Well, since it's very quiet on the forum today, I thought I'd post something I initially read on Friday on paper in the WSJ, but I couldn't find the exact article online, so I posted the same story from my other favorite, the Washington Post: Pope Francis and the vatican announced a treaty that recognized the Palestinian state, and he also conferred two 17th century Palestinian nuns for canonization.
Even if you're not Catholic or you don't agree with him, ya gotta love this guy, he's a game changer - he's confused both the right AND left:)
Now, left-leaners who believe in separation of church and state are confused, to include the White House. They want to cheer on his actions, but realize doing so would be recognizing the power of the church's influence in politics and have encouraged him to "let the political negotiations complete." In fact, the White House has issued that statement as response.
Right-leaners, Israel and fundamentalist Christians are confused because they can't smear HIM a muslim-terrorist lover or antisemite because he's the leader of the largest Christian church in the world, 50% based in Judaism. So, of course, they also encouraged him to stay out of politics, too, or condemned him as "taking sides."
What do I think?
I think private churches have the right to take political stances any way they please, but financially contributing to national politicians to affect political outcome would be another story.
I think this man actually read the whole bible and paid attention to what it said about God's provision for both Israel and Palestine in Genesis. I think despite Israel whining about it, few of them belong to his church, but many Palestinians actually do, so it's not choosing them OVER Israel, it's recognizing the members of his own church.
I think Pope Francis is turning over tables in the temple and doing exactly WWJD, I love him for it. And I'm not Catholic!
