CBS/NY Times Poll: 92% of Americans Support

"CBS/NY Times Poll: 92% of Americans Support Universal Background Checks

Ninety-two percent of Americans favor background checks for all potential gun buyers, according to a new CBS News/New York Times poll. – 9 in 10 back universal gun background checks

IF YOU want to know what a minority looks like, how lonely the N.R.A. is on their extremist stance on gun safety, the latest CBS/New York Times polllays it out for you.

Support for universal background checks went across party lines: 89 percent of Republicans and 93 percent of Democrats and independents were in favor, as well as 93 percent of gun households and 85 percent of those living in a household with a member of the National Rifle Association.

Seventy-four percent of Americans, meanwhile, said that more armed security guards would help prevent mass shootings in public places. Thirty-five percent said armed guards would help a lot in places like schools, movie theatres and malls, and another 39 percent said they would help some. One in four said they would not help.

The N.R.A. leadership and the right wing noise machine getting all the air time are a very small minority in this country.

People in this group now include many Republicans in the House, as well as Senator Rand Paul, who’s out on a limb on this issue in the Senate.

Will Americans allow the minority, who are backed by powerful interests with lots of money that finance campaigns, to win on gun safety and keep important new laws like universal background checks from becoming law? We’re about to find out."

As Rachel Maddow commented, "92% of Americans don't support anything. 92% of Americans don't like sunny days." :) But 92% of us want universal background checks for gun purchases. Something to keep in mind as the group-think on the networks insists this will be hard to pass. Congressmen read polls too... Link to a longer CBS report on this below.--A dem

So What? So do I but it's not going to keep them - away from criminals. Wise up.

There's nothing wrong with background checks, so let's do them. You say you agree, along with 92% of Americans. There is a lot of enforcement that isn't taking place that WOULD keep guns away from criminals. Why not commit to improving the system? What is there to be afraid of?

Poll Reveals Most Americans Don't Know They Got A Tax CutFeb 13, 2010
Posted by Robert Hendin February 12, 2010 1:18 PM Of all the very information that came out of the recent CBS News/New York Times poll, one question stuck out, that of taxes. Here's the poll question: "In general, do you think the Obama Administration has increased taxes for most Americans, decreased taxes for most Americans or have they kept taxes the same for most Americans?" The answer: • 24 percent of respondents said they INCREASED taxes. • 53 percent said they kept taxes t ...

Poll: Americans Believe CIA Torture Was JustifiedDec 16, 2014
About half of Americans believe that the CIA was justified in its harsh interrogation methods of "war on terror" detainees, a poll found Monday, days after a damning US report revealed harrowing details of torture. The US Senate report released last week said the Central Intelligence Agency's interrogation of Al-Qaeda suspects, including beatings, rectal rehydration and sleep deprivation, was far more brutal than acknowledged and did not produce useful intelligence. The findings triggered ...

Poll Of NRA Members Shows 74% SupportDec 15, 2012
Not much lower than 82% for the general population, but definitely MUCH higher than the NRA leadership. I've forgotten the number, but most NRA members, normal citizens who undergo them themselves, actually believe gun purchases require background checks. Although the Brady law requires background checks be conducted by commercial gun dealers, at least 40% of gun sales  (last study 15 years old) are private sales not involving background checks. (BTW, eBay and Craig's List do not ...

Poll: Americans Say We'd Be Better Off If Mitt Romney Won In 2012Jul 03, 2014
While Obama beat Romney by 4 percentage points, voters say a do-over in the 2012 election wouldn't be a bad thing. "Would Mitt (Romney) have been a better fit? More voters in hindsight say yes," Malloy said. Overall, 45 percent of voters say America would be better off if the White House went to the Republicans in 2012, compared to 38 percent who said we'd be worse off. And because it's World UFO Day, a 2012 survey indicated 65 percent of Americans think Barack Obama would be b ...

Poll: Americans Reject Obama's Unlimited GovernmentJan 06, 2015
Confirming the 2014 election zeitgeist, a new Gallup poll finds that Americans are fed up with ever-encroaching, corrupt and incompetent government, as represented by ObamaCare and other federal policies.   For the first time since Gallup has conducted polling, people say that the "biggest problem" in America is "the government." It topped all other categories, including terrorism. "2014 was the first year ever in Gallup records that dissatisfaction with government topped the list," the 8 ...

Conservatives Make Their Voices Heard After Poll Shows Romney SupportAug 23, 2012
Among African-Americans at Zero Percent. by Jason Howerton. "A new poll conducted by NBC and the Wall Street Journal shows that support for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney among black people stands at an incredible zero percent. Nada. Zilch. Zero. But in order for the poll to be accurate, one would have to assume that there are indeed “zero” African-Americans that stand with Mitt Romney. And while the folks at NBC or WSJ certainly aren’t obligated to justify their find ...

CNN Poll Shamefully Skewed. De-skew The Poll And It'sSep 11, 2012
The campaign to mislead the public, discourage conservative voters, etc. is underway, full bore. Do NOT believe ANY polls.  Think for yourself - and VOTE, regardless of any polls that might suggest that Obama has this sewn up.  The DNC had a disastrous convention and they're also trying to make that look like the best thing since conventions began. (You can tell from the desperation of his campaign strategy that HE knows he doesn't have it sewn up.) ...

O'Keefe Documentary Claims To Uncover College Support Of ISIS Support ClubApr 02, 2015
So, I read on a friend's private conservative blog elsewhere that James O'Keefe, a conservative documentary filmmaker, had just "caught red-handed" some college administrators at a university in Florida who were "encouraging and supporting" ISIS supporters.  I like my friend, but, erm, I don't always agree with his politics and  I'm not so sure his assertion is actually the case on this one.  In fact, the blog author wrote his post based on his assumption on a ...
