chronically out of TAT (turn-around time) for a very long time now. Apparently the bad rep this industry has earned itself by dropping wages well below what is needed for people to enter the field rate is showing up in inadequate labor supply. And, of course, Nuance's dreadful reputation means people apply everywhere else first.

I would love to do this work on well past retirement time if I could. In the meantime, though, I refuse to work OT constantly so that wages don't have to go up or so that our clients don't decide to offshore or lessen their dependence on transcriptionists.

Ultimately the decision is the providers' -- they will either increase pay to what the market requires to generate an adequate supply of MT/MEs or they won't. It's still unclear if most could technologically and economically (would it really save money?) do without us yet, but since most people who chose to leave the industry already have and large numbers of older people are retiring every year, the pressure's on them.

Great article. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Who is this Gary Smith character? - He needs schooling.

I'm on the UPMC account, and I can tell you that it's not unusual for voice recognition on some speakers to be 90% wrong. The reports have to be deleted and retyped. Gary Smith is living in a dream world.

The comments section really gets down. :) I USED to - routinely transcribe familiar dictators

at over 300 LPH, 350 common (extensive templates, verbage in expander, etc). Over the past few years, in spite of my literally adding new words and phrases to my expander EVERY DAY, I cannot depend on consistently transcribing much above 200 LPH.

In other words, as I continue to get faster, my LPH count has gone down. Tremendously. Same thing in editing, even accounting for all the obvious factors, such as slowing down because my standard 98.5-100% accuracy is no longer good enough.

As for being able to edit the stuff we get these days almost twice as fast transcribe? I enjoy editing and am very good at it. If it could be done consistently, I'd be among those doing it. As it is, my official computer-counted LPH counts are not much above my transcribed LPH counts.

"Gary's" with another company, but I don't think for a minute he needs schooling. On the contrary, I imagine he could explain a number of reasons why my official line counts (and thus pay) have been dropping for the past 3 years while I work just as hard and better.

They aren't doing this because they don't know what our value added is and how long it takes to produce a skilled transcriptionist, they're doing it because they can.

Lost A FriendJan 14, 2014
I wonder if this has happened to anyone? I really need to vent about this, so if this long, sorry. Last year about June, my best friend moved across country. We used to be close like sisters. In fact, she often considered me her sister. I was her only female friend in this part of the country. She had been through so much with me. It was the kind of relationship that if we didn't speak for a couple of months or so, one of us would call and it was like we had spoken just yesterday. ...

America Lost In A MazeJul 30, 2010
This article by Maureen Dowd sort of rings true. The headline caught my eye and I read the whole thing. America lost in a maze Insurgents undermine efforts at every turn The waterfall of leaks on Afghanistan underlines the awful truth: We’re not in control. Not since Theseus fought the Minotaur in his maze has a fight been so confounding. The more we try to do for our foreign protectorates, the more angry they get about what we try to do. As Congress passed $59 billion in additional w ...

It Seems To Me Sensible Conservatives Have Lost Their PrideJan 24, 2013
go did go wrong for a couple of decades, letting themselves be swept farther right without scoping out the crowd they found themselves part of and where it was going, or why. That did cost us all badly, but what happened when we lost their stabilizing contribution just shows how much we need them to be good conservatives, to not sit quietly out in some chastened "independent-land" while extremists continue to dominate the discussion. It's way past time for them to get over it and step up ...
