Is Sarah Palin's Newsweek Cover Sexist

Posted: Nov 18, 2009

This is a rush transcript from "Hannity," November 17, 2009. This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated.

HANNITY: Not only that, but Runner's World shot the image featured by Newsweek and used it for a specific purpose to feature well-known runners and promote health and fitness among its readers. Now the magazine is now going out of its way to make clear that it did not provide Newsweek with this image.

And in an editorial note, Runner's World writes, quote, "Runner's World did not provide Newsweek with the image. Instead, it was provided to Newsweek by the photographer's stock agency without Runner's World knowledge or permission."

So I wonder if it's standard practice for Newsweek to swipe images that have appeared on other magazines or if they only do that when they think it will make Governor Palin look bad.

Joining me with reaction to all of this is former White House press secretary Dana Perino and from the Fox Business Network Stuart Varney. ...................

SEAN HANNITY, HOST: Governor Sarah Palin is making waves this week and that's probably why she landed on the cover of Newsweek magazine, but now that magazine cover itself is stirring up controversy. Some are calling it sexist for the way that it depicts Palin. And take a look at the governor's reaction.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BARBARA WALTERS, ABC NEWS: Have you seen the cover of Newsweek? It's a picture of you in shorts from a photograph that was taken for a Runner's World magazine. So how do you feel about they're showing you like that on the cover?

SARAH PALIN, FORMER VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I think that it's so cheesy. Had I known then that a picture of me in shorts would end up on the cover of Newsweek I would not have allowed Runner's World to profile me.

I think that that — for me, personally, it's a wee bit degrading. Newsweek should be more — more policy oriented, more substance oriented than showing some gal in shorts on the cover.

;

I don't understand why they lifted a photo from Runner's World? - Sheeples

[ In Reply To ..]
Why didn't they do their own cover? To me, that speaks volumes. I'm going to go a-Googlin' and see if they have done this for any other cover before...lift a photo from another magazine.

I am with you. Why would they do that? I can - guess..and it aint good

[ In Reply To ..]
Newsweek =pigs

Why wouldn't they? - She had to know

[ In Reply To ..]
it would be fair game when she had it made. She's a big girl. If the headlines said Sarah Palin on Fitness or something, she would be fine with it.
So? They could have taken their own photo, instead - they choose another in shorts.. dumb.nm
[ In Reply To ..]
Just admit to yourself this was dumb..and they would only do this to a woman.
I agree - only to a woman - because
[ In Reply To ..]
no man would pose like this, and no woman in Palin's position with any sense would either. They could have taken another picture, but again, why would they?
SHE DID NOT POSE FOR NEWSWEEK THIS WAY - FOR "RUNNERS WORLD"-appropriate!
[ In Reply To ..]
geez. Why dont we all be more obsessed with what Obama is doing to this country than with Palin's shorts?
So, why are you obsessed with her legs? - They are just legs.
[ In Reply To ..]
Everyone has legs. She didn't have to pose in a "look at my legs" position for Runner's World.
Oh, nice try at turning that around.. LOL ! - not working, honey
[ In Reply To ..]
I am, however, obsessed about the bad direction our country is headed. Hopefully, intelligence will prevail in the end, meaning someone who has it -since that is not Obama.
Better spend your time defending someone who has some - then
[ In Reply To ..]
darling :)
Why are you? - hmmm
[ In Reply To ..]
A "look at my legs position"???????? Are you kidding? She's wearing shorts for crying out loud.

Every single issue of Runner's world has somebody wearing shorts.

People wear running shorts all the time. Especially when they run (hence the name "running shorts").

Take a look at all of these issues.

Shorts!!!!! For pete's sake. Nobody "poses in a look at my legs position". This was not playboy, this was Runner's World and she was appropriately dressed for someone who was going running or being interviewed for being physically fit. Your comment was a ridiculous and insane comment "she's in a look at my legs pose". Geez....that's about as insane as the one who said her legs were fat. Grow up people.
Well, it appears to be near to a position that - she used for the
[ In Reply To ..]
bathing suit competition to me. Look at her knee and her feet.

Anyway, all I'm saying is, they are just legs. Newsweek wasn't doing a favorable article on her and I'm sure they knew she wouldn't appreciate the shorts picture. But why is she playing the sexist card?

I would agree that it doesn't fit the context, but more appropriate and fitting images come to mind that could have been far more embarrassing to her.

Personally, I believe that one leg is just like another leg be it a man's or a woman's. If this had been a picture of a man in his running shorts, would it be perceived as sexist? I think not. If there were not people who perceive women in this way, and women who use this perception for whatever reason they may have, this would not be a problem.

So, obsession? Me? Hardly. It's just a pair of shorts. Hmmm, where have we heard that before?

There's nothing sexist about this - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
She's in running/bicycle shorts and a shirt. Her zipper on her shirt is not down low so any cleavage showing. Lots of people wear running shorts all the time. Nothing sexist about it.

It's a great pic of her. I'm proud of all she has accomplished and what she has been through and how she is able to just keep going. She's a strikingly beautiful woman and I'm glad her pic made it to the cover. Beats the alternative.

I agree. I don't like her but this is right up there - Colleen

[ In Reply To ..]
the hoopla over President Obama bowing-a really silly waste of time and not worth discussing. IMO, this is not sexist. It is an attractive woman in shorts.

progressive says yes - StanleyAnn

[ In Reply To ..]
It is a sexist cover. Rather surprised a respected national publication would stoop to such tactics.

Palin - Claudia

[ In Reply To ..]
I would never, ever (and knew this from the get-go), seriously consider someone such as Palin for ANY office. SNL and now this!? I never watch SNL but have heard her involvement in an episode. What a way to "try" to catch some votes. Pulling out early from a governership does not portend for an ideal candidate for the U.S. presidency.

Her legs are fat, anyway. But with me at 109 pounds, I guess that's no surprise.

Fat? How nice of you. As far as voting for someone - I WOULD NEVER VOTE FOR OBAMA

[ In Reply To ..]
So glad I did not. However, I am sad for our country. There he is today talking out of both sides of his mouth, stating we may need another stimulus, yet we can't keep spending money to get out of a recession, and that we may be headed back into one. Obama is a mess.

You think her legs are fat?????????? - just me

[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe you should talk to a counselor at an eating disorder clinic. Gov. Palin is no way near "fat". Her legs are slender, as is her body, and they look great. If so I wish I had her "fat" legs. Maybe you think your perfect at 109 pounds. But I guarantee you anyone one with sense and more than a pea brain does not think her legs are "fat".

BTW - do you always make fun of people for attributes that are not their fault. I'll bet you laugh at people who wear glasses, or laugh at people with large facial features, hey what about scars or signs of physical abuse, bet you think that's real funny.

Her legs are "fat"????? Time to grow up.

Hate her for her policies, but not for the way she looks.

Agree. She made a ridiculous comment. - Independent

Sexist - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm undecided about the magazine cover, but your comment was sexist. And yes, even women can be sexist.

Fat legs. Sheesh.

NJ

Just a note about the mag. - Hmmm

[ In Reply To ..]
It wasn't the pic of Sarah that was sexist...it was the title of the article.

"How do we stop a problem like Sarah". Undoubtedly from the song "How do we stop a problem like Maria" (Sound of Music). What would you (not you personally, anyone) have thought if it was a pic of Obama in his swim trunks and the title of the article said "How do we stop a problem like Obama". I don't think too many people would find that funny. I think the title of the article is sexist, not the pic.

Sexist or not.....(sm) - Just the big bad

[ In Reply To ..]
I would think a good rule of thumb for people who don't want this kind of image distributed (especially when they have a high profile) would be to not allow this kind of image to be taken in the first place.

I personally don't think this is any worse than the pic of Obama on the beach. It at least shows something positive in that she is physically fit...and good for her!
