Sarah Palin's Hunting Trip to Feed her Family cost $42,400 or $141.33 per lb. of Caribou

Posted: Dec 7, 2010

When Sarah Palin took us on a hunting/camping trip with her dad Chuck Heath on the latest episode of Sarah Palin's Alaska, she said hunting was necessary to "fill her freezer!"  Hunting for caribou means “food on the table and in the freezer for a lot of Alaskans,” the former Govenor extolled. She opened her freezer to let us see how the Palin meat pantry was getting bare.

“For many people in remote areas of Alaska, there’s no grocery store nearby, we just got to get out and hunt,” enthused Sarah. The only thing is that getting out and hunting for Sarah turned out to be an adventure requiring three separate airplanes to get her to her hunting spot with her father and family friend Steve Becker.

Hollywoodlife.com researched the logistics and cost of Palin’s hunting trip which resulted in a bagged caribou, and discovered that it was a mighty expensive way to feed the Palin family, at $42,400 for the trip.

The grand total to charter a Dehavilland Dash plane from Era Alaska to travel round trip from Wasilla’s Palmer airport to Deadhorse, Alaska was $37,600. In Deadhorse, the Palins switched to a 6 seat Cessna C207 Skywagon which they flew into the Kavik River Camp, at $1200 for the round trip, according to Lori Goodman, director of sales and marketing of Era Alaska, the company which chartered the planes for the Palins.

Once in Kavik, the Palins spent two nights at the Kavik River Camp at $250 a person per night, for a $750 total.

Finally, the Deltana Outfitters flew them individually on a Piper Supercub airplane from Kavik into their hunting spot at a cost of $350 per hour for three hours each way, for a total of $2100, according to Deltana.

The grand Palin total to bag a caribou and get it back to the Palin homestead added up to $42,400, or $141.33 per lb. of caribou meat. Sarah shot and killed a female cow which may have weighed up to 300 lbs.

Just to put this is perspective, the Palins could have filled their freezer with ribeye steak at $10.99 a lb. from Alaska’s Mr. Prime Beef, which is based in Anchorage and ships anywhere in the state.

I have no problem with hunting as a hobby and eating what you catch. But when Sarah goes on about being “tough, independent and self sufficent” and that’s why she hunts, she can't be serious. How many Americans can afford to be that “self sufficent” and “self sustaining” when it costs $42,400 to personally hunt for their meat?

It’s a nice fantasy Sarah — but that’s what you’re really selling on your reality show.

Who cares - thought you said she was not a pollitician - Gab board???

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't care about SP and her hunting trips or moose or bear kills or anything that she does. You yourself she said was not a politician, so why are you putting info about a reality type show here. I would think the Gab board is more the speed for reality shows.

We might wish she would go away - but she is going to be around awhile

We discuss many people who are not politicians on this forum. - Palintology

Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Keith Olbermann, Joe Scarborough, past presidents, past senators, etc. Palin was a politician in the past and aspires to be one again in the future. That makes her worthy of discussion on this forum. Very simple concept, if you ask me.

You are correct that the people you listed are not - Backwards Typist

politicians but their message and talk shows are all political. Palin's show is not a talk show or a political show; therefore, it should not be on a political board. If she would discuss politics on her show, then it would belong here.

Very simple concept, don't you agree?
She was a vice president candidate - and now likes to tease @ presidency

That does not qualify?
Looking at other sites - that collect

news articles, etc., anything about SP is always always always listed under politics. Maybe it's because she is the tea party darling and has strong political views which she does not hesitate to voice. Maybe it's because she had run for vice president in the 2008 election and has announced the possibility she will be a candidate in the 2012 election.

All other websites with a delineation I've seen, list her under politics.
Palin's show IS a political show - no1joe

and people need to realize that. I think the OP is being misunderstood in the post below when they said that SP is not a politician. She most certainly is, just not actively serving in office, and every public move she makes is carefully calculated. Now, I'm neither a republican nor a democrat. I'm the swing vote here... the type of nameless face or a number candidates try to win over, so maybe it's a little easier for someone with this perspective to see this for what it's worth. This reality show is an early campaign. She already has her fan base out there who would elect her no matter what, and what better way to win the hearts of the public she's targeting than to enter their living rooms once a week so people get to know her like family? Whether or not I'm a Palin fan, I have to admit that the idea is genius! She's obviously going after the "heart of America" as well as the second amendment vote, and one of the hurdles there would be to prove the fact that she's a "tough cookie" and not just another skirt trying to do a man's job (yes, people DO still think that way). Not to mention the fact that while SP the Reality Star is gaining public popularity for SP the Politician, she's earning a paycheck for her too! It's brilliant! (BTW, I have no clue whether she's donating all earnings from her show to some cause, and if she is, I do apologize). Think of all that early handshaking and baby kissing she's getting out of the way without even having to leave her home state. Even better... she's doing all that without the risk of having to answer potential questions on important topics, giving speeches, or saying something goofy or something that might be misconstrued or twisted by PC thugs to make her look bad... all of that, if it exists, is being carefully cut and left on the editing room floor. It's win-win for SP with this gig whehter she decides to run for political office herself or endorse someone else, and even though I'm slightly insulted because I feel like someone out there is doubting my intelligence, I still have to give a hats-off to the folks who came up with this idea.

Now, I could be wrong, but I think the original post was placed due to the hypocrisy some may see by someone trying who is trying to come across as a hard-working American living off the land but yet spending THOUSANDS of dollars in the process! I don't know about you, but I get slightly peeved when someone assumes I'm gullible. I think the OP might feel the same way.

Think about this: What if Hillary decided to pack up and move back to Arkansas and became the star of the "Hillary's Country Livin'" reality show? Wouldn't you think something was up? (BTW... I think watching paint dry would be more entertaining). Don't get caught up in the game here folks. Just sayin'.

And, as always, forgive any typos... it's too early to spellcheck.
Hillary's Country Livin--LOL - Stress, menopause, and Bill take their toll.

Glad I could help you rest your weary bones.  Consider it my lullaby to you.  Cool

That what's great about American. We can - spend our money hunting

[ In Reply To ..]
if we want. My spouse hunts all of the time, and it can be quite expensive. There are A LOT of people who pay to go on very, very expensive hunting trips.

I doubt this applies to Sarah Palin, but there are people now who enjoy eating meat but refuse to eat meat bought in the store due to the steroids and additives. I know some who drive someway to the Amish to buy fresh meat as they do not hunt. It is about $9 dollars a pound for the meat not to mention over an hour away.

I'm sure you realize all meat tastes quite different, especially wild meat. Maybe they like the taste. Who knows? Why do you care? Would you rather her go on lavish shopping trips like a lot of the reality shows?

Hey, as long as she putting some of those hard earned tax breaks - back into the economy

[ In Reply To ..]
I would rather see her donate some time to a soup kitchen, though. Maybe next episode.

Okay if we are turning the political board into a gab board - I will offer my 2 cents

[ In Reply To ..]
I say good for Sarah Palin. I'm glad she has a reality show and I'm glad she's making a lot of money from it, and it's nice that people can get a glimpse of Alaska and what her life is like. I haven't seen it myself, but I hear its pretty successful so far. Some people don't realize how expensive everything is there. My friend took a vacation there and said she went to a McDonalds and got a cheeseburger, fry and coke and it cost her over $12. Milk is $7 a gallon. The cost of living there is just very expensive, so those prices you quoted doesn't surprise me at all and is very reasonable. The river Camp. That is quite low to what some places cost. But all in all the cost that Hollywoodlife quoted seems pretty reasonable.

You also need to realize that the Palins do not do their shopping at the local food shelter for the poor. They have a good life. They are fisherman and hunters and that is how they get their food. They don't have food delivered by some company. They are most likely very health conscious and want to know exactly where there food comes from. There are many people who do.

I do know for sure if I got stranded in Alaska Sarah Palin and her family are the first people I would want to be friends with. She has a beautiful family, cutie pie for a husband and her children are cute as a button. I loved watching the little girl. And Bristol...she sure can dance and her cute little figure. She was a lot of fun to watch and I'm absolutely thrilled she made it as far as she did.

Yes, Sarah and her family is tough, independent and self sufficient. A lot of people who live in the wilderness are. And since she can afford how she gets her food I'd say it's nobody's business how or where they get their food.

I find it truly pathetic that people have to pick at every little thing she does. God knows if she farts at the wrong time it will be posted here. Sorry I don't live such a miserable life that I wish death and destruction on anyone no matter what political party they belong to.

Thanks for your post...it has inspired me to watch her reality show. I had no interest before, but reading how much it urks some people I will be watching.

How shallow can a person be? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you really pick your friends by how "cute" they are? Personally, I prefer well-educated, well-spoken friends with a good heart and good sense of humor.

You didn't get the message I see... - I will offer my 2 cents

[ In Reply To ..]
1. This is not a political discussion.

2. Sarah and her family know how to survive in the wilderness. They know how to hunt and fish. Those are the kind of people I want to be around if I need to survive. First, SP is an intelligent women, however, if I'm out in the wilderness and I'm hungry and cold and looking for shelter I'll take someone who knows how to survive over your "well-spoken friends" who don't know how to survive any day. Besides SP is well educated and well spoken and she has a good heart and great sense of humor, so I've got both bases covered if I get stranded in the wilderness with them.

3. Since the post to begin with was juvenille I brought my message to that level. I guess you didn't read all the messages below of how innocent children are "fair game" and the absolute hate spewed forth in many posts, yes I brought the message to a level they would understand.
Oh, I got the message all right. - sm

Video link is Sarah shooting a caribou. The ex-gov shows off her hunting talent by shooting at a caribou six? (I lost count) times before hitting it, while her father has to work the bolt action for her. They prop up the gun so she can finally shoot it. Hmmmm, the mighty hunter! Keep in mind that this is AFTER editing!! Watching the caribou, I have to wonder if it was a farm-raised or a drugged animal. I have not seen a caribou up close and personal, but deer run like hell.

I guess I would not depend on her to save me from a bear. - LOL! Would have to ask the bear to please wait. n
