Lost my best little buddy...

Posted: May 11, 2017

Just grieving the passing of my little Yorkie, Sparky.  He was 13 years old and died of multiple-organ failure and hypothermia.  I feel awful that I didn't treat his final illness seriously...just thought he was being picky about his food and would perk up quickly.  I tried to force-feed him with a syringe (no needle, of course), because I knew he wasn't getting any nutrition.  The first vet tried to treat him with steroids and antibiotics, and the second vet said he had two days at most, one day most likely, and I chose to end his suffering.  Thirteen years is a long time, though, and I was lucky to have him.

Sad, Sad.  My house feels so empty.

So sorry to hear of your loss - xx

Our beloved pets leave paw prints on our hearts. You gave him a good life, and I'm sure he knew you loved him very much.

So sorry - ?

The first response says it all. So sorry for your loss.

Even when we know it's for the best, it's so hard to make the decision to end their suffering. I cried for almost a week trying to make that decision, but knew that I had to. It went very quickly and he was at peace.

Thoughts and prayers going your way for comfort.

I understand a bit how you feel - TXmt

So sorry you have had to go through this. I have been in your shoes a few times, and it is so hard not to second-guess what you think you should have done, but you did the best you could with the knowledge you had at the time. He was loved and now he is at peace. When you are ready, there are other little doggies that also need a loving home. They won't replace him, but for me that is about the only thing that can help with the grief...

Love and prayers for you. Its so hard to know when they are - really sick. I am so sorry for your loss SM

I lost my beloved little girl about 4 months ago, first I noticed she gradually but fairly rapidly lost strength and motor function in her back legs then she lost her sight, and stopped wanting to eat. I had to end her suffering, nothing more I could do to help her. Vet said a heart murmur, but the blindness, the loss of function could have been diabetic. Sadly, as an MT, I didnt have money for multiple diagnostic lab tests to even find out what was wrong to ease my own mind.

It always hurts this badly, its never easy. All my love to you.

When my little Sparky became ill, I had in mind the maximum I could afford to restore him to health...I knew that more than that would be impossible. My old vet used to recommend extravagant treatments (like joint replacements with months of physical therapy, laser cataract surgery) that I could scarcely have afforded for mySELF on an MT salary, let alone my little dog. I hated to think of a limit but had to be realistic; after all, he was 13 years old. This vet said that the only alternative was to put him in the ICU and give him fluids, but there was no guarantee of relief and most certainly not a return to his normal robust self. She speculated that he had only one day left.

I guess my fear is that I wasn't gentle enough to him in his last week. Oh, if I could only turn back the clock. I would cuddle him and speak softly. I tried so hard to get him to move, but he must have been in awful pain. I hope he understands now that I just...wanted him to get well. :(

So sorry to hear of Sparky's passing. - LoveDoggies

I had a Yorkie growing up. Her name was Trina Marie. She was a little sweetie. Maybe she can meet up with Sparky in Doggie Heaven.

I hope all of our thoughts and prayers here will help to ease your sorrow.

So sorry to hear about your loss. Making that decision was not easy, but do not second guess yourself on your decision. You did the best you could with the knowledge you had at that time. Sometimes you do not realize how sick they are because their symptoms mimic other illnesses. For 13 years, you gave him a wonderful home with the love and care he deserved. Take pride in that. What matters is the fact that Sparky knew he was loved and that you did the best you could.

We lost our furry son to cancer back in 2015. We were hoping to not have to make that decision for him, which we did not in the end. I also have regrets/doubts in the back of my mind since he went naturally at home, but I know without a doubt that he went on his own terms. This is not to say we were not monitoring his quality of life and would make that decision should it become obvious that we had to. Losing our companions is never easy since they leave their paw prints on our hearts, but our lives are much richer for it. After ours passed I thought that I would not get another since I did not want the pain again, but 2 months later and a little 6-month-old black bundle of fur came into our lives and we feel so blessed to have her. She eased the pain of our grieving. Please consider eventually adopting, or even fostering, another. If that is not an option for you, maybe volunteering at the local animal shelter to walk dogs or even just spending some time with them would allow you to get your furry fix.

My heart goes out to you. Sending you thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry - sm

Dogs are truly wonderful blessings from God.

I have had to make that decision 3 times as well, and it is always heart-wrenching and filled with uncertainty. However, it is also filled with the certainty of the love we have for our dear little companions. As much as Sparky was a blessing to you, you were such a blessing to him for loving him, giving him a good home, and doing your very best for him.

Rest In Peace - Sparky

Prayers coming your way. My heart always breaks in two when I lose them. It is the memory of their little face looking at you with such love that is beyond words. Feel better and have joy in Sparky's memory.

Thanks so much for all your responses. The vet called me on Saturday and asked if I'd like to take a walk with her or get a cup of coffee to talk about Sparky. This is small town, so she may do this sort of thing regularly. I bawled like a baby, and she listened and tried to comfort me.

Life does go on, I guess, but it's sweeter for the memories and so very quiet.

It's true that we agonize over when to do this sort of thing, but I could see how very sick he was, and the vet said he had at most 2 days to live. That sort of made my decision easier. His decline was over the course of only 1 week, so the whole thing was sudden and unexpected. Just a week before, we took a 1-mile walk, and he was as energetic as always. In case you may be wondering -- no, he didn't eat anything on the side of the road..it was always necessary to supervise him closely.

My heart breaks for you. I have been through this all my life. Each time I say I will not get another because the pain is too great when they must leave. May I suggest: Wait a few weeks or months then check out a local animal shelter. Rescues are so in need of mercy and bring such joy. If you phone first and tell them kind of what you're looking for, they'll probably bend over backwards to find just the right one. I have researched...Dogs DO go to Heaven!

Lost A FriendJan 14, 2014
I wonder if this has happened to anyone? I really need to vent about this, so if this long, sorry. Last year about June, my best friend moved across country. We used to be close like sisters. It was the kind of relationship that if we didn't speak for a couple of months or so, one of us would call and it was like we had spoken just yesterday. ...

It Seems To Me Sensible Conservatives Have Lost Their PrideJan 24, 2013
go did go wrong for a couple of decades, letting themselves be swept farther right without scoping out the crowd they found themselves part of and where it was going, or why. That did cost us all badly, but what happened when we lost their stabilizing contribution just shows how much we need them to be good conservatives, to not sit quietly out in some chastened "independent-land" while extremists continue to dominate the discussion.
