Rush Limbaugh says First Lady is no swimsuit model

Posted: Feb 22, 2011

By Rachel Rose Hartman rachel Rose Hartman
Radio host Rush Limbaugh poked fun at Michelle Obama's waistline Monday; the latest entry in a string of conservative attacks on the First Lady's anti-obesity campaign.
During his show yesterday, Limbaugh pounced on a report that the Obama family (minus the president) had dined on ribs while vacationing in Vail, Colo.:

The problem is -- and dare I say this -- it doesn't look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice. And then we hear that she's out eating ribs at 1,500 calories a serving with 141 grams of fat per serving, yeah it does -- what do you mean, what do I mean?

What is it - no, I'm trying to say that our First Lady does not project the image of women that you might see on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, or of a woman [professional baseball player] Alex Rodriguez might date every six months or what have you. I mean, women are under constant pressure to look lithe, and Michelle My Belle is out there saying if you eat the roots and tree bark and the berries and all this cardboard stuff you will live longer, be healthier and you won't be obese. Okay, fine, show us.

As my good friend says: "Let's see......she's black, she's pretty, she's smart, she's educated, she's successful, she's professional, ...she has good teeth......that's a perfect storm for the Tea Party. She could advocate for apple pie and they'd disagree."

what is the fascination - indemt

[ In Reply To ..]
that you have with labeling anyone who criticizes Obama? She's black. Yeah, so what does that have to do with anything and why are you so obsessed with bringing it up?

All we heard about the Tea Party rallies were how white they were. Well, I'll be honest here, these Wisconsin rallies seem pretty white to me and no one is pointing that out. Stop with the black/white angle. It's old and doesn't work. People have seen right through that a long time ago.

Looks like the meaning of this context went right over your head. - sm

of braised ancho chile lean cut short ribs (5 ounces as recommended by nutritionists) along with pickled pumpkin salad with arugula, wild mushrooms stuffed with hominy and sauteed kale (a superfood) grown at the school across from the restaurant.  She has always said that fighting obesity in all about balance.  That meal looks pretty balanced to me.

Maybe Lush was estimating 1500 calories and 141 grams of fat based on his own typical rib feast.  As far as the swim suit crack is concerned, just trying to imagine him in a speedo gives me a migraine.

After all, which one has the most credibility when it comes to promoting healthy lifestyles?

Okay... I listened to the sound clip, and my jaw is hanging open.

This is outrageous on so many levels. First of all, I am someone who has had to deal with weight control issues my entire life, at some points in my life being FAT. News flash, Rush: YOU ARE FAT! Like me, you have lost weight (ahem... and regained it) and know all about the battle of the bulge. So let me start by saying that trying to pick on someone about their weight is hypocritical (and mean-spirited IMO... remember where you came from).

Okay... so the First Lady isn't promoting binge fad dieting along with prescription pills (like the route you chose... go figure) and instead promotes exercise and eating healthy which includes eating in moderation. Is this really a bad thing? How could you not support someone publicly addressing the obesity issue in this country seeing as how you (and I and many others) have had to watch an expanding waistline? How could you not support ending obesity to save MONEY since it is one of the major contributors to disease (i.e., heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, all those fun diabetic-related illnesses, etc.) and could ultimately lead to disability? Wait... I know. This was just too good of an opportunity to perpetuate a racial sterotype. In case you don't think that's what he's doing here... go listen to the clip.

And, oh yes... thank you for reminding us all that the epitome of the female form is the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model instead of a First Lady promoting healthy living and a figure to match. A real move in the right direction. Now, keeping in mind that on the flip side of that for men is the "lift things up and put dem down" dude on the Planet Fitness commercials, it looks like you boys (including you) need to hit the gym. Get to it... you won't be missed.

Seriously... please stop listening to this guy. He really doesn't have anything good to say.

Perfect post. Makes me wanna take a power walk. - Dont forget his Twinkie diet

[ In Reply To ..]
You just about said it all: Hypocrisy, the fad diet he went on that landed him in the hospital with chest pains, the rapid reappearance of those 90 lost pounds, the laundry list of obesity-related medical problems that translate to increased health care costs, the racial stereotype (which I picked up on right away) and SI swim suit issue sexism. Yep. He has outdone himself. This is over the top, even for Rush.

Yep, it was pretty rude... - Katie

[ In Reply To ..]
the things he said, but.....you can't ignore some of the facts. Ms. Obama is going to have to keep an eye on her weight or she's going to look hypocritical. You can't promote a healthy diet and eat ribs and ice cream. There is no such thing as the "occasional" treat with most people and those of us who find it easy to pack on the pounds have to be more vigilant. Yes, I agree...she is a beautiful first lady but she looks like she could get quite a spread in the back forty if she's not careful. The US is one of the fattest and unhealthiest countries there is. Beans, rice, fruits and veggies with a few nuts thrown in will keep that weight off. Been there....done that. Rush and Ms. Obama need to figure that out.
Shes GOING to look hypocritical if she doesnt watch her weight? - Are you kidding me?
[ In Reply To ..]
Some nutrition facts about braised beef short ribs. 80 calories and 5 grams of fat per ounce x5 ounces equals 400 calories and 25 grams of fat. Mushrooms have 15 calories and 0 grams of fat per CUP and are loaded with nutrients. Hominy has 60 calories and 0.5 grams of fat per 1/2 cup and is a good source of fiber. Kale by the cup is 36 calories with 1 gram of fat and is even more loaded with nutrients than mushrooms. Sauteed? My guess is she chooses olive oil for its health benefits (antioxidents, lowers LDL and raises HDL). Two teaspoons have 80 calories and 10 grams of "good" fat.

Moderate downhill snow skiing (which she had been doing that day) burns around 500 calories per hour. You do the math. It is likely she burned up many more calories before she ever sat down to her 600 calories. I cant understand what more you could expect, but this looks like she is watching her weight closely and knows exactly what she is doing.

I lost 65 pounds in 9 months recently. I ate a barbecue short ribs, sweet potatoes and green beans meal at least twice a month (a favorite of mine. I consumed a diet dessert 3 days per week (chocolate mousse) and every 4 weeks I allowed myself a day without diet where I ate absolutely anything I wanted in uncontrolled amounts. This day would typically be started with a Cinnabon and more often than not included a fried food entree and mashed potatoes. I rode my bike 30-40 minutes per day 3 days weekly, walked on the other days and did muscle toning exercises on the days I walked.

Moderation. Balance. Consistency. Occasional treats. Patience. Sound familiar? It sure worked for me. Looks like it works well for her too.
Short ribs...not health food no matter what angle you spin it - Katie
[ In Reply To ..]
Eating that way can help you lose weight but most people can't keep it up for the long haul. It's better to eat healthy all the time, not just for weight loss but to health prevent disease. Consistency is the real trick and you can't be consistent eating what you like, even in moderation. One Cinnabon leads to 2 and 3, etc. That sounds more familiar to me. That only works if you keep it up and most people can't.
No spin needed when faced with nutritional facts. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Which are available to those whose minds are open to educational information. If you are into healthy eating for the long haul, you are much MORE likely to succeed if you allow yourself a reward every now and then. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that an occasional fall off the wagon is not fatal when BALANCED out with a slight increase in exercise for a day or two. If I had let one Cinnabon lead to two or three, the reward factor would have been lost. I used that as a motivating factor to sustain controlled portions and healthy balanced eating patterns. It was something to look forward to and made great strives to EARN that one day off.

I agree with what you said. This is more about health than weight control. But it is ALWAYS about mind over matter and commitment to a healthy lifestyle. I wouldnt return to my former eating habits for any amount of money. I feel better than I have in years and am full of energy. Cholesterol stays low, blood work looks great and except for a bit of MT-induced DDD, I have a clean bill of health at 62.

I think what Michelle Obama does on behalf of children's obesity is a wonderful initiative. She lives by example, and puts out valuable information we all could benefit from, and I cannot BELIEVE there are those who try to make this a partisan battle by criticizing and belittling her efforts.
I think her effort is wonderful... - Katie
[ In Reply To ..]
and never said it wasn't. I just happen to know how hard it is to keep weight off until I figured it out 20 years ago. It's not the occasional Cinnabon but I said "most of us" can't have an occasional treat. It turns into a regular treat. I feel great also at age 58 with no health problems, not even arthritis. I take no medications and I have read research that has found dairy to be the cause of most of our bone-related problems and not really age-related or anything else. Seems to be working for me. ;)

You guys crack me up....seriously - sm

Michelle Obama is no model. Models today are stick thin with no shape. Michelle Obama certainly does NOT fit into that category as she definitely has a booty.

Michelle can preach about healthy eating all she wants as long as government stays out of my personal life. If I wanna buy a twinkie, I have the right to buy a twinkie. I shouldn't be taxed more for that twinkie. If I wanna indulge myself with a soda, I have the right to drink one and I shouldn't be taxed more for it.

What next? Will they wanna put a tax on video games because kids play those more than playing outside and that makes 'em fat?

Too much government intrusion in our daily lives and I will NOT stand for it. I'm tired of it. This is my life...BUTT OUT! If I wanna take my kid to McDonald's once a month for a Happy Meal as a treat...that is my right...so get off of my back.

I agree... - Katie

[ In Reply To ..]
A model Ms. Obama is not. I agree...the government has no right to tell you what to eat or drink, as long as they (or, especially, we the taxpayers) don't have to foot the bill for your health insurance and disease care. I agree... we have the right to take our kids to McDonald's and make them as sick and as fat as we are. Anyone who takes their kids to McDonald's for "treats" more than likely feeds their kids the same kind of "treats" at home. Just from what I see. But, that is your right.

FYI - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I cook my children well balanced meals. None of us have a weight problem. I limit their video games yet they are allowed to play them. McDonald's is a once a month treat if they do their chores, etc. The taxpayers do not pay for our health insurance. So until you know MY personal story, you might wanna keep your mouth shut.

and I didn't assume. I was stating facts based on what I've seen and people I know so I DO have a clue as to what I'm talking about. I didn't say you didn't have the right to eat at McDonalds' or be as unhealthy as you (meaning anyone, not specifically YOU) want as long as my tax dollars don't have to go to pay for your insulin and bariatric surgeries, etc. simply because you have the right to be as sickly as you want. I'm tired of that and if you are not in this category of people then why get bent out of shape?? Seems a tad fishy to me.
What I read what you posted to her, I thought was - extremely rude
[ In Reply To ..]
I think you kind of made it personal when she said that she took her kids to McDonalds once a month as a treat, and then you let her know what you thought about parents taking their kids to McDonald's as a treat. I think that is why she is bent out of shape.

I know we are an athletic family, and we have fast food sometimes too. That doesn't mean we are lining up for bariatric surgery or insulin. I am very sorry that you are someone who has not been fortunate enough to be able to have a meal that contains fat in it on the rare occasion without becoming an overindulger, but there are some of us who are able to on occasion and still be healthy and stay trim and fit.
You can't get "personal" - Katie

My guess is you have no problem with tax on alcohol and cigarettes. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Since when are taxes an "intrusion" on your personal life? No one likes them but we all have to pay them. If cons expect middle class and low income citizens to bankroll tax cuts for the richest among us and giant corporations too big to fail, and union workers to cave for the sake of same, why then is there such a dustup over tax on their sodas and junk food? You can preach til the cows come home about deficit reduction and balanced budgets, but when it comes time for you to step up, all of a sudden the govt needs to get off your back? Take your kids to MacDonalds. Gorge yourself on Twinkies and sodas to your hearts content. Just dont be such big fat hypocrite when it comes time to pay to play. Sheesh.

You have someone in corp. marketing grining ear to ear! Rush and the like too... because you're thinking EXACTLY how they want you to think which is in big business' best interest.

Let's look at it from the fast food marketing POV. Problem: How do we get children to demand the low-quality high-calorie food that we provide at our establishment? Solution: 1. Mascot. 2. Equip restaurants with indoor/outdoor playgrounds. 3. Flashy child-friendly packaging. Throw in low-quality toy (preferably to help promote the latest movie, TV show, character, etc., in order to generate more money).

Problem: How do we get the parents to opt for feeding their children the low-quality high-calorie food at our establishment? Solution: 1. Convenience/instant gratification. 2. Advertising. Be sure to air commercials during kids' TV shows letting them know which toy is going to be offered. Keep changing toy weekly to increase demand and cause regular pestering or whining for the toys.

Problem: How do we get people to actually eat the low-quality high-calorie food at our establishment? Our food doesn't look or taste the greatest, and it will make you very fat if you eat enough of it. Solution: The saying is true that you can't polish a turd, so... how about, instead of selling our food based a palatable experience (because that aint gonna fly), let's sell 'em an idea of "happiness!" Yes... don't worry about having to cook after work. Relax, bring the kids, have 'em run around in the playground and play with the cheap toy, and we'll stuff all of you with really bad food. They'll STILL walk away happy and probably wind up coming back... often! Hence the birth of the Happy Meal. Wonder why they call it that. It WORKS, and here's a little proof: "If I wanna take my kid to McDonald's once a month for a Happy Meal as a treat..."

And before you blast me and ask if I ever take my child to McDonald's or Burger King, of course I do... rarely. And I don't consider it a treat. I call it as it is and admit that either I'm too tired or too lazy to cook. I am not in any way sold on the idea of the "happy" meal.

Now, from big business/Rush's POV. Dilemma: We know that obesity leads to health issues which can lead to unnecssary healthcare expenses. We're supposed to be against footing the bill for other people, right? But wait, we make lots of money selling people food that makes them fat with little to no nutritional value which leads to obesity-related illness which leads to unnecessary healthcare costs. And we need to keep sales up, right? Okay... what do we do??? Wait... I got it... blame the government! Don't let them think that taxing soft drinks and junk food would be a preventative measure against obesity and the astronomic costs related to it paid for by the people who are consuming it instead of putting the cost off onto those who don't. No... make them think that the government is trying to tell them what they can and can't eat. That'll make 'em good and angry. It works: "Too much government intrusion in our daily lives and I will NOT stand for it. I'm tired of it. This is my life...BUTT OUT!"

Actually, when you think of it this way, you can kinda see where a fat, unhealthy, right-wing gentleman would feel justified condemning someone for trying to promote a healthy lifestyle, especially if that person is female, black, and just so happens to be married to our dem. president.

I happen to wonder in the case of the obesity - problems if the government

[ In Reply To ..]
will make it to where the people on food stamps cannot receive these kinds of foods or if they will still be able to purchase. I do take offense in the government maybe putting a tax on me for sodas and junk food but yet allowing tax money to pay for these types of foods for others. Not saying that I disagree about us needing to be healthy because I definitely think we do.

So 5 y/o MAKE their parents take them to - McDonalds?

[ In Reply To ..]
The biggest problem is that too many parents are too lazy are too busy working odd hours to break even to make sure their children aren't sitting around all day and eating junk. Your whole argument is a load of crap. Just because my kids want a Happy Meal because of a specific toy they see on TV doesn't mean I'm gonna drive to McDonalds and let them have one.

You can't blame a fast food chain for making you fat or your kids fat when YOU decided to eat there.
Yes you CAN blame a food chain - no1joe
[ In Reply To ..]
for creating a demand for a product through advertising, and people get paid BIG BUCKS to do so. They know that they're not going to increase sales based on the quality of the main product itself because it's JUNK. Hence they sell a bit of clever packaging and a warm and fuzzy idea of happiness along with the fast food experience. It should be called a Crappy Meal if they wanted to be 100% accurate. And it works on every person who considers taking a child to McDonalds or buying a box of cereal with Shrek on the front of it, etc., etc., as a "treat."

BTW... of course a 5-year-old is not picking you up, putting you in the car, and making you take them to McDonald's (like I really need to explain that). However, yes... they can ask, cry, whine, or plead to go to McDonald's to the point of annoyance, insanity, or just that horrible sense of guilt to the parent. Better yet, they can just be good boys and girls and have their parents reward them with a Happy Meal... no crying required. The point is, through advertising, these children are asking for a main product - which is not good for them - that they probably would never have wanted in the first place and parents who are more than willing to provide it.

There is nothing about my argument that is crap. It's basic marketing... Mickey D's is famous for it... look it up!

To the poster just above this one, there was a time that my family owned a deli. Back in the early 90s when I worked there last, you could NOT buy any taxable product with food stamps. No sodas, candy, or prepared taxable foods. For instance, they could purchase cold cuts by the pound and a loaf of bread or rolls, but I couldn't sell them a hero sandwich because there would be tax on it. Things have obviously changed. Why, I have no clue.
You tell 'em no1joe!! - Katie

David Frum To Republicans: Stop Working For Fox And LimbaughMar 26, 2010
03/26/2010 David Frum used to be a speechwriter for the GW Bush administration. You may remember him as the guy who wrote the "Axis of Evil" statement for Bush's speech. In 2003, he moved over to working for the American Enterprise Institute as a Fellow. This week, Frum had a "parting of the ways" with the AEI, and is now unemployed. He was fired, in other words. On Sunday, Mr. Frum wrote on his website, FrumForum, that health-care reform had been a debacle for the Republican party, sayin ...

Released From Hospital, Limbaugh Pronounces US Health System 'just Dandy'Jan 03, 2010
By Raw StorySaturday, January 2nd, 2010 -- 12:53 pm Outspoken US conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh left hospital in Hawaii on Friday after a heart scare, and took a veiled swipe at President Barack Obama's plans to reform health care. Limbaugh, the multi-millionaire high priest of talk radio, who is a hugely influential figure in Republican politics, said doctors had found nothing wrong with his heart -- despite severe chest pains he suffered on Wednesday. "I have been treated to the ...

Union Mocks Limbaugh's New Found 'love' Of Socialized MedicineJan 05, 2010
By Stephen C. WebsterMonday, January 4th, 2010 -- 8:24 pm When right-wing talker Rush Limbaugh praised the U.S. health care system as "just dandy" based on his experiences in a Hawaii hospital, chances are he didn't quite know his words were diametrically opposed to his politics. "The treatment I received here was the best that the world has to offer," he said of services rendered at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu. Hawaii, however, is the closest thing the United States has to s ...

Old Lady - UpdateJun 27, 2013
An update here to a post a couple weeks ago.  I had my meeting, but that day I felt a noticable change in the "climate".  Since that time I honestly feel that the OM and her buddies are ganging up on me.  I am drowning in work that I cannot keep up with.  Our new people are in and I have been assigned to train.  Because of that I cannot perform my daily duties as newbies need constant guidance.  It has been one week, and I got called in and was given a verbal warnin ...

I Am A Very Happy Lady, If I Can Do This, So CanJun 17, 2014
I am expecting company this summer. I do not cook very well so I was trying to think what can I do other than crockpot dishes. Researched and bought me a panini maker. I have gotten a huge amount of recipes together, not only regular sandwiches for lunch but breakfast and desserts as well. I made a delicious one yesterday, all things I bought at Publix, grilled chicken, artichokes, mozzarella, garlic spread, spinach leafs, and my friend and I had that for lunch. I cannot believe how simple they ...

Does Your Man Sit With His Legs Crossed Like A LadyJan 25, 2010
I am watching a show this morning and the husband is sitting there with his wife with his legs crossed at the knees like a lady does. On TV this really looks sorta feminine. Anyone else have the same idea or does your hubby sit the same way? ...
