It seems to me sensible conservatives have lost their pride

Posted: Jan 24, 2013

go did go wrong for a couple of decades, letting themselves be swept farther right without scoping out the crowd they found themselves part of and where it was going, or why.

That did cost us all badly, but what happened when we lost their stabilizing contribution just shows how much we need them to be good conservatives, to not sit quietly out in some chastened "independent-land" while extremists continue to dominate the discussion.

It's way past time for them to get over it and step up to offer the rational conservative voices we need so badly.

Troll much? Looks like it. Did you write this just to stir up trouble?

Despite what you have read in the tabloids or had Chris Matthews tell you what to think and say, conservatives have not lost our pride and confidence in being a conservative. We are proud to belong to the party of forward thinkers. Of men and women of all races, religions (or no religions). We are proud that we are the party that helped abolish slavery, that we are the party of Washington, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and other fine republican leaders. We are proud that the communist party does not support our party. We are proud that we stand for the rights of ALL men and women and children. We are proud that we hold the constitution dear to our hearts and don't try and change it. We are proud because we understand the simple concept of not spending more than you take in and that the republican party actually comes up with ideas for balancing a budget. We are proud that we discuss issues as adults and not like petulant little children the liberals are.

There are hundreds more reasons why the republicans are proud of the advancements we have made over years, but you're not interested in hearing any of it. Just trying to egg on a fight, so....bye bye baby. Maybe in a few years when you grow up you can have an adult conversation with the rest of us.

Excellent post :) - ZvilleMT

I hadn't realized you trended left socially (we have a lot of friends who are economically conservative but left socially). With that and our shared tremendous reverence for the Constitution, we have an enormous middle ground to meet on.

In fact, I thought the middle section of your post, this part:

"...conservatives have not lost our pride and confidence in being a conservative. We are proud to belong to the party of forward thinkers. Of men and women of all races, religions (or no religions). We are proud that we are the party that helped abolish slavery, that we are the party of Washington, Lincoln, Martin Luther King, and other fine republican leaders... We are proud that we stand for the rights of ALL men and women and children. We are proud that we hold the constitution dear to our hearts and don't try and change it. We are proud because we understand the simple concept of not spending more than you take in and that the republican party actually comes up with ideas for balancing a budget. We are proud that we discuss issues as adults..."

was excellent. The rest of it, unfortunately, derailed your point and wrecked your credibility. That's a shame. One can't throw around phrases like "hate filled" and go on to use terms like "petulant little children" if one expects rational discussion and sharing of ideas.

We're here listening; talk to us. What do you have to lose?

The OP made a lovely plea for the "rational conservative voices we need so badly." That sounds like respect and admiration, to me. It sounded like the verbal olive branch we all could use. Heck.

No, it sounded more like sarcasm as usual. Mocking conservatives - is what this board is about lately.

Many of us, from both sides of the question, have proven over and over again that we're open and capable of rational, respectful debate as befits adults.

We all step over the line at times; we provoke and are provoked. That doesn't mean it's impossible to have meaningful conversation here, though. Lashing out is the equivalent of waving a red flag in front of a bull. Restraint in that area will serve all of us well.

"THE DEBT, DEFICIT AND DEBT CEILING

Don’t Blame Obama for Bush’s 2009 Deficit
by Republican Daniel J. Mitchell of the Conservative Cato Institute

Barack Obama has lowest spending record of any recent president

You will often hear critics say that Bush left office with a $454 billion deficit. That was the deficit at the end of 2008 (12/31/2008). Then what accounts for the period from the end of December until the President is sworn into office in late January? Any calculation that begins when President Obama took office or at the end of 2009 (because the President had been in office for a year), is just flat-out wrong.

Here’s how it works...the fiscal year is from October 1 through September 30th. So a President governs for his first 9 months under the budget of the preceding administration.

At the end of the Bush fiscal year, September 30, 2009, the deficit was $1,417,121.

Obama’s first fiscal year, September 30, 2010, the deficit was $1,294,090. The deficit went down!

Obama’s second fiscal year September 30, 2011, the deficit was $1,298,614.

Obama’s third fiscal year August 31, 2012 (latest available), the deficit was $1,164,373.

Trade Deficit Goes Down, Budget Deficit and Unemployment drop

Debt Reduction

Most government spending occurs automatically, without any action by the Congress or the President. Since fiscal year 1957, the amount of debt held by the federal government has increased each year. The ability to expand the economy has direct impact on the ability to bring about debt reduction, so I've included the following chart.

I am adding the following charts for further clarification.

Balancing the Budget

President Clinton balanced the budget, giving the government a surplus. Not one single Republican in either house voted for the balanced budget.

Only 5 (five) current Presidents have governed with a surplus. They were all Democrats!

more people who echo your sentiments. Your statements about accepting all races and religions, being a party of forward thinkers and standing up for the rights of everyone are all things I can get behind. I don't care about communists because they are so desperately marginalized. Even ultra liberals like myself don't really like communists most of the time. As for Washington, Lincoln and MLK they are all personal heroes of mine. Especially MLK, who was repeatedly accused of being a communist because of his various statements against unregulated capitalism and the oppression of the poor by the rich.

As I said in a post lower down, I miss classic Republicans. There was a time when despite our disagreements, I would rate both parties as equally intelligent, respectful and honorable. However, I feel that the modern Republican Party is now in the hands of "petulant children." Don't get me wrong, there isn't a day that goes by that some Democratic politician doesn't disappoint me in their words or actions. Both parties actual representatives are corrupt morons.

I just don't see much of the Republican Party you talk about and I miss it. Of course, part of that is the squeaky wheel gets the oil and the squeaky congressman that gets the media attention. I would like to see the Republicans come up with a balanced budget. Lately, all you ever see are things like the Ryan budget where you see a huge ballooning of deficit and all social programs are gone.

As for acceptance, I see a party of intolerance. A party of self-deportation or forced relocation, a party of denying equal rights because of sexual preference, a party that takes the rights of invertebrate human tissue lumps over those of adult women, a party that feels the hardest working should pay the most and the richest and laziest should get welfare, a party who puts the second amendment before the first amendment, a party who sees obstructionism as an end to itself rather than a path to compromise and a party who thinks Christianity is the only legitimate belief system.

The Republican Party I see, especially when I'm watching Fox, is one that tramples on the ideals to speak of. I really do hope you speak out against this in the same way I often have to take Obama and other Democrats to task for the decisions I disagree with. It falls on the rational members of both parties to keep the crazy quotient down.

I hope you don't look at my criticism of your party as personal criticism towards you. In the same vein, don't look at any single member of the Democratic Party or even the party itself as representing me. I'm only voting for them because at least for the time being they fall closest in line with my own beliefs. Until I become president, I probably won't be happy (and then I'll be truly miserable.)
