Has anyone ever done the go fund me thing

I am trying it, desperate for any help I can get to be able to move from a recent domestic abuse situation. I need to go 2 hours away to get out of this very bad, very small town where he knows everybody. No family, no friends here for me, I'm on my own.

I'm asking the local women's shelter, as well as shelters and churches in the area where I want to go. This is a very small, poor town and I doubt there are much resources here, but I'm looking everywhere.

I'm an MT, so at least I have a job and can move wherever I need to go.

I know there has to be a bank somewhere to receive the donations, but I'm a bit wary of providing my banking information anywhere to anyone, so I wanted to see if anyone else had any experiences good or bad with that site and any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I started on for a colleague who was in dire straights and you'd have thought I was collecting funds for a felon. The blow back of nasty cruel comments blew me completely away. "How dare you" "who do you think you are asking for money" "only sick people should be on gofundme" and on and on and on.

To them, I say - WTH do YOU think you are tell me when I can do something? Such nerve. You know they have been cozy enough to not consider the plight of a sole person who is unable to run to a family bank account or sofa after no income and destitution.

I've seen people make a GoFundMe page to finance a trip to Europe.. Crazy stuff. I started a page in the summer to raise money for my friend who was diagnosed with Stage IV small cell lung cancer and who lost her job due to not being able to return to work after her FMLA was up. My goal was $11,000, which we haven't raised, but we did raise $5300 for her medical expenses, which was amazing. The thing with GoFundMe is that the people who donate are NOT random people just looking for something to donate to.. They are your friends and email and Facebook contacts and their contacts. You have to do updates all the time, and GoFundMe takes a small % of each donation (I think 5%). Good luck to you!

the outrage against the idea of helping 2 others (who were in need to traveling back to their home in another state and trapped in strange town without resources)as older single sisters. One was chronically ill and stress can impact any patient in a compromised condition. It was a shock really. I expect people to just move on and forget about it, if they disagree, not state with a venomous response and lead to the idea being so tainted, no one wants to even consider it. Mean to the bone.

I tried it. I found that unless you can come up with a huge Facebook response from people you know you get no donations. Very disappointing.

http://www.thehotline.org/ This is the National Domestic abuse website which will speak to you 24/7 and give you housing options and provide local referrals. Also the United way 211 will help. With these resources you will not have to rely on your own funds at the moment or do a go fund me. As well, you will be provided a safe way to get out, advice on how to do it, and counseling for a lifetime. Believe me they are there to help and they will refer you to local help as well.
