Poll: Americans Reject Obama's Unlimited Government

Posted: Jan 6, 2015

Confirming the 2014 election zeitgeist, a new Gallup poll finds that Americans are fed up with ever-encroaching, corrupt and incompetent government, as represented by ObamaCare and other federal policies.

For the first time since Gallup has conducted polling, people say that the "biggest problem" in America is "the government." It topped all other categories, including terrorism. "2014 was the first year ever in Gallup records that dissatisfaction with government topped the list," the 80-year-old firm said. "Government includes dissatisfaction with President Obama."

And angst over government has been climbing each year since 2009, when Obama took office, breaking a long period of relative satisfaction with government.  If this doesn't repudiate Obama's government-is-the-answer agenda and his collectivist creed that we must all be our "brother's keeper," we don't know what does.

Beyond Obama, Americans are rejecting what the Left is selling — the idea that government should determine our fate. No, they're saying that individuals should determine their own fate, returning to the core values of individualism that made this country great.

This shift in public attitudes does not bode well for the likes of Obama heir-apparent Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who sermonizes about the virtues of the public sector and the evils of the "rigged" private sector.

Americans are not realigning left, as many in the media have rejoiced. They've just been hoodwinked by slick propagandists — Alinsky's coat-and-tie vanguard — who have to disguise and package their unpopular ideas as "helping the middle class." ObamaCare, which in fact is crippling the middle class, is Exhibit A.

The Obamas and Warrens of the world have to lie and deceive. It's the only way they can sell their socialist swill. It reveals just how bad their product really is.

In his many odes to big government, Obama has waxed Orwellian about how "preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action." He sermonizes about how "we have individual responsibility, but we also have collective responsibility to each other." He insists we have to be "our brother's keeper."

Such warmed-over Marxism is right out of the Alinsky handbook for radicals, the one Obama trained from as a community organizer and the one he still preaches from today.

Obama tells people that it's not their job as individuals to go out and pursue their own life and happiness, but rather the government's job to do it for them. In the classic novel "1984," "ownlife" was Newspeak for individualism — to think and do for oneself without Big Brother's help or approval.

and not a single reference to Congress as a possible factor (15% approval rating vs Obama's rising rate of 48%) Fact is ACA, Elizabeth Warren, or "all other categories, including terrorism" were not polled. The rating comparisons were limited to big government vs big business vs big labor (at an all-time low). Also, no link to the history of this poll, dating back to 1965. The linked graph is really interesting, since it clearly shows that big government has ALWAYS polled higher than the other two categories. What exactly does that mean? It means the article's anti-Obama noise is unfounded and it also means anti-big-government sentiment has not prevented the electorate from sending "big-government" candidates to Washington.

A little research goes a long way. - I found the link for you.

I apologize to some, as I was not aware that I was obligated to provide as many links as possible to a post. I read the article, posted it on the board, and supplied the link to it.

The first few words in the first sentence gave the probable timeline, "Confirming the 2014 election zeitgeist..."

Definition of zeitgeist: The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.

Example of use: "The story captured the zeitgeist of the late 1960s."
You're welcome. - Debi

Some people don't know how to research. To me, that is difficult to understand given the field in which we work.
Now that we can look at the data... - sm

Scroll down and have a look at the pre-Obama data, where we hit very high percentages of dissatisfaction in other areas.

The data itself is the important thing to look at, not the interpretative spin of the poll advanced by Investors.com

As per the poll criteria, definition of complaints about government leadership include President Barack Obama, the Republicans in Congress and general political conflict.
Wow. Thanks for this. - Update

I didn't find this when doing my earlier search, so evidently they did poll healthcare and terrorism, among others factors. Again, a direct link to this info would have been helpful had it been included in the investors.com piece, but I guess that was just WAY too much information for us to handle, since the list contains so many issues the GOP seeks to avoid discussing.
Agree. Investors did not want to post a link to the data. - sm

They prefer to reference the data and tell people what it means, and their target audience doesn't care to delve deeper. Whenever I read an article that provides no link to the material referred to, it's a red flag for me.
Perhaps my missing link post - needs clarification

Not a single word in my comments were intentionally directed to you personally. My observations were confined to commenting on the editorial/opinion piece you linked to. Its author is not obliged to provide links either, but whenever I encounter such a slanted presentation that presumes to interpret a poll FOR ME, the first thing I look for is the poll itself. When the courtesy of a direct citation has not been extended, I then, quite naturally, go looking for other deliberate omissions, always a sign of weakness and fear of full factual disclosure. That's when I noticed no mention of Congress by the author. I guess he/she was just too preoccupied with littering the landscape with as many partisan buzz words and pejorative words and phrases as he/she could possibly think of.

The only problem I'm having with the "probable timeline" defense is the author chose not disclose the Gallup's historical results dating back to the 60s (by design, of course). Ergo, I don't find the inclusion of his German vocabulary all that impressive or enlightening. Had he been candid with that information, then his entire fallacious blame-Obama argument would have disintegrated.

BTW, the only 60s zeitgeist this story captured is those tedious Marxist/Alinsky and Orwellian references. The reality is that those also are actually 2008 and 2012 "zeigeist" after all, reminiscent of failed campaign rhetoric and lost elections.

Yes it does - but

all I said was ACA was not part of the Big Government Gallup poll, pointing out the deception in the previous piece trying to claim it was a factor in that poll's results. This notion is further undermined by the fact that Big Government has always polled higher than Big Business and Big Labor in terms of threat perceptions.

Now, about those ACA/Obamacare polls. Back in 2013 a CNN poll found there was more OPPOSITION to "Obamacare" than there was to the ACA. At the same time, there was more SUPPORT for Obamacare than there was for the ACA. Confused? Me, too. Perhaps even more stunning was the finding that 30% of the respondents didn't even know what the ACA is, while on 12% didn't know what Obamacare is. To no one's surprise, this shows just how much polls results are influence by how questions are worded and which ones are posed.

Fast forward to 2014 when a Kaiser Family Foundation survey showed that Americans "steadfastly" support specific provisions ACA/OC contains. In other words, even with just a little more info, results change significantly in the positive direction:

60 percent of Americans favor the employer mandate and 38 percent do not. When the poll question informs the respondents employers with 100+ workers will not be fined since they already are in compliance with the mandate, that support climbs by more than 15 percent.

75 percent favors Medicaid expansion, 76 percent favors subsidies, and 78 percent favors the exchanges. Once they know they won't be subject to the individual mandate if premiums exceeds a specified percentage of income, opposition becomes support. That poll also demonstrated converse results how negative wording of questions produces negative perceptions.

IMO, the only valid conclusions I can draw from polls have little to do with actual support or opposition to the law. What is clear is the more people learn about the law, the more they like it. It also tells me how thoroughly invested its opponents are in keeping the public in the dark with their tireless negative information campaigns. The longer the law remains in effect, the less likely they are to succeed in these efforts since eventually, the public will be educated enough to make an informed decision. No wonder the GOP Congress is in such a hurry to repeal, repeal, repeal.

I think the ACA has been beneficial to those who could not get coverage and this sky-is-falling crowd is fading out because their claims just do not ring true.

The true death panels are the insurance companies and the lobby groups who spend huge amounts of money on negative publicity that should be spent on patient care. That, IMHO, is what should be regulated, which accelerated with the bad Citizens United ruling.

Are the costs still too high? Are the insurance companies still manipulating the system?

Of course, and therein lies the problem. Get them out of it.

The ACA has helped people tremendously who were unable to get coverage before. It is shameful in a country as rich as ours that people were unable to get health insurance coverage and the fact that they finally can get it must be the great triumph of the ACA.
Obamacare has become the keyword for - anything in healthcare
[ In Reply To ..]
that doesn't work. The people don't have any idea when Obamacare/ACA actually effected a change or a result, they just blame anything they don't like on it. People have gone back in time to blame Obamacare for situations that existed before Obamacare ever came into existence! Employers blame Obamacare for any changes or price increases they pass on. Never mind we had enormous price increases in insurance in the years prior to Obama's presidency.

Polls are a farce, when people don't understand the terms.

I think a lot of people are waking up to the reality of this president and they're not liking what they're witnessing overall. The big picture stinks and there's no way around that. The polls show it. Other independent political or nonpolitical blogs show it as well. We have 745 days to go.

What's "great" about it? It's just more of the - same smear campaign. It gets boring.

doesn't mean they are in the majority. In fact, many Dems who voted for Obama the first time didn't vote for him the second, and many who voted for him both times are no longer supporting him.

Yet after allegedly losing all that support the GOP still - couldn't eke out a White House win

[ In Reply To ..]
and the Dems still prevailed. Guess we'll have to wait til 2016 to see if they get it figured out. Counting on endless anti-Obama rhetoric, slash-and-burn legislation, obstruction and avoidance of key issues probably won't help them much.

And they don't have a snowball's chance in - 2016, either. (Thank goodness.)

All it proves is that 18% of ALL PEOPLE POLLED have concerns about government leadership, which, per the poll criteria, includes President Barack Obama, the Republicans in Congress and general political conflict. Eighteen percent is not a majority of anything.
