Putnam County NY Official Refuses to Hand Over Names to Journal News

He was interviewed by Megan Kelley (sp) yesterday. Good for this official! I hope he stands by his convictions. Good points were brought up. There is NO reason that registered gun owners names and addresses should be released and NO reason non-gun owners would be pointed out at the same time just because they live near someone who has a registered gun.

Assemblyman Steve Katz backed Sant, saying the newspaper had exposed the names of those who own guns for no good reason, and said the decision could put people at risk.

“The Journal News has really come up with the perfect map for the perpetrators and for the stalkers and for the criminals,” Katz said. “They have yet to give us a cogent reason why, except for the reason that they can. I am sorry — that is not acceptable.”

They should make 2nd request. After it's denied, let the judge - decide in their favor.

Despite local pols who are now trying to make release of gun owner info illegal, the request was made while it was still legal. Somehow, I doubt that effort is going to be smooth sailing for them either, since this is a 1st Amendment clash with the 2nd amendment issue. Putnam County may be red, but once out of that jurisdiction, the state is blue, so legal challenges will most likely ensue from both sides.

Politics aside, denial of FOIA requests are against state law. So are death threats, harassment, and revenge tactics such as sending white powder in an envelop, opened by an employee who then had to be decontaminated. I don't think this whup-up approach is doing any good for the gun owner's cause. As they say, don't get mad, get even, but keep it legal.

It seems like this newspaper is just trying to make trouble for those who own guns and it should be the gun owners right of privacy, as it should also be the right of the non-gun owners to have privacy.

As was stated by many in the news, now the criminals also know which houses to hit without fear. Home invasions with guns aimed at the non-gun homeowner anyone? This could very well become a reality.

Would you like your name and address published as owning or not owning a gun? I certainly wouldn't. Do you see the point?

The danger to the non-owners is pretty obvious, but owners also could become targets of thieves trying specifically to get to the guns. All the thieves have to do is wait for everyone to go to work or school, wander around the outside pretending to look for their "friend" who lives there, then break in. Happened to my neighbor 1 street over. Took, I believe, 3 hunting rifles. On the other hand, how many owners actually have guns handy if thieves do break into the house? The few owners I know have them locked away for safety reasons.

IMHO, the FOIA is getting out of hand. What's next? "Here are the names and addresses of those who have an embarrassing medical condition." Sheesh.

invasion of privacy to release the names of gun owners, but also I think it's terribly dangerous and irresponsible. They might as well release the names of people who keep gold stashed under their mattress.
