Barbara Bush 'Glad' Health Care Reform Passed

Posted: Jun 14, 2010

She is so much like her Mom!!! I bet she shocked some people at Faux!

Barbara Bush, daughter of president George W. Bush, appeared as a guest on "Fox News Sunday" this week to discuss her non-profit Global Health Corps, whose mission is to bring health equity to the U.S. and Africa, and she made some comments that surprised host Chris Wallace.

"Why do, basically, people with money have good health care and why do people who live on lower salaries not have good health care?" Bush asked. "Health should be a right for everyone."

"What do you think about Obama health care reform?" Wallace asked.

"Obviously the health care reform bill was highly debated by a lot of people," Bush responded., "and I'm glad the bill was passed."

For one thing, I do not understand this general statement - she makes, like lots of people do.

About people with money getting good health care and people on lower salaries not? If you are TRULY poor, there is Medicaid. I have a sick relative with no money. She qualified for Medicaid and has been in the hospital for weeks. Her bill is probably over 100 grand, but she gets the same care as the guy in the next room. She pays nothing for this care, and is so grateful. Why do we act as if people with no money are dying on the streets? It is NOT happening! the HCR bill has a lot of problems, and will probably ruin and bankrupt Medicaid and possibly Medicare. What good will that do???

Low income is not the only criteria for Medicaid eligibility. - sm

Aside from the requirement of earning less than 133% or proverty level, the following guidelines apply. These are the ONLY groups who qualify for Medicaid:

1. Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), automatically receive Medicaid.
2. Individuals who receive Old Age Pension (OAP) are eligible for the Old Age Pension Health and Medical Fund. OAP recipients also receive Medicaid if they receive SSI.
3. Individuals can also apply when they or a loved one need intensive in-home or nursing home care.

There are additional state guidelines that apply. Medicaid only covers around 45% of poor FAMILIES. Individuals (unless blind or permanently disabled) are stuck out.

What is really sad is that "low income" people don't get Medicaid in my state. For several years I was the sole provider for my son and I after leaving an abusive relationship, working several jobs just to keep a roof over our heads. I was told I did not qualify for Medicaid because I made more than $398 a month, which I did not make much more than that for quite awhile. I think I made around 15,000 a year, which was very hard to survive on, but managed (a lot of macaroni and cheese and a 1-bedroom apartment). LOL My son got Medicaid, but I did not qualify. I could have quit working and went on Welfare and got insurance, but I prefer working. This country is backwards.
Unbelievable. Guess they wanted you to reconcile - with the abuser so

his income could disqualify the both of you! What state is that?

Michigan. Yes, it is a pretty sad state of affairs when you are working making peanuts and staying off welfare and you are rewarded by the state denying you any healthcare. I would have even tried to pay a small premium, but they don't do that. That is why many people do not work low-paying jobs. They figure they can do better on welfare than they can working, which they probably do. I just have different beliefs. It is definitely the working poor who suffer the most in this country when it comes to healthcare. The people who don't work for whatever reason, collect welfare, food stamps and insurance. The rich, well they can afford it, but if you are working and trying to support yourself, there is nothing for you. Yeah, I would rather live in the streets than go back with the abuser.
Come to think of it, you reminded me of - the time I was also in that situation. sm

Or at least, sort of. I divorced my son's father and found myself in an abusive marriage a few years later. Once I found the strength to leave, it never occurred to me to even apply for health care benefits since my son was covered under his dad's insurance policy at work and I was no longer living in a "family unit."

Later on, I became disabled with back pain after 20 years of INTENSE slave scribing, year after year after year without a vacation, working 50-60 hour work weeks, all holidays, no sick time, no benefits, no health care, etc (early 90s after outsourcing engulfed the profession and before MTSO start-ups offered benefits). I finally had a physical collapse and was forced to stop working and move back in with my mother after I lost my car and my house. My son went to live with his dad.

Even with all that, I could not qualify for Medicaid since SSI policy prevented my being recognized as permanently disabled. I stayed out of work for 7 long years, invented and reinvented my own physical therapy regimen by hit and miss, lost some weight and after a great deal of pain, anguise and many set-backs healthwise, was finally able to return to work right before my mother passed away. I have no doubt that had I been afforded Medicaid at the onset, I could have returned to work YEARS earlier.

So much for the other poster's notion that all poor folks get a free ride on Medicaid and great medical care..and you are right on when you point out how shafted the WORKING poor are. Guess it should come as no surprise that, as we speak, certain senators are trying to eliminate the $25 per week federal unemployment insurance subsidy, thus decreasing jobless checks by $100 per month to laid-off/outsourced workers and other recession economy refugees, in order to avoid ending tax breaks to hedge fund managers or tinkering with the war chest funds and what not.

For the record, I too would choose the underbelly of a bridge before laying eyes on my loser abuser ever again.

What a shame, isn't it. To me, there are many people who just don't want to work and are collecting welfare, which hurts it for the people that really need it. It's also sickening that illegal aliens can get health insurance and people who are citizens and went through what we did can't. We are sending all kinds of aid to other countries and our country won't help us. This is wrong.

On the abuse issue, many people wonder why women put up with abuse. Well, I guess they feel it is better than putting themselves and their children out in the streets with no help.

What a sad state our country has become. Good luck to you.

According to what I have been reading today, NO. While Congress has used its taxing power to fund Social Security and Medicare, never before has it used its commerce power to mandate that an individual person engage in an economic transaction with a private company. Honest Question About Health Care ReformFeb 19, 2010
My husband owns a small business and in the last 6-9 months, we have been hounded more than ever by insurance company representatives and brokers looking for our business.  Are they looking for sheer numbers if this reform goes through, or is there something else I'm missing?    In any case, it certainly doesn't seem that the insurance companies are worried about health care reform hurting them.  Maybe they're just trying to lock us in so then they can raise ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...
