YORK, Pa. – The man who was ordered to pay the legal fees of Kansas-based anti-gay protestors who picketed his son’s 2006 funeral says he will defy the court’s order.
Albert Snyder, whose son, Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder was killed in Iraq won a $5 million verdict against Fred Phelps and Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church, a group infamous for protesting funerals of troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan with signs that read, ‘Thank God for Dead Soldiers,’ ‘God Hates Fags’ and ‘God is America’s Terrorist.’ When the verdict was overturned on appeal, Snyder was ordered to pay Phelps’ legal costs, totaling over $16,000. The story sparked outrage across the country and on Tuesday, Snyder spoke out.
"I think it's a slap in the face," he said. "It's like, 'Sorry, mister Snyder, you know, you buried your son for us, but we're gonna reverse the decision and we're gonna make you give them money so they can do this to...to more soldiers.' I think it's an insult to every soldier that's out there. I think it's an insult to every marine out there. I think it's an insult to every veteran out there that has served this country."
"I don't think I'm going to be writing a check until I hear from the Supreme Court," Snyder defiantly announced on Fox News. "I'm not about to pay them anything." |
