Looks like democrats have the 60-vote majority!

Posted: Nov 21, 2009

In a show of unity, Senate Democrats sealed a 60-vote majority needed to advance health care legislation Saturday ahead of an evening showdown with Republicans eager to doom the bill and inflict a punishing defeat on President Barack Obama.

Two final holdouts, Sens. Mary Landrieu of Louisiana and Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, announced in speeches a few hours apart on the Senate floor they would vote to clear the way for what is expected to be a bruising, full-scale health care debate after Thanksgiving.

Onward and upward!  Laughing

This is expected..only to further the debate..so that - it can go down in flames later.nm

the bill and tear out all the crap that doesn't belong in it. That's what they have to do in this bill....like, hopeuflly, deleting the part that they are going to reduce $500 billion from Medicare to help pay for this. That, I think, is ridiculous. We all pay this tax and expect to reap benefits from it at age 65, but if they cut those benefits, where will it go?

Why target seniors for this when they paid in for years....for what? A reduction in their benfits I definitely don't agree with this.

Sure wish the wonderful lawmakers would realize that senior citizens don't earn/have what senior lawmakers have, yet they worked their whole lives expecting decent health care in their "golden years" plus, BTW, is turning out to be a nighmare for most of them plus our chilren, grandhilcren, and great-grandhdildren if this healthcare bill passes.

I agree health care needs reform but not the overhaul they are talking abote. Fix what's broke first. THEN, reform the other parts.

'Scue me if I'm replying late, but I've been having terrible "electronic"/internet problems lately.

This is great news! Now we can start to move forward - Colleen

and hopefully get a lot of people some help.

they will get in reverse and go backwards on this baby. This bill will only make matters worse. The only ones who will profit are the insurance companies in the form of increased revenue. Why some people can't see that is beyond me.

Reform, not just public option - NJ

End to yearly and lifetime caps, end to denying insurance for pre-existing conditions, insurance portability. And 1997 pages of other good stuff.

It's not a pro-insurance company bill. At least it won't be if the dems don't let the Republicans gut it.

Higher premiums and taxes for years... with no more help! - Have you really looked at this at all?!!
[ In Reply To ..]
Even if this ridiculous bill passes through everything, it will not "help" anyone for years to come... yet we will all pay more NOW ! What kind of HELP is that? They need to start over. Start by fixing what is wrong instead of creating a whole new problem. I swear, you do not know what you are talking about. You may have good intentions, but this bill is wrong for our country!
Paying more for less - NJ

Have you looked at your health care costs over the past decade? Notice anything about paying more? Because it's been happening. What you have been told about the problem is what has been happening.

I'm not sure how the health care industry has managed to convince you that the highway robbery they have been pulling is what you will get in this bill, but I really wish you stop listening to them.

Look, I work in healthcare. I am not as ignorant as you think. - I TOTALLY agree with gourdpainter below.

This bill is horrible. It wont even take effect for years to come while we pay for it for years with nothing to show for it. How is that better than what we have now? The whole thing is a mess. They need to start over or give up on it! Fix Medicare. Fix SS. Quit trying to cause more chaos with another huge Govt failure.. ridiculous.

I would suggest a thorough reading of the bill....all 2007 pages of it!! The possible "good" things won't even go into effect for a number of years. As near as I can see the very "poor" will not even benefit, they are already receiving free health care as in Medicaid. They are already saying that "premiums MAY rise." Of that we can be CERTAIN. The only thing this bill in it's present form will accomplish is putting health insurance out of reach of more hard working people because those who have insurance are already stretched to the max to afford it. I'm no fan of the Republicans but this is one time I hope they step in and defeat this ridiculous bill because they are at this moment the only hope we have to stop this ridiculous bill. If it passes, in my opinion, the next step will be government will soon take over health care and what do we get? Another freedom down the tubes. THINK people!
Have you ever wondered why the insurance companies - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
are in favor of this bill? Because it will benefit them. This bill will not cover everyone.

This bill needs to be killed and now. They need to start all over. You really don't understand what it's going to do to our economy, our country. You need to stop agreeing for it just because crats are for it. Why don't you read it for yourself.

I'm glad you want to pay for abortions. I don't because I don't believe in it, yet I will have it if it passes. More mammograms will be denied because the government does not believe they are necessary. More woman are going to die of breast cancer. More older people are going to be refused health care because of their age. Maybe your so young and healthy you don't care but I'm in my 50s I CARE!!!!

Stop making this a political party issue. ALL parties (republican, democrat, independent and other parties) need to go back to the drawing board and work together to come up with a better plan. This won't work.

Maybe some congress people can be whored out for a price, but I hope they at least have a conscious and say No to one of the most disastrous tax plans ever created. This bill will worsen the care we receive (rather don't receive), and that won't go into effect for years, but higher taxes will occur immediately.

Maybe get off the "party line" and read the thing for yourself.

I wouldn't be so quick on that - it's not all set that this will pass - Hmmm

Saw this article today. All this vote does is send the bill to the floor for debate (as you stated).

Luckily for America there are a lot of moderate democrats who have said they will not back the bill in its current form. Blanche Lincoln even said she will not vote in favor of the proposal by Reid. Let them talk all they want. I hope they make the right choice for America and stop this bill and not let it go further. I'm hoping and praying that there are enough moderate democrats, independents and republicans who can stop it. However, it does make one a little uncomfortable to know that people like Reid are buying votes to support this bill for a measly little $300 MILLION dollars (and that's just to one person to get their vote). $300 MILLION?????? Sorry, that is just wrong and corrupt.

This is not great for America and the people of the country. Higher premiums, higher taxes, and still millions of people uninsured. Not to mention loss of freedoms, loss of choice, loss of good health care, loss of doctors, and loss of human lives as they will not get the tests, procedures, medications they need as they will have to wait months and months before the government bureaucrats will let them know whether they (who have no experience in health care) decide whether or not someone can get treatment. As a woman in her mid 50s this worries me greatly as I will not have as many "life years" ahead of me that someone in their 20s does, hence, if I ever need treatments, procedure, or medications I will most likely be refused. But hey, for $50. they'll offer me the blue pill.

I just hope and pray in the end Reid's $300 million dollar pay-off/bribe backfires on him (not to mention all the others he is monetarily bribing).

We've been talking about this for months on this board. The talk show pundits have been talking about this for months on TV. Members of Congress have been on many of these TV talk shows talking about it.

Olympia Snowe had everyone on the edge of their seats, wondering if she would vote to let them continue to talk about it. (That "season finale" came and passed.)

Lincoln, Nelson and Landrieu had everyone on the edge of their seats, wondering if they would vote to let them continue to talk about it in a debate. (That "season finale" came and passed.)

And now, after talking about it again, they have officially voted to TALK ABOUT IT EVEN MORE, and as you wrote, there's no guarantee that this bill will even pass.

I realize this is the way the process works, but instead of watching every little move about healthcare, I'm inclined to place it on one of the back burners in my brain. Or perhaps the real indicator is to follow the insurance companies: If they start producing more anti-healthcare reform commercials, then maybe there's a chance it will pass. Either way, this is starting to become boring. Will someone please just tap me on the shoulder when it's all over? I'll be the one who is watching "Ugly Betty" reruns. :-)

How many are seeing a lot of anti-health reform TV ads now? - Colleen

[ In Reply To ..]
I do not know about other areas of the country and I do not know about an increase (mainly because I have not had much time to watch TV in the last week or two) but I know that I was seeing a TON of anti-health reform ads on TV and just chalked it up to the insurance companies getting panicky. Is anyone seeing them increase right now?
Please see message. - Nikki
[ In Reply To ..]
It's hard for me to personally tell, but I actually believe I'm seeing less of them now. The prominent one that comes to mind is the one where they want taxpayers to tell Congress that "this is one bill we can't afford to pay," and I don't remember who was responsible for running the ad.

(In all reality, these ads could be run by the "Citizens for Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice" and could be a front for one of the health insurers. I'm not sure how we'd know that, though I hope it would be publicized if that were to be the case.)

Lately, I don't recall seeing many pro healthcare reform ads. There was the "Harry and Louise" ad, this time in favor of healthcare, sponsored by a trade group representing drug makers and Families USA, a nonprofit group advocating affordable medical care. (There were "Harry and Louise" commercials in the 1990s during the Clinton administration that were against healthcare reform, sponsored by the Health Insurance Association of America.) I haven't seen Harry and Louise in a long time, but like you say, I guess it depends on which part of the country you live.

I'm pretty sure there were more from both sides, say, three to six months ago than there are now. It seems pretty quiet lately. Maybe it's not a good time for the insurance industry because they have all those astronomical bonuses to pay out at the end of the year, and that is taking precedence over paying for TV advertising right now (just a thought).
