fall gardens

Posted: Aug 2, 2010

Is anyone planting their fall garden and if so, what are you planting? I have a bed dug and tilled, now I am just wondering what to plant. It's my first fall garden. I am in zone 6, first frost about mid-October. My concern is that there will not be enough sunshine. My backyard gets about 6-7 hours in midsummer, with trees and buildings and hills all around. What do you plant now to harvest in falltime?

;

I'm sick of gardening/weeding by August so I don't plant anything... - I plant my rear end on a chair and read..lol..nm

Mums are cool! - Scoobie

I like low-maintenance gardening - mums are cool! I also like planting rosemary, because I like cooking with it and it's a beautiful bush, but it needs LOTS of room. Pansies/petunias are cool. (I get them confused, but you'll see them when you go garden shopping!) Pansies/petunias are colorfu and will last thru early winter. (I live in the South).

Happy gardening!

Gardening until end of harvest...you talkin' like veggies? - Hayseed

The "cole" crops like it cool and you can often sneak in another round of broccoli, cabbages and kale (edible and ornamental)...those sorts of things. Also, peas (both edible and flowering sweet peas) like the cool as well and so long as you have a sunny spot should do really well.

As far as ornamentals, like the other poster said, mums are great as are sedum and even pansies if you can find them already started, as they prefer the cool weather and always seem to peter out in the heat...plus they all look kickin' planted together or displayed amongst pumpkins, gourds, and corn stalks and hay bales. :)

Good luck and enjoy the harvest and fruits of your labors!

hayseed - thanks for veg info

Veggies it is, and yes, I am thinking collards, peas, fast-growing bush beans, and some root vegetables such as turnips and beets. All these will be new to me. Sunshine may be a problem, maybe down to 5-6 hours in the little garden spot. I have some big containers for the sunny roof, just wondering what to put in those! Probably the peas and beans.

My Husband Is Convinced That It's All Going To Fall ApartMar 02, 2011
He is convinced that our economy is going to collapse and that there is going to be severe social unrest.  Last year he wanted to start stockpiling.  Now he wants to increase the speed at which we're stockpiling because all of a sudden he thinks we only have until the end of this year.  He bought a gun, I guess to protect our stockpile.  This morning he said he wants to buy silver so we have some kind of tradeable currency in our "grab and go bags."  He also mention ...

Don't Fall For This SCAM That Just Fooled Me!Dec 18, 2010
Was buying a gift last week online... either Amazon or eBay, I forget.  An ad for a *free sample* of "Dermitage Advanced Skin Renewal" system comes up, disguised as an offer from the website.  "Just pay $3.97 for shipping", and supposedly you get a free trial size of this anti-aging skincare product.  So, I bite.  I figure, $3.97 isn't much; it'll be fun to try out this product. Dermitage package arrives today.   The invoice still says "14-day free tri ...

Requesting Prayer After A FallMar 13, 2015
I posted a few days ago on the Health Board. I had a very bad fall down icy cement steps last Friday. My ankle was terribly swollen, and I have a bad abrasion on the top of my foot. Later I posted, saying things were looking better. Today the condition seems worse again. The top of my foot is red and very warm. I have been on antibiotics since last Sunday. The wound on the top of my foot was looking much better and beginning to dry out. Now tonight it looks like it may be infected again ...

Boehner Tells House G.O.P. To Fall In LineNov 11, 2012
From the NY Times: "On a conference call with House Republicans a day after the party’s electoral battering last week, Speaker John A. Boehner dished out some bitter medicine, and for the first time in the 112th Congress, most members took their dose. Their party lost, badly, Mr. Boehner said, and while Republicans would still control the House and would continue to staunchly oppose tax rate increases as Congress grapples with the impending fiscal battle, they had to avoid the n ...
