will do more good just saying in the Senate where they are.
May I ask what exactly you like about her foreign policy? - Like an accomplishment, maybe? (sm)

Serious question. I guess experience is different, though, than accomplishments. Experience, maybe, accomplishments, don't see any.

Ok, but I haven't said what I think about Hillary :) - Independent Thinker

[ In Reply To ..]
Nana7 did though. I'll have to look more into the candidates you mentioned, and if anyone has any more info, feel free to share. As for what I think of Hillary, here are my thoughts:)

Many of her ideas I still support, but she wants to spend too much, and it's money we still don't have. In fact, I wish one of the candidates, I don't care whom, would really pledge to create and work with a bipartisan congressional committee, whose main job was finding and trimming the fat off, government waste. We'd find a lot of money that way, if we'd just look.

As for my other thoughts, to be honest, I would prefer the younger, more optimistic Hillary Clinton, rather than the jaded, career politician one we've got now. It's almost like she's become the very thing she was originally against. She's part of the machine and has become just a tad shady and less transparent.

Not because of Benghazi, because I think that was a faux scandal. The House bipartisan intel committee was very thorough in its investigation and ruled a few wrongdoings, but Hillary's wasn't one of them. Just because we don't know everything that happened there doesn't mean we can assume the worst. In fact, "Bush the I" had a drug lord on the CIA payroll (Noriega), for G's sake, and his administration helped him into power, then spent lots of US money to depose him when Noriega got on a power trip (which duh, he was a drug lord, what'd you think he was gonna do?), killing thousands of soldiers and civilians in Panama and no one said much at all. However, we didn't have Rupert-Murdoch-the-Stalker Fox News back then either. Maybe there's something to Benghazi, I don't know, but I really think there were national security issues at work there that if we knew the ins and outs of, we'd be compromising further operations and national security if we knew, too. We can't always assume the worst without proof.

Regarding her emails, it's not so much the erasing them that bothers me, there could be good reason for that - it's her silence on it. It does look guilty, I admit, but this could be another instance of it not being what it looks like. The sun doesn't go around the earth just because it looks that way. I mean, what if she were hacked by political opponents or Foxstalker News/Rupert Murdoch, North Korea or Iran, who knows? So what bothers me is not that she did it, but that she won't explain WHY she did it. If there's a good reason, then please tell us what it is and you don't even have to say who or what, Hillary, just say SOMETHING.

But the thing that bothers me most is that she's already shown too many "don't do/ban" red flags, forcing things by law, which are just as bad when the left uses them as the right. Like her little interns saying to the press: "Don't use these words when talking about me, press, we're watching you" was a bit disturbing. Um, no, that's a constitutional "no-no", freedom of the press. The press can do and say as they like and you can rebuttle, but you don't ban freedom of speech, that's a warning sign to me. If they say something untrue, then sue them for libel, but don't warn them what they can and cannot say.

And I believe in protecting civil liberties, not promoting them, for either the left or the right. You can't change racism or bigotry by outlawing it, it doesn't work. All that does s push racists and bigots into private, resentment and passive-aggresive racism and bigotry. In fact, after Ferguson and a few Tea Party politicians in charge, waving "I have the right to be a bigot/racist" flags, and look what happened; suddenly you see the closet racists and bigots come out like turning on a light and finding out exactly how many rats have been scurrying around in dark corners the whole time.

But as I've said, they are all flawed message bearers, and if it came down to her and Ted Cruz, it'd be Hillary in a heartbeat for me because I'd do anything to keep a power-hungry communist/fascist-in-the-making out - communism and fascism being two sides of the exact same coin, they're just wearing a different party hat:)

For me, so far, it's looking like Walker or Rubio. - LM

As a socially liberal Republican - have to vote for

[ In Reply To ..]
Hillary. Mostly because she is a woman and I am sick to death of the discrimination against women and the old-fashioned attitudes displayed by the old white guy network of Republicans.

Getting close to social security and I see now how my lower wages through my whole life will now affect my retirement. Through my working career, I always had to pay more for my health insurance because I am a woman. I am sick of the Republican males dictating policy that directly effects me.

Was watching Rand Paul the other day and boy, did he remind me of every male boss I ever had--yelling and being condescending to the female interviewer. Made me sick.

I am concerned Walker is incompetent and I would hate to have him near any foreign policy.

Actually, there are no Republican candidates that I could be proud of. I think Jeb is the least offensive, but after George W., my retirement account never wants to see another Bush in office.

So I will have a glass of wine and vote for Hillary.

lies like Hillary, twists the truth, but mostly outright lies. I would love a woman as President, but I will not vote for her just because she is a woman. That's stupid. There'll be a woman someday, probably in my lifetime, who will be honest and upstanding, and qualified. She just isn't the one.

She's not perfect, but she's still head & shoulders - above anything the Right is running.

I would love to have a candidate that I actually support and feel good about giving my vote to. For the last several elections, I have not cast a vote for a candidate because I truly felt that they were the best person for the job - more like casting a vote against the opposing candidate. I have become so cynical and distrustful of our govt that I do not believe anything any of them say, Republicans or Democrats.

I feel the same way. I think Hillary is about as - Repub-like as a Dem can be, and - sm

it seems like I'd be voting for a Republican if I cast my vote for her. Still.... look at what's coming out of far Right Field, and it's laughable. In this case I have to vote for the lesser of two evils. That's pretty much what voting in America has boiled down to, anyway.
