I've lost 30 pounds - on purpose!

Posted: Mar 14, 2012

I work from home and not a lot of social interaction, so no one has seen that I have lost weight - so I'm posting it here (if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it theory) so I know it's real :)  I started out with the Atkins plan and now I have switched to a low-cal, low-carb, no-processed food diet.  I'm even making my own stock to make homemade soups.  It is a lot of work for just one person, but I am enjoying the weight loss and feel proud of myself.  This is the easy weight to lose, though.  I haven't started exercising yet.  I only wanted to focus on changing the way I eat and then add exercise so I don't overload myself with too much too soon and end up quitting all my efforts.  I have another 70 to go.  It's going to get harder soon, but I feel ready!

;

That is amazing! - Wish I had your strength

I wanted to try Atkins, but the thought of giving up bread and potatoes kills me. I have been walking for a few months thought, between 4 to 6 miles and usually 4 to 5 days a week. Then I added on 20 minutes of cardio on each of my walking days and bumped it up to 40 minutes, but then I injured my arm and have been unable to do the cardio workouts. Its been almost a month and I know I have gained again, and only had just started losing, so I really need to change my diet.

Feel free to share more tips on here, and some recipes. I will take all the advice and help you can share. I really have a hard time losing it and can only dream of losing 30 pounds.

Congrats!!!

You have to get rid of the bread and potatoes - Sorry to say

I posted down below before I read your post. I'm the one that eliminated all grain. There is a school of thought that says that the human body was not evolved to eat grains and that ingestion of grains leads to bloating, inflammation and all kinds of interesting things.

If you can, get a copy of a book called "The Wheat Belly." The name of the author escapes me right now. His theory is that grains are so genetically modified they resemble nothing of what we had even 100 years ago and because of that genetic modification they are very, very bad for you.

I didn't eat much bread, but I used tortillas pretty regularly and bags of potato chips or tortilla chips were my best friends. When I cut out the grains, I lost 10 pounds without even trying. And, not to get too graphic, but without all of that stuff clogging up the works, so to speak, my digestive system cleaned itself out in the course of a couple of days. I'm not sure where it all came from. TMI, I know, but still.

I dream about scones occasionally, but I know that eating one scone won't be worth how bad I feel and it definitely won't be worth the change in the scale tomorrow. Potatoes have always been a trigger for me. I can eat one good, meal-sized potato and the scale would tell me I gained 10 pounds the next day.

Also, what works for me is keeping an eye on calories. I'm not obsessive about counting them, but I am careful. I try not to go crazy with the raw cashews because they are more calorie dense for the quantity, for example.

Lunch is almost always a big salad with some sort of protein - chicken or steak chopped up - and tomatoes, some raw sunflower seeds, maybe some black olives. I might make a taco salad and have browned ground beef on top of a bed of salad with tomatoes and cheese and salsa. Non fat greek yogurt is wonderful with honey, vanilla, cinnamon, and walnuts. That is breakfast a lot of days.

Sorry to be so wordy. I know you were responding to the OP, but thought I'd chime in with what is working for me so far.

Sorry to say..... - Elmo

but I have to disagree and so do a few good doctors who work with people to prevent and reverse diseases such as diabetes. I do agree in the aspect that the grains we have today are modified and, for that reason alone, should at times be avoided but organic grains are good for us and help us lose weight....not gain. Starches are GOOD for us, not bad and that goes for the "oh so scary" potato. I have to laugh when people talk about potatoes putting weight on them. It's not the bread and potatoes...it's what you put on top of your bread and potatoes....butter, sour cream, mayo, jelly, etc. It's the fillings that cause the weight gain and the poor bread and potato take the rap. Who eats a slice of whole wheat bread plain?? Who eats a potato with nothing on top?? I personally find that red meat is what puts the pounds on me. I eat tons of starchy foods...rice, potatoes, corn and lots of fruit, veggies and beans and a few nuts. I never worry about gaining weight. You may lose weight watching your "portions" but I can eat till I'm full regardless of portion sizes and still never gain any weight. Red meat and dairy are big NO-NOs simply because they're unhealthy to begin with. If we all ate what was healthy for the human body....plant-based foods... we MTs would be out of work because we'd all be healthy and wouldn't be constantly in the doctor's office.
Not the toppings - Had someone say that before
[ In Reply To ..]
One pound is equivalent to 3500 calories. No amount of toppings on a potato equal 35,000 calories which is what I would have had to ingested for my scale to tell me I gained 10 pounds in one day.

I was severely insulin resistant. What that means is that my body was not reacting to any starches like they should, thus the weight gain from eating one potato.

The conventional wisdom out there that we must have grains in our diet is, I firmly believe, why this country is so overweight. The USDA food pyramid had grains and starches as the primary food for 25 years. It's not a coincidence that in 25 years of following that, America has become a bloated mess.

The person below mentioned the paleo way of eating, also referred to as primal. It's what I'm following and has what helped me lost 14 pounds in one month so far.

Everyone is different, but I am firmly on the bandwagon that grains and potatoes are bad, bad, bad for you, and I have NEVER met a potato I didn't like. It's what's working for me and I will happily share that with anyone else who is struggling to see if it works for them as well.
I know a doctor - Elmo

out in California who uses starches (potatoes, rice, corn) to help people reverse and prevent diabetes and lots of other diseases. He has a large clientele. He would disagree with you heartily and so do I. We are not all that different. The only difference is we all think the foods we like must be good for us. I do agree partly about the grains because in the recent years they have become so modified and damaged. Grains were eaten in the Bible, long before the Paleo period, so I refuse to believe they are bad for us in that respect. Our country is overweight because of the soda, candy, chips, cookies, red meat, butter, cheese and ice cream that everyone loves....not potatoes and grains.
Yep, if insulin resistant, very sensitive to carbs (sm) - One Diet Does Not Fit All
[ In Reply To ..]
Some people are more sensitive to carbs than others. Depends, in part, on your metabolic type but also on your insulin sensitivity. If you are insulin resistant (me too), you are *definitely* sensitive to carbs. Potatoes are a double whammy if you also have an autoimmune disease, like me.

Some people do OK on a high carb/low fat diet. IRs definitely do not, however.

Regardless of carb level and meat/no meat, *everyone* will reap huge benefits from cutting out food from a box of any sort and avoiding canola oil and high-fructose corn syrup like the plague.
I completely agree! - LoadsToGo

I only lost a minimal amount of weight while on Atkins. I did feel myself go into ketosis to burn fat instead of carbs, but saw only a minimal amount of weight loss - say 5 to 10 pounds at best, and then nothing. What I did feel, though, was no more naps, no more sleepiness in the middle of the day, no more foggy brain.

What I did in those first few days was to replace the missing carbs with huge amounts of fat (that is what they promote). I basically went on an all-fat diet diet to fill in for the cravings I had for missing the carbs.

It was not until I switched to a no-processed food, low-fat diet that I began to see results. No mac and cheese in a box, no soups in a can.

You know, I grew up with parents who took one cow a year from my grandparents' farm, so lots of beef was a symbol of wealth and status. I do not restrict myself to meat; I just restrict high fat products and processed food. No more packaged products other than canned tomato and canned stock if I am out of homemade.

I have found a good balance between the different promoted diet plans and it works for me :)
I disagree somewhat... - Elmo
[ In Reply To ..]
I think most of us become "sensitive" because of a bad diet most of our lives. If you're sensitive to the sugar in potatoes, you will be sensitive to the sugar in fruit, milk and any other food with sugar. Many of these foods are good for us and doing without them causes more harm than good. I do agree that foods in a box and oil are bad news.
I *am* sensitive to the sugar in fruit, milk, etc! - 80 down
[ In Reply To ..]
And so is anyone else who is insulin resistant, for that matter.

Again, not everyone is IR.

As I stated below, I've intentionally taken a break from losing weight because it's a head trip. How I put the brakes on was by eating more high-carb fruits and dairy.

Did you look at the pictures I linked or at the site I referenced below?

leave healthy foods out of our diet for many years, we can become sensitive or allergic to them. It doesn't mean we should keep doing it. The nutrients and phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables are important and keep us healthy. Most people these days are allergic or sensitive to anything healthy but it's job security so I can't complain too much.

Low carb - mg

The low carb diet is the easiest I've ever followed, and I'd recommend it to anyone. You get fast results which motivates you to keep going and loads of energy, ta' boot!

Here was my thought when I tried Atkins: I am not on a diet. But I will try the guidelines to see how it feels. If it works, great! If it doesn't, well, there are good points that benefit me :)

I did give up potatoes and bread for a couple of weeks and OMG I was grumpy and I was unhappy, but after the first 3 days or so, it really did get better. I didn't talk to anyone for those 3-4 days, I just indured. And then it got better. I stopped feeling the need to take naps and that was HUGE for me!!

I think no matter what guidelines you take at first, for me, I needed to find what worked for me. Last weekend, I had pizza. A whole 12 inch pizza. But it was a supreme with lots of veggies. They counter the bread, right, wink? wink?

I know I can't do that forever, but I know that in the short-term, it made me long-term successful. Make sense?

I also thought about Alton Brown's advice for weight loss (I love the show Good Eats). He has tons of black boards with suggestions. I just took some of them - mainly eliminate processed foods - and combined them with Atkins and Weight Watchers - and it fit for me.

A dozen years ago when I wanted to lose 25 pounds (I'm choking on that now), I chose a low-fat diet (I ate anything as long as I stayed below 10 grams of fat a day). I think diets are great when they work for you in real life.

More recently to gain that 100 pounds, I found the link below and it was honest with me. I *had* to drop some calories. What calories I dropped were up to me, right? I was shocked to think I was eating an extra 700 per day. So that has been what I've been doing; figuring out what was best for me.

If you want to, I know you can...and you can be in control of how you do it :)

Congratulations!! - keep at; you can do it : )

30 pounds is a great accomplishment. Good job.

I am considered morbidly obese and on 02/10/12 I stopped eating all grains. No wheat, rice, flour, etc. I had been doing a lot of reading on insulin resistance and all of the signs pointed to me, plus my mother was diabetic and my older sister (also heavy) was just diagnosed as being diabetic. Sis was a good inspiration for me. She recognized finally that there were new rules to follow for her eating and she lost 30 pounds in about 6 months. Neither of us wanted to end up like our mom and dead at 72 from poor choices.

So, like you I am on a very low carb diet. I'm not counting carbs or anything like that, just nothing that comes from a grain of any sort, so the carbs I get are from fruits and veg. Salad is my friend!!!

I've lost 14 pounds now in a month and only started exercising again about a week ago.

Whole, fresh, unprocessed foods and more calories expended than we take in. Yes, it can be done. Go team!

So proud of you!! - LoadsToGo

You and I started on our journey so close to each other!! Like you, my sister is challenged with diabetes - and other health issues. When we were growing up, people said we were twins. People thought I was my sister even though we were almost 6 years apart! She had always been slimmer because her bones were slimmer, but then she ended up heavier. When I look in the mirror, I see her, not me, but that is conflicting because I know who I am.

I am so, so proud of you. I've been thinking of walking for a while and or using an elliptical. I am so embarassed about my weight, I want to exercie in my home. Please share what your are doing!!

I have an elliptical machine - that I like

[ In Reply To ..]
I hate gyms, health clubs, etc. I get easily intimidated by the fit people. I splurged a number of years ago and bought a really high end elliptical machine. I go through periods where I am really good about using it and then periods where I don't because I essentially hate exercise.

I like being able to walk into the next room and use it, though. The key for me is to have something really engrossing on the iPod to watch so I don't watch the minutes count down on the timer.

There are some good ellipticals on the market that are reasonably priced and you can always find them on Craig's list as well.
My friend got one recently - LoadsToGo
[ In Reply To ..]
She is diabetic and has bad knees and swears by her ellipitcal machine.

If I only had a few pound to go (less then 40), I would not mind a local gym. I was always what people said "athletic" and did not have weight issues, so now, I feel intimitated by my excess weight. I do have joint issues and my friend tells me that an elliptical is the way to go. Like you, I like the idea of using it in my own home. I've been looking at them. I hope I can find one I can get and then commit myself to using!

Congrats to us all! I'm down 80 on Paleo, reversed borderline diabetes (sm) - MTontheGo

[ In Reply To ..]
Paleo is meat, fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds = anything that existed in nature before the advent of agriculture (grains). Think: hunter-gatherer. Can you pluck it from a tree, pull it from the ground, hunt it, or fish it? As someone else pointed out, many people are beginning to believe that grains (along with the industrial seed oils, such as canola oil, and high fructose corn syrup--both made from genetically modified corn) are behind what is making us so sick and fat. We are not genetically adapted to eating grains, dairy, or processed sugar, as we did not evolve on them. We are putting the wrong kind of fuel in our car and then wondering why it isn't running well. If me and my friends are any indication, the theory is most definitely true.

I used to be borderline everything and was having all sorts of problems with LUPUS, chronic inflammation, rosacea, GERD, headaches, foggy brain, depression, listlessness, lots of mucus and ear itchiness and skin rashes. I was feeling so badly that I truly wondered if I had cancer. Turns out it was just processed food and grains. Longtime GERD -- the kind that would make me sit straight up in my bed with acid in my mouth -- was gone *completely* in 72 hours. GERD is usually the first thing to disappear, everyone seems to say. Following right behind that is the frequent headaches.

Oh, I could write a book and go on and on about it all, but, yeah, you can go to marksdailyapple.com and look at all the before/after photos and read the "share a triumph" thread and be amazed.

I've been taking a break from the weight loss to allow my brain and emotions to catch up with the slim(merish~) new pants size (down 5 sizes, into petites again (OK, so the largest of petites, but, hey, that label has a "P" on it!), but now I'm ready to take it to another level.

The awesome thing about this is: It's not a diet at all and is easily maintainable. This is the first time ever I've lost a lot of weight and have not gained it back. I don't feel deprived. In fact, I feel so lucky that I get to eat the best food ever, really yummy stuff. I'm eating way more fresh fruit and vegetables than I ever did before... and I used to be a vegetarian! :)

my doctor e-mailed me excitedly to tell me I had the best labs she had EVER seen. :)

Y'all, I was really, really sick before, with pretty bad labs. A 40-year-old woman's lab work should not look like that... borderline diabetic, inflammation markers through the roof, near critically low vitamin D level, hypertensive. My triglycerides alone went from 178 to 66.

on the "Paleo" diet except for one thing. Eat it if you can pluck it from a tree, pull it from the ground or hunt and fish it....without the use of a weapon. Fish you can actually catch pretty easy and all you have to do is throw them out of the water and they'll die. If you had to actually hunt your meat without the use of a gun, how much meat would you eat? I would say, next to none. That's why I believe most meat isn't good for us. In the Paleolithic period, there were only stone weapons so if you're eating red meat and even chicken/turkey, you're not really eating a paleo diet. I challenge you to try killing any animal, with the exception of fish, without the use of a modern weapon. This is the reason most of us are so sick and overweight today. If you had to actually kill your food instead of walking into a grocery store and picking it up and putting it in your cart, just how much meat would you eat? Think about it. Most of us don't think about it.

OMG! TY for your support!! - LoadsToGo

[ In Reply To ..]
You guys are so awesome! Thank you so very very much for your support!

I was never overweight until a few years ago when stress and hormonal changes and then surgeries caused me to pack on the pounds. I have to be honest, weight became a way of not dealing with the attention and I welcomed the gains (that's a hard one, isnt int?) to avoid focus on myself.

Gee, one sister said welcome to my side of life and the other said it's not healthy, you can do better. Nothing like pressure, eh?

I just couldn't do anthing about it when it was happening because I could not cope with all the stressors in my life. No health insurance. No demands on my clothing expense. I could hide away and no one saw what I was doing to myself. It was convenient. It was comfortable for the time being, but it just was not who I was. But here I am 100 pounds later.

If you read my original post and you have been supportive, oh my goodness, you have no idea how much I appreciate you right now. Thank you. Thank you so much!!!.

If you think potatoes control you, then give yourself permission to eat them every few days (goodness knows I have once I said I could!). I even made gravy this week after an absence of 6 weeks (can you tell I am southern?)

The comments or thoughts you send my way are just undescribly appreciated. I know the hard times are ahead of me because it will require more than just adjusting what I put in that pot on the stove. I will need to start exercising. I do not yet know what form of exercise will be my choice, but it is necessary. I think about when I was 11 and I loved, loved, loved swimming (without the weight I carry now, haha) and it is already feeling like summer.

Maybe I can do this :) If I can and you want to, join me!

Congratulations! - Alice

Way to go!
I've done pretty much the same thing, have lost 160 pounds so far. People tell me I'm crazy cause I refuse to eat junk food and turn down cake and cookies, but it's been worth it. It was a bit of an adjustment (sugar withdrawal) in the beginning, but it has now become a way of life.
I think the medical industry knows the secret to long-term weight loss, but just chooses to not reveal the truth. Dr. Atkins knew what he was talking about, IMHO...

One more thing - Alice

[ In Reply To ..]
Before the ATkins plan, I was on glyburide PLUS sliding-scale regular insulin injections. Within 2 days of giving up the bread, potatoes, cookies, anything high carb or junk, I no longer needed any medication. I no longer needed medications for hypertension. I'm over 60 and take no prescription drugs. I imagine that my weight loss put a slight dent in the pharmaceutical industry's profit margin...LOL.

My only regret is that I didn't figure this all out years ago, as I've been extremely overweight ever since childhood and was even given prescription diet pills at age 8. Life could have been so different.

Once again, Congratulations!! You sound like a very intuitive and intelligent, independent woman. Keep it up and it will get easier and better as time goes on. The positive impact that good health has on life in general is just tremendous!!

give up potatoes and bread which I love and are good for me to get the same results. I gave up putting butter on my potatoes. I gave up deep frying threm. I use them in soups and bake them in the oven without a lot of oil and they are better than any French fries I've ever had. I still eat bread but I use peanut butter and toppings that are good for me or eat it plain. I am 59 and don't take medications of any kind, don't have high blood sugar, or any other health problems and I still eat bread and potatoes. I'm gaining the same benefits as you without giving up foods I love and are good for me. Why suffer if you don't have to is my motto.

wow, Alice, you are a hero! - LoadsToGo

You are an inspiration :) It does not matter if you didn't figure it out years ago, you figured it out now and did something about it. You are remarkable!!

I cannot imagine the work and dedication to yourself to lose the weight you have. To anyone who said, no you must eat this or that, and you said no, I'm so proud of you!

Gee I wished you lived next to me and we could go to the pool together :)

I heard that even Bill Maher who strongly supports Obama admits that Obama is lost if he does not have a teleprompter in front of him and also speech material from which he can read and does not reallyl have to think about what he is saying.  Is that all it takes to be a president is a teleprompter?  LOL. ...

Words From A Father Who LostDec 19, 2012
Word's from a Father who lost his daughter in COLUMBINE 12 YEARS AGO!!Guess our national leaders didn't expect this. On Thursday, Darrell Scott, the father of... Rachel Scott, a victim of the Columbine High School shootings in Littleton, Colorado, was invited to address the House Judiciary Committee's subcommittee. It Seems To Me Sensible Conservatives Have Lost Their PrideJan 24, 2013
go did go wrong for a couple of decades, letting themselves be swept farther right without scoping out the crowd they found themselves part of and where it was going, or why. It's way past time for them to get over it and step up ...

Long Lost Friends...Apr 30, 2017
Have you ever lost touch with someone you used to know and really liked for a friend, but so many other things like career, family, etc., just made it difficult to get together very often until eventually those times became less and less? It happens, I know, probably all too often. I met a gal in college and we managed to stay in contact for only a few years before life just got so much more busy for the both of us. The years went by. Now, I'm feeling just terrible after finding out she bat ...
