I'm not religious and have many grievances - with the church, BUT

I love the pope election process--the smoke, the secrecy. It's very old world, and I can't help but get caught up in it.

Me too. And with over a billion Catholics, it throws - a lot of weight around. I'm old enough

to look back at Vatican II, which I thought then had nothing to do with me, and then the swing back to conservatism and realize that it really does affect my world.

Same here. nm - Dewey

Dennis: You'll know.

Wow! Quick choice of an Argentinian Jesuit progressive - who criticizes economic injustice, believes

in social justice, is described as nevertheless orthodox and potentially conservative, lives in a little apartment and takes a bus to work. At least did. Pope Francis I.

Too bad he is anti-contraception - and anti-gay,

[ In Reply To ..]
But it's the pope, so not exactly a shocker.

No, but supposedly he's very deeply spiritual, - and that's what I would have chosen

[ In Reply To ..]
for a giant religion that is not mine. This secularized easy-sell/mass market version we see in American Protestant megachurches, for instance, might be easily adulterated further, but I suspect it's far from optimal for anyone on any side for just that reason.

The political/future of the Church battle was supposed to be between a more marketable planetwide religion and a return to core values. He may be an attempt to have both, with the compromise being a traditional acceptance that God decides women's and men's roles, not them.

In any case, as a good liberal, I liked that he called for silent, private prayer after being presented. The people in the square and around the planet were to commune one-on-one for themselves instead of passively riding on his words in some giant dutiful group thing. May not mean anything I read into it, but I like it. :)
*wondering if there has been a pope who - was not deeply spiritual*
[ In Reply To ..]
It seems like a basic requirement for the holy father. Maybe there have been popes who weren't deeply spiritual, I don't know. But if there have been, I'd call that a flaw in the system.
There are different levels and definitions of - spirituality
[ In Reply To ..]
I think the poster eloquently described what level/definition of spirituality she was impressed with.

But yeah... spirituality is definitely the prerequisite!! :-)
Boy, are there! Probably the #1 source of hypocrisy. - Let's not forget, BTW, that ALL of those
[ In Reply To ..]
cardinals in some way or another, most probably extensively and continually over the decades, have been involved in concealing, and thus abetting, abuses of all kinds of parishioners of all ages and both sexes, not just children and not just rape. This is a top-down religion and all 200+ cardinals take their orders from Rome, which as we all know are to protect The Church first.

Also, please note that all positions of religious authority, right from the bottom up, draw not only those who want to serve God but those who want a position of authority from which to prey on the flock of potential victims it provides. Keeping those monsters out is a problem for all religions.
Whereas I think we can assume MANY have been. - Popes are extremely powerful men. nm

OTOH, he's lived a very healthy life otherwise and could be around for another 30 years...

Lunch With The PopeFeb 14, 2017
President Trump invited the Pope for lunch on his yacht, the Pope accepted and during lunch, a puff of wind blew the Pontiff's hat off, into the water. It floated off about 50 feet, then the wind died down and it just floated in place. The crew and the secret service were scrambling to launch a boat to go get it, when Trump waved them off, saying "Never mind, boys, I'll get it." The Donald climbed over the side of the yacht, walked on the water to the hat, picked it up, walke ...

The Pope And Politics: Should He Or Shouldn't He?May 18, 2015
Well, since it's very quiet on the forum today, I thought I'd post something I initially read on Friday on paper in the WSJ, but I couldn't find the exact article online, so I posted the same story from my other favorite, the Washington Post:  Pope Francis and the vatican announced a treaty that recognized the Palestinian state, and he also conferred two 17th century Palestinian nuns for canonization. Even if you're not Catholic or you don't agree with him, ya gott ...

Pope/Trump VisitMay 24, 2017
Trump said he "won't forget what" the Pope said to him in their private meeting. And the Vatican put out a nice statement after their meeting saying the two leaders talked about "the promotion of peace in the world through political negotiation and interreligious dialogue" I hope world peace is what he won't forget. I hope that he will stop the incessant attacks and bombing by the U.S. In other news, Trump seems to have taken back that NATO is "obsolete" with a simple statement ...

Pope canonizes 2 Palestinian nuns and calls Mahmoud Abbas an "angel of peace." Really good to see the Pope furthering peace in the Middle East. Two state solution is the only possible peaceful solution. Perhaps this will further negotiations. If a reasonable approach, such as this type of recognition, had been taken with the Palestinian state situation, this issue might have been resolved by now. http://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/pope-calls-palestinian-leader-mahmoud-abbas-ange ...

I Am Glad Pope Francis Is Such A WidelySep 26, 2015
As the leader of the Roman Catholic religion he obviously has a great following and his thoughts mean "the world" to many, many people. I am glad for his ability to speak about humanity and the subjects that so desperately need to be illustrated and explained to so many in the United States. The "so many" in the United States seem to be predominantly conservatives, but not exclusively. There is plenty of corporate greed and corruption in both parties, and he spoke to the evil in that also. ...
