My husband is convinced that it's all going to fall apart

Posted: Mar 2, 2011

He is convinced that our economy is going to collapse and that there is going to be severe social unrest.  Last year he wanted to start stockpiling.  Now he wants to increase the speed at which we're stockpiling because all of a sudden he thinks we only have until the end of this year.  He bought a gun, I guess to protect our stockpile.  This morning he said he wants to buy silver so we have some kind of tradeable currency in our "grab and go bags."  He also mentioned seeing something you can put in your bathtub to fill up to store 70 gallons of fresh water which he thinks we need in case the water supply is tainted I guess.  It's all driving me pretty crazy and causing some problems between us.  Wanted to ask you who are more aware and in the political "know" here what you think about that kind of thing happening.

My DH said we were going into a severe depression about 4 years ago. - Backwards Typist

He also said everything was going to collapse. Back in the '70s, his father stated we would see a great depression worse than the '29 depression.

I believe it may happen, but crossing my fingers that they're both wrong. In the meantime, I've been the one stockpiling food. I went through a personal 'great depression' back in the late '70s where the only ones who ate were the kids and we ate if there was anything left. Since that time, I have always stockpiled and bought in bulk since that time.

Now with prices rising so fast like they are, I'm glad I did. I have enough food for a year. All I need to buy is some powdered milk (yuk!), a good flashlight and emergency radio in case of a power failure. We have a well, so no problem there. We won't pack 'grab and go'. We will hunker down where we are. Make sure your kit has medical supplies.

I hope he takes classes on using a gun safely. We are hunters, so we already know how to use a gun safely. We are really self-sufficient and are not worried.

I'm not trying to scare you, just letting you know there are a lot of people doing just what your husband wants to do and is doing. We can't buy silver or gold, though, but we don't need it. We can survive without it. Although I don't want to test DH's theory, it's better to be safe than sorry.

He has a few friends who are very into target shooting and guns. One belongs to a local gun club so they've been going together and the friend with all of the guns has been teaching him some things. He also bought a locking gun cabinet/safe that he keeps it locked in, and that is up high on the top closet shelf. We have a 10-year-old girl in the house. He wants to go to Sam's Club this weekend and get more stuff as we probably have about a month or so of food here...not a big stockpile. I've been really irrigated by his talking about this almost all the time now, and I really feel like I don't need any more to worry about, but I guess it could be reality at some point.

It could and might happen. When/if it does, the - politicians and very rich (sm)

If this kind of situation comes up, and personally I think it is not entirely improbable, I don't think that silver and gold are really the best thing to stock up on. Remember, you can't eat silver or gold.

It would be better to stock up on items that would be highly tradable and things that most people will want or need. In this type of scenario, everything will be going back to the good old barter system, as in I'll trade you this carton of cigarettes for that powdered milk, or I'll trade you this bottle of vodka for those bags of flour and rice.

Obviously, cigarettes and alcohol will be in high demand and will be extremely tradable. Food and water will also be highly tradable. But don't forget about the other simple everyday things that will be in high demand and short supply. Seeds for people to grow gardens, medical things like Band-Aids and aspirin, and things like coffee, etc. Anything that people can use and eat will be in high demand. Gold and silver not so much.

The only problem with that is... - how much can the average person

[ In Reply To ..]
stockpile? A year maybe for typical family without a warehouse, then what? Better to just learn to live off the land I guess. I would probably just want to die anyway if the world got all post apocolyptic like that.

That's what I keep saying - wimt

If it gets as bad as he talks like it will, I don't know if I'd want to live that way anyway. I guess I'd have to for my daughter, though.

Most grocery store canned goods are good for 2 years - Backwards Typist

[ In Reply To ..]
or longer if the cans are not dented, bulging, or leaking. I've used canned goods older than that with no problem.

I have food grade buckets for my pasta, cake mixes, puddings, flour, rice, etc. I keep them in a cool dry place away from heat and light. A basement would be fine as long as there are shelves to put the stockpile on, or shelves along the stairs leading to the basement which is better.

I am trying to figure out a way to keep my frozen stuff frozen should we lose power. Can't afford a generator. Winter would be no problem, but summer sure would be trouble.
You\'re my hero! I wish I could do half of that! - maybe I should get started, huh?/nm

I started with $10 a week. Didn't hurt the pocket - Backwards Typist

too much. I consider myself lucky because the stores around here have a lot of 10 for $10 items for canned tomatoes and sauces, pasta, cake mixes, Betty Crocker potato mixes (all varieties), etc.

During the holidays, baking supplies like 5 lb. of flour were 2/$3, chocolate baking bars or chips 2/$5, sugars (brown, confectioner, and granulated)were lowered. Cake mixes this past week were $.87 each for Duncan Hines.

I made a list of items, quantity I needed, and crossed the items off when I filled the quota. I only have 3 items to complete, which will probably happen around the Easter holiday.

Just make sure the date stamp on canned goods are good for those 2 years. I check the stamp on every can before buying. You'd be surprised at how many run out in less than a year or even in a year.

I don't have a lot of toilet paper but am building that up. There's always newspapers, phone books, etc., which could be useful, but not for regular toilet flushing. LOL

and any other regularly-used products are also necessary. You can buy the powdered version of mustard and ketchup.

I know someone that has enough TP for a year and bottled water for the same amount of time. I prefer not to buy water since we have a well.

My sister is stocking up as well. She is stockpiling everything from food, water, ammo, etc. If you listen to Glen Beck - he will tell you buy silver and gold - it will never be worthless as the US dollar will be in the near future. Will it really happen? Unfortunately, nobody has a crystal ball to foresee the future but I would rather be prepared than be scrambling trying to find something to feed my family! And if I have all of those things already saved - I\'m a step ahead of those who didn\'t! STOCK UP!

What specifically is he afraid of? - sm

Is he worried poor people will steal his food? Rich people will come and get whatever you have left? Muslims will nuke us? Races will start fighting each other? Really, I am wondering?

Your husband isn't alone. - sm

My neighbor feels exactly the same as your husband, right down to the purchase of silver. He's stockpiling food and believes he has enough to take care of "us" (he includes me in this, thankfully) for six months.

If he's not hurting anything by doing all this stockpiling, why are you against it? You might thank him someday for doing so, considering the present pulse of this country.

We have been doing the same thing. Tons of rice, flour in the freezer and dry beans. We have a salvage store where I go and get canned goods very cheaply that aren't even close to past date. The most important thing we've done though, is to plant fruit trees. Well, we didn't do it, but my parents who live next door to us have. We've only gotten one peach going but this spring I'm getting some more. My mom has pomegranites, peach, orange, satsuma, lemon, figs, blueberries, grapes, persimmons, blackberries - I can't even remember them all. Last year, we couldn't even preserve it all, had to give some away. We have also bought guns. We sort of feel like, if it ever gets that bad, people are going to start taking from the ones who have. I heard the other day on the news about one town in which crime has tripled -peoples homes are being broken into and the only thing being stolen is food. It's so sad.

I've also done a lot of research on how to cook outside, cooking flat breads, etc. If it never happens, I'll be so thankful, but if it does, I want my family to be provided for.

I posted a few days ago on the Health Board. I had a very bad fall down icy cement steps last Friday. My ankle was terribly swollen, and I have a bad abrasion on the top of my foot.
