I wish I could shake the feeling of waiting for

Posted: Jul 9, 2014

I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel very nervous with what's going on at our southern border, the upsurge in terrorism in Iraq and now the escalation of tensions and threats between Israel and the Palestinians.

;

I know what you mean. I live 10 minutes - concerned too

[ In Reply To ..]
away from the Murrieta Border Patrol and things are not good here. Our assemblywoman has written a letter to Gov Jerry Brown asking him for answers and to help the police force because most of the officers of Murrieta are at the border patrol instead of on the streets thus putting the city at risk and border patrol is not doing their job. I go to Wal-Mart and see protesters on the corner. Our city facebook page is all about this and even our pastor at our church talks about what is going on. It is very unnerving to say the least.

Stock market in a bubble - I think

[ In Reply To ..]
I think stock market is in a bubble. The Federal Reserve is keeping rates low in order to support the economy. In the process, it is inflating stock prices, thus creating a bubble.

It's a matter of time. China is dumping the dollar - I think. That's why so many

[ In Reply To ..]
people are prepping, whether it be with food, jewelry, gold, or anything to hedge against inflation.

I actually bought a boat load of toilet paper, protein powder, - Band-Aids, bottled water,

[ In Reply To ..]
lots of canned food, peanut butter is another good prep item, tuna fish, things with a long shelf life.
I get thumbs down for prepping? Wow. - NM

My DH and I do the same thing you do, and - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
we also stockpile foods that don't expire, as well as lots and lots of water.

I have no idea for the life of me why someone would "dislike" your comment about prepping. There is a very real chance that you may need these things in the event of a crisis in this country.

And I think we're only a heartbeat away from that actually happening.

I'm glad you're doing what you're doing and that we're doing what we're doing.

Better to be safe than sorry!
What to know something even more strange? - Sure

I have no idea for the life of me why so many people on this board seem to be hung up on whether people "like" or "dislike" their posts.

Who cares? What is this concern with likes/dislikes? Is the political board somehow not feeding some need for good approval ratings?
Unfortunately, a lot of us in urban areas live in - apartments that are too small - sm

even for our own everyday things, let alone any kind of an emergency stockpile. Here in CA, earthquake, fire and tsunami (on the coast) are the most imminent threats, although in far northeastern CA there are also 2 dormant volcanoes. I guess drought is another problem, which we're currently having.

The best thing lots of us can do in those situations is just keep a clear head and do the best we can to respond to whatever situations arise. I live in a small town where fracked oil trains roll through every day... on a stretch of track with a history of prior derailments. There are oil refineries on either side of town. If a fracked oil car explodes, we don't stand a chance: We'll be crispy critters. Still, I can't live my life worrying about it. Today is a good day, so I can't ruin this good day by worrying about what tomorrow might bring.

For the drought, I conserve water, and plant drought-tolerant plants. (Love that cactus, salvia, and succulents!)

For earthquakes I used to have an emergency backpack in my car, but the car got broken into, and it was stolen. Haven't replaced it yet, but will get around to it someday, since it's helpful in most situations, not just earthquakes.

Matches, candles, and a BBQ means you can cook food and boil water. Sleeping bags are portable, useful for other things (like very cold nights when the heater doesn't work), and other life/comfort-saving things.

Just the normal amount of canned food in my cupboards, which I rotate through and eat, but I don't go overboard with a month's supply, or anything like that. And some spare pet food. Enough to get me & the pets by for a week maybe, until any immediate threat has passed.

If a threat is local, then of course there are friends and family out of town that can help. In a major nationwide calamity, all bets are off. In those cases, a lot depends upon location, and plain old luck.

Unfortunately, the more immediate threat many of us face happens every single day: Not enough money. Crummy job, or no job. Illness or injuries. Foreclosure. Healthcare costs. Paying the rent or the mortgage every month. So although I have a certain amount of worry about what *could* happen in the future in the way of war, flood, disaster, plague, famine, yada-yada, more realistically, I have to face the day-to-day problems first. The toilet that won't flush properly. The aging cat with health issues. Next month's rent with no job and no UE. How to keep getting chronic medications, yet avoiding having to make an expensive doctor visit in order to obtain a refill. Keeping the plants alive with highly restricted water use. Figuring out which costs more - driving further away for cheaper gas, or buying more expensive gas close to home.

One of the best things anyone can do to be "disaster-ready" is to get to know your neighbors (easier said than done in the city), and become friends with, or at least tolerant of, one another. That way help and resources can be pooled in an emergency situation, and of course there's more safety in numbers. So your neighbors are likely your best chance of being okay if a worst-case situation were to happen.
Thanks, you too. I forgot to add flashlights to - my list, batteries, candles,
[ In Reply To ..]
the long kind of matches that you get on Amazon.

Best to you!
i've been doing that - for a few years

yep. i also loaded up on dollar-store soap, toothpaste, etc. when "keepables" are on sale, i get a few extra.

empty bleach bottles are good for storing water.

to prep I would be right up there with the best of them.
I have backpacks, blankets, many sleeping bags, - cards in case the grid goes
[ In Reply To ..]
down, but the most important is food. I have lots of beans, oatmeal, rice, things like that.
Well, at least you're ready for an earthquake, but - civil war in the US would last alot longer.
[ In Reply To ..]
(I'm talking about the haves vs the have-nots, here.) Still, if it comes down to that, I have no problem with raiding some 1 percenter's pantry or siphoning gas from his luxury Mercedes SUV, if that's what it takes to survive.

This is kind of related about privatizing - Social Security like Chile,

[ In Reply To ..]
they seem to be doing very well.

It's always something. All the TV coverage is - only serving to make me immune to it.

[ In Reply To ..]
I refuse to live my life worrying that something "might happen" here. It will. Periodically, bad stuff happens. But I refuse to worry about something there's no control over. By doing that, we'd be giving terrorists what they want.

I don't completely understand the reasoning behind one country sending thousands of kids across the border into another country illegally, so I can't comment on that one too much, other than to say if unescorted kids are walking across our borders, then obviously someone in charge of securing the borders is dropping the ball. But I'll let them worry about that. I have to worry about next month's rent, and how I'm going to pay for this week's dental exam.

As for Israel and Palestine, they've both had a bee up their butts about each other since the beginning of time. Why we support Israel is beyond me. I say pull out of there, and let them have at it. Good luck to them both, and may the best country win.

I couldn't agree with you more... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
...especially the part about Israel and why we support them. WE need the money we give to other countries.

Why can't we get our OWN people out of poverty before being the "guardian" of the world? It only proves that we're the planet's slumlords, given that a lot of people in this country ARE living in third world circumstances!

I agree, and all the aid we send to Palestine, - the funds will go where

[ In Reply To ..]
they’ve ALWAYS gone, private Swiss bank accounts for the top PLO leadership.
Charlie Rangel would this chump change, - all taxpayer dollars are
[ In Reply To ..]
chump change to him.

We have a history of supporting Israel because they - have the same Western ideals

[ In Reply To ..]
of self rule based on Judeo-Christian principles. Before I get into a discussion with anyone about this I always ask if you think Israel has a right to exist.

As far as your other point, you do have control of stuff that happens, borders, etc. That's what America is all about. The government works for you, not the other way around. They are not kings.

I like this quote by Golda Meir, no matter what - your stance is...

“We can forgive the Arabs for killing our children. We cannot forgive them for forcing us to kill their children. We will only have peace with the Arabs when they love their children more than they hate us.”

Why did Jewish settlers set fire to a Palestinian boy? Why did they feel compelled to escalate the violence? Or more specifically, who told them to do it?
I'm not going to defend that, but you can't reason with - people who think you have
[ In Reply To ..]
no right to exist. There are families in Israel, both Jewish and Palestinian, who work together and talk and live together. There are Palestinians in the Knesset.

It's the leaders and extremists who cause the problems.

[ In Reply To ..]
In the mean time, ISIS is a threat to Israel. If it formulates as a state, it will be hostile to Israel and no doubt will obtain scores of ballistic missiles capable of doing grave harm, to both Jews and Palestinians.
I think it starts with children. Little children don't - hate, they are taught to
[ In Reply To ..]
hate.

Ahh Israel - Capitalism

[ In Reply To ..]
I think you may be confusing the excuse of Judeo-Christian principles with Capitalism and control.

Israel may have a right to exist, somewhere, but they don't have the rights they claim to. The U.S. supports them so strongly due to heavy Jewish interests (money) here in the U.S. which all entangles itself into the political process here.

I think many of us do. I read on another board (sm) - Abby

someone was wondering why all her co-workers and even some family members seemed to be in "bad moods" lately, or "snappish." I think this is why. We're pretty much assured that the worst is yet to come. It's inevitable, and may I add, also by design.

The tension between Israel and the Palestinians bothers me. I prayed so hard that the 3 teenagers would be found alive. Cannot believe that much hatred exists anywhere. Nervous, too.

I've lived a long time, and in that time I've learned three things: 1.  Conservatives are right - about some things. 2.  Liberals are right - about some things. 3.  There's an awful lot about the world that we just don't know for certain. I'm going to make a wild guess here, and you tell me if I'm wrong.  The guess consists of a premise and an issue. PREMISE:  You are a committed "conservative" or "liberal". Feeling Sorry For MyselfDec 07, 2011
So, it's been a really rough 6 months for my family (such as it is). We have lost an uncle, best friend, another friend, father, a dog (16 years old), a cat (15 years old) and a bird (28 years old).  Never mind all the "fun" of being an MT.  After sitting in this grief/pity party for ourselves, my DH and I decided that celebrating Christmas was just too much to bear. After much thought, I decided to check out this website I found and now instead of sitting around feeling out of so ...

Look at all the people who have been "mentors" in Ovomits life. A fanatic religious man, a communist who influenced him as a mentor at age 9 on - my feeling is that this man has been raised, schooled and groomed throughout his lifetime by people who wanted him in charge to destroy this country so the U.S. is no longer a force to be reckoned with. He care nothing for the legal citizens in this country (probably not being one himself), ignores the will of the American people to push is own agend ...

Feeling Sad About ThisDec 11, 2014
I know a lot of people, myself included, who at various times in our lives have made the comment they wish Christmas was over.  I am sad to say this year is the first year I have no "Christmas feeling" whatsoever, and I don't want to acknowledge it at all.  I am struggling both financially and emotionally picking up a few gifts for just a handful of people, just because I know they are buying for me.  I have been through the worst 18 months of my life, and it has taken a trem ...

Are You Feeling The Gas Pinch?Apr 20, 2011
I average only 14 gallons of gas per month.  At $3.70 a gallon, that is over $51 a month.  I walk my child to school.  I combine trips.  It isn't unusual for my car not to move only one day a week, and I still find it hard to accept the cost of adding gas to my car.  Forget about being in a relationship - it's too expensive!  My cost to telecommute to work is less than $40 a month for my internet service although costs for electricity are probably higher t ...

Every once in awhile I go on Ebay and just search for "medical transcription" items.  I've found good buys in the past on various items (electronic spellcheckers, foot pedals, headphones, etc). Okay, this is going to sound REALLY stupid and childish and I hope after a long week you  get a laugh from this.  I can't tell my dear sweet hubbie because he meant good, but I have to tell someone.  He did the grocery shopping today.  He comes home and I see a container of mint ice cream (I gag thinking of it, but its his favorite), so I'm so excited he bought ice cream.  Been in the mood for a bowl of ice cream.  I keep emptying the bags putting food awa ...

For Cat Lovers, Feeling GuiltyJun 04, 2013
I just found out my 2nd cat in 10 years likely has a cryptococcal fungal infection.  The 1st one I did the whole treatment, surgery, biopsy, blood titers, fluconazole (150 bucks a month for a year), cost me over $2000.  She got better, but about 6 months later, it came back and I could not afford to treat her anymore.  I put all that cost on my credit cards. Well fast forward, I now have another cat with the same thing.  Saw the vet (different one) and he wants to do a biops ...

Why We're Still Waiting On The Yelpification Of Healthcare.Oct 21, 2012
"While power has indeed shifted into the hands of the consumer when it comes to buying a car or choosing a restaurant, this revolution -- what Rothschild terms "Yelpification" -- hasn't, well, revolutionized health care.
