Olympia Snowe confirms she'll filibuster health reform

Posted: Dec 21, 2009

(More obstructism by Republicans just might lead to another vote in the middle of the night, IMHO. I hope they're forced to stay and actually filibuster, instead of just saying the word "filibuster" and everyone gets to go home.)

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-ME) said on Sunday she will join Republicans in filibustering the Senate health care bill, claiming the process has been moving too fast.

"I deeply regret that I cannot support the pending Senate legislation as it currently stands," Snowe said in a statement, announcing that she won't allow it to proceed to a final vote.

She cited "continued concerns with the measure and an artificial and arbitrary deadline of completing the bill before Christmas that is shortchanging the process on this monumental and trans-generational effort."

Snowe's affirmation comes one day after Senate Democrats announced their unified support, along with the two independent senators, for the bill. As things stand, every Republican is projected to filibuster it.

"Only three weeks ago the Senate received a more than 2,000 page bill on one of the most complex issues in our history," Snowe said. "It defies logic that we are now expected to vote on the overall, final package before Christmas with no opportunity to amend it."

Snowe echoed these claims on Sunday in an appearance on CBS. "This process denies us the opportunity to thoroughly and carefully and deliberately evaluate what's at stake," she said.

The Senator from Maine told the New York Times that "it is a take-it-or-leave-it package." She said she still remains interested in pursuing health reform, just not the current version on the table.

Snowe's declaration leaves no room for the Democratic leadership to upset any senators, as each of the 60 outside the GOP are now critical to the success of the legislation.

"I remain convinced we must work toward a responsible, common sense solution to reverse the trend of spiraling health care costs," she said, "that will cause one-in-four Americans this year to have either inadequate coverage or none at all, and threatens affordable coverage for millions more Americans in the future."

The GOP leadership has on numerous instances said the process is moving too fast. Democrats have shot back and said this health care debate has been going on for over a year.

Snowe's vote has been heavily courted by the White House and Democratic leadership in an effort to achieve a bipartisan bill. They succeeded in winning her vote for the Senate Finance Committee bill, which also excluded the public option. Snowe's demands have largely centered on removing the provision.

bill passes. I sat through a meeting last Thursday evening with a group of our local physicians, over 325 in attendance. I was completely FOR this healthcare bill until I heard the concerns and frustrations expressed by these physicians. It really got me to thinking, opened my eyes and has totally changed my mind. I am all for healthcare reform but not this bill, not now, not after having things brought to my attention that I had never thought about. While I do not think it is going to happen, I hope and pray for a miracle that this does not pass. My thoughts are not party-related, they are personal-related. When I sit and listen to this many physicians voice sincere concern over the lack of patient care that is coming down with this bill, it scares me for myself, my husband, my children and especially my grandchildren.

If you have not already, talk with your personal physician and find out their opinions and thoughts on it. I wish I had done this a lot earlier, I would have been hammering my senators/representatives in Washington.

Are extremely concerned about 36 million (or even less than this) being thrust into an already bogged down healthcare system. There are not enough GPs, FPs or PCPs to cover that many people in the United States, at this moment. Here it already takes on average 1 week to see your PCP, if you are ill and need to see someone sooner then you see the doc that is on-call for that day.

That is one of my biggest concerns with this bill. It just makes sense to me to be sure ahead of time that the people that you are offering healthcare to are actually going to have decent access to it. I have a family and friends in the UK, one of the friends has lung cancer at the age of 26 and he is on a 6 month waiting list to see an oncologist. I hope that this is not what we are in for here.
So it's better to leave them without insurance because they won't have decent access? - ginger

That's Fox News Channel logic.

And hey, my feeling is anything that will get more folks into the health care system is only going to help me as a medical transcriptionist: it's more work.

Fox News Channel logic, I would have to watch it, which I do not. It is sad that you cannot come on this board and actually have a discussion about the issues without someone making ASSumptions. This is one of the issues that we have in Washington from BOTH sides.

You are no longer worth my time, so I will move on where I can have an adult discussion with someone else concerning this issue. Have a good day and Merry Christmas. :)

With EMR and Obama's EHR stimulus package, who knows what there will be left for a lot of us MTs. As well as the MT industry going with outsourcing already.

I don't see getting the folks on board with this flawed healthcare reform bull/bill giving us any more work, but again, we will just have to wait and see.

I don't follow. Are you saying that there aren't enough doctors so we shouldn't reform health care? Because then there will be too many patients?

if there are not enough healthcare providers willing to participate in the "public option" or the dwindling payments offered by Medicare and Medicaid, then access will be a huge issue. One can have all of the "insurance" in the world, but if there aren't people willing to provide it at the salary and personal investments (financially/loans and personally/sacrifice), then it really doesn't mean anything...except for on paper or logarithm.

Part of the shortage of doctors is due to the baby boomers aging. So, should all of us boomers go kill ourselves now? Nah, that's nonsense.

Just like foregoing health care reform because we're afraid of not having enough doctors.

I linked to a variety of sources regarding the actual statistics re: PCP/GP enrollment shortages. Those facts are not up to interpretation or debate.

That said, healthcare reform is not a "black and white" issue, but one of many grey areas. I have offered up my personal opinions of how things should be reformed on this very board. It is not in any way comparable to what has been suggested by either party.

And, here's another radical view of healthcare reform and one that is entirely do-able.

Here's the deal... Even under Bush, our debt was only, at max 3.24% of the GDP. In 2009, Obama has spent us into 11% of the GDP, and without this healthcare bill, next year will already be a whopping 22%. The average since WWII has been 2.4%, so this is atrocious. My grandmother is livid that her Medicare benefits will be cut, and while I support a woman's right to choose (because I believe that gov't shouldn't stand between a doc and patient, not because I support abortions, per se), I don't think taxdollars should pay for them. There aren't enough docs as it is, and I've heard in droves around here that docs are planning, or have already, dropped Medicare because they don't compensate at even 'at cost' levels, so docs have been working in the negative with Medicare before the cuts in this bill. Elderly patients are really worried about finding care if this passes, and I won't be surprised if there is a major flip in control of Congress come November. At the rate things are going now, my doc says he'll be 'volunteering', not making a living, if this keeps up.

Of interest to MTs, Pelosi's version REQUIRES all docs to switch to EMR, which is the kiss of death to our profession, IMHO. Support this bill if you want, between now and 2014 you may be looking for a new vocation.

OH YEA!!! More and more logic showing up...it's great - vigilant
