US job openings at record high; labor market

Posted: Aug 9, 2017

.S. job openings jumped to a record high in June, outpacing hiring, the latest indication that companies are having trouble finding qualified workers. The Labor Department said on Tuesday that job openings, a measure of labor demand, increased 461,000 to a seasonally adjusted 6.2 million. That was the highest level since the series started in December 2000 and pushed the jobs openings rate up two-tenths of a percentage point to a near one-year high of 4.0 percent. The monthly increase in job openings was the largest since July 2015. Hiring was little changed at 5.4 million in June. That left the hiring rate steady at 3.7 percent. The gap between job openings and hiring points to a skills mismatch.... ;

in nature, being very careful not to assign reason or advantage to Trump.

Second, most of these jobs right now are likely entry level jobs; however, it appears that the table is being set for more higher wage jobs down the road with the recent announcements of several new major facilities being planned, such as Foxconn and auto plants.

Third, I think this is going to speed the development and implementation of technology as there will be a growing dearth of retail, fast food, and truck driving type workers available.

Fourth, I’d rather have these policy issues than that of Obama with increasing food stamps and welfare.

Fifth, the Republican RINOs need to get on board now and produce tax cuts and healthcare reform among other pressing matters.

It's the GOP I have a problem with, not Trump. They seem to be blocking him at every turn. Governments don't grow business, but they can certainly enact regulations that hinder growth and hiring.

I don't find anybody hiding anything Trump - did/does. I find Trump

bragging about things he shouldn't be bragging about though.

Job growth has been going on for several years but we are losing many jobs as well to technology, as I believe you pointed out.

I'm not exactly sure where Obama policies increased food stamps and welfare. As you said, governments don't grow businesses and they also don't decrease jobs. We were in a recession. Companies weren't hiring. Would it be better if those on food stamps and welfare were starving in the streets who lost their jobs during the recession?

I don't like republican policies but again I have to disagree with you on "RINOs needing to get on board." They tried healthcare reform which was a big failure even though Trump praised the win when it passed through the house. They have said they want to move forward for now and work on tax cuts and budget, but Trump wants "Obamacare" repealed before anything else gets done just because he wants to remove anything Obama.

Where has the GOP hindered Trump removing regulations? That is what he has been doing and I for one don't think that is a good thing for us, they only benefit big business while taking away our protections and gutting the environment.

And to add to - what you said -

it just cracks me up that Trump supporters (the few that are left) tout job numbers and Wall Street numbers as being all because of him - BUT, if we point out that nothing he promised is getting done, they screech that it has only been 7 months and how can we expect him to have done much in that little bit of time? The economy has been growing since the big recession. Whether or not you want to give credit to Obama or not - that is what has been happening! People lost their jobs - I was one of them - and needed help to feed their families. Nothing lazy or shameful in that. I still am having problems even getting an interview at basic jobs like in customer service because they are overwhelmed with applications. Anything Trump does won't hit those types of companies for a while, so let's not give credit where it isn't quite due yet!! The regulations he has been meticulously removing have only been to benefit corporations, period. The republicans love to tout that this will help create jobs - I see it as more bonus for the corporate heads!

Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD) Director of Logistics, Energy, Agribusiness and Food Processing Brittany Holtzclaw represented the Global Commerce Division in partnership with the Metro Atlanta Chamber, Georgia Power and Select Fulton.

"What a win it is for the state when an international company chooses Georgia in order to grow their customer base in the U.S.," said GDEcD Commissioner Pat Wilson. "We are excited that ASOS is locating to Union City. Thanks to our pro-business environment, statewide partnerships and top-notch workforce, Georgia is able to support ASOS as they hire our citizens for these newly created positions."

to quickly post some good news for a change.

I wish this was in Cherokee County instead of Fulton. Maybe they decided on this location because it's close to the airport.

That "quality" employers are looking for is - a home address in India.

Carbon Dioxide Emissions At Record High, International GoalDec 02, 2012
Emissions continue to grow so rapidly that an international goal of limiting the ultimate warming of the planet to 3.6 degrees, established three years ago, is on the verge of becoming unattainable, said researchers affiliated with the Global Carbon Project. The new figures show that emissions are falling, slowly, in some of the most advanced countries, including the United States. under a new piece of legislation introduced in the state's House of Representatives, employers would be able to pay anyone under the age of 20 as little as $5.25 an hour for their first 180 days on the job. Oh Dear, These Labor Numbers Are Simply Awful.Sep 07, 2012
- is that Obama had these numbers when he stood up and made his speech last night.  The POTUS is always advised of the numbers on the day before any significant labor (or other economic) numbers are released.
