Feeling nostalgic

Posted: Aug 12, 2013

Every once in awhile I go on Ebay and just search for "medical transcription" items.  I've found good buys in the past on various items (electronic spellcheckers, foot pedals, headphones, etc).

For some reason, when I ran the search today and was looking through the items, I started feeling all warm and fuzzy and nostalgic for the "good old days."  The days about 20 years ago when I was first learning medical transcription (in-house and on the job), and everything was exciting and new and the possibilities were endless.

I don't normally get the warm fuzzies over much of anything, so I was pretty taken aback that just looking at Ebay items for medical transcription made me feel a bit...well, I guess depressed, for lack of a better word.

Does anyone here have anything in particular that triggers a nostaglic feeling?  Something that just randomly, inexplicably takes you back to a particular memory?

Several things, in fact. One is the particular color and direction of the light in mid-August. It brings up memories of going back to school. When I see it, I smell crayons.

what a sweet sentiment! - thanks for sharing

Smelling crayons - Old Pro

always makes me smile and makes me wistful for kindergarten. I think the joy of crayons is what brought me back to coloring at age 70!

It is okay to call me a weirdo for this, - but...

you know the white potatoes in a can? When the smell of those potatoes heating up fills a kitchen, it takes me back to my pre-teen years at my granddad and aunt's house. Those potatoes were usually on the menu on weekends. Just imagine up to 20 cousins and I running in and out of the house, up and down the streets, causing headaches for the adults. Ah, to be so carefree again.

Burning leaves - sm - me

I found the library when I was in the 4th grade and I used to walk once a week to exchange books and I always remember the smell of the leaves burning in October and I would be walking to the library to get the next 3 Nancy Drew mysteries (limit 2). I would be so excited anticipating my next 3 books and couldn't wait to get home to start reading them. I was bereft when I realized I had read them all and I'd never have that feeling again!

Smell of fresh cut grass, open bathroom window - my turkey & beans - sm

When DH mows the lawn the smell always reminds me of waking up on Saturday mornings to the smell and sound of mom or dad mowing the grass. My cousin (who died 3 years ago would spend Friday and Sat nights and he and I (we were 3 years apart) would get up and make a Fluff & peanut butter & banana sandwich and watch cartoons and play.

Open bathroom window with fresh air coming in reminds me of all the visits we used to make to DH's grandparents apartment on weekends and how much fun we had being with them.

My turkey & beans - smell fills the house and smells just like my grandma's (also now passed on) house on Sunday when we would go visit them for Sunday dinners. She was Puerto Rican and always made her famous chicken and rice.

Those are only a couple I can think of right now.

Famous Chicken and Rice - SAM

Love your post...My aunt was also PR and made chicken and rice, but I was never able to get her recipe.

Do you happen to have your aunt's recipe and, if so, would you be willing to share it? And perhaps your turkey and bean recipe, too?

Thanks so much!

Recipes - my turkey & beans - sm

I asked my dad a few times if he had my grandma's (his mom's) recipe for her chicken and rice. He said sadly he never did get it, but he said he remembers she threw in everything but the kitchen sink. Well I don't remember everything, but I remember she it had peas, olives and pimentos in it. She also used uncle Bens rice which I was not a fan of, but the flavor was so good. I remember watching an episode with Bobby Flay's Showdown and he made it. It looked exactly like what I remember. I did find a recipe and looking at the ingredients this might be it. I have not made it, so unsure, but I see olives, peas, and pimentos in the ingredients

I remember going to my grandma & grandpas for Sunday dinner. There was our family (mom dad & 2 girls), my uncle, aunt and his 3 boys and my aunt uncle and their 5 boys. Then my uncle Julio would surprise us and show up unannounced with his family. Huge family gatherings on Sunday. Grandma made chicken and rice and grandpa made lemon meringue pies. MMMMM

Here is my turkey and bean dish that the smell of it reminds me of my grandma's chicken and rice. So very very easy, fast and cheap.

1 turkey breast cut into bite size pieces.
1 can S&W white beans
1 can S&W Italian cut tomatoes (with garlic basil and oregon)

Taco seasoning
Garlic powder
Basil
Salt & peper

You can substitute ground turkey for the turkey breast, but we like the turkey breast the best (stays more moist)

I've never measured the seasonings. I just pour in. If I have to guess I'd say 1 TBS taco seasoning, 1 tsp basal, 1/2 tsp garlic powder and a shake or two of salt and pepper. It is all to your taste.

Brown the turkey in olive oil. Don't overcook it. Add the can of beans and tomatoes juice and all. Simmer til hot and bubbly. Serve with rice.

That's it. Takes about 5 minutes to cook. I simmer it maybe 5 or 10 minutes. I think the meal costs something like 6 or 7 dollars and it lasts us 2 nights (there are 2 of us). Cheap and fast and tastes so good. We do a lot of seasoning once we get it on our plate too. It's all to your taste.

We have this probable twice a week because it tastes so good (and quick to make)

Hope you try it. It's really good.

Every year when August approaches I get thrown back to a quiet time with the newborn sleeping in the day and I'm lying on the couch listening to the drone of the fan and just feeling so content!

Nostalgic aroma - nice thing to think about

My parents were divorced when we kids were young, and every other weekend we'd get to be with our dad (there were 4 of us, so 2 would go each weekend). Often we'd go to a White Sox baseball game and dad would get a beer. To this day, often the smell of beer will take me back to those delightful times with dad. Still love baseball, and the aroma of beer; but the taste not so much.

Feeling Sorry For MyselfDec 07, 2011
So, it's been a really rough 6 months for my family (such as it is). We have lost an uncle, best friend, another friend, father, a dog (16 years old), a cat (15 years old) and a bird (28 years old).  Never mind all the "fun" of being an MT.  After sitting in this grief/pity party for ourselves, my DH and I decided that celebrating Christmas was just too much to bear. After much thought, I decided to check out this website I found and now instead of sitting around feeling out of so ...

I'm Feeling DownApr 03, 2010
Do ya ever just get down in the dumps and don't know why.  Things just hit/get to me at times and lately been feeling more stressed.  Feel like I'm going to be working til I keel over in my chair from old age.  Never enough money, only one in the family working (economic reasons), no kids, no family, no relatives, no friends.  I don't go to church and don't want to go to church.  My hair is thinning, and my face is breaking out like I'm going thr ...

Here Is My Feeling...Aug 31, 2012
Look at all the people who have been "mentors" in Ovomits life. A fanatic religious man, a communist who influenced him as a mentor at age 9 on - my feeling is that this man has been raised, schooled and groomed throughout his lifetime by people who wanted him in charge to destroy this country so the U.S. is no longer a force to be reckoned with. He care nothing for the legal citizens in this country (probably not being one himself), ignores the will of the American people to push is own agend ...

Feeling Sad About ThisDec 11, 2014
I know a lot of people, myself included, who at various times in our lives have made the comment they wish Christmas was over.  I am sad to say this year is the first year I have no "Christmas feeling" whatsoever, and I don't want to acknowledge it at all.  I am struggling both financially and emotionally picking up a few gifts for just a handful of people, just because I know they are buying for me.  I have been through the worst 18 months of my life, and it has taken a trem ...

Feeling About As Low As I Can BeNov 18, 2016
Had 2nd interview yesterday for a part-time job.  Felt confident after 1st interview.  Was tolld after 2nd that they would call me Thursday afternoon or Friday morning.  Here iit is early Friday afternoon and NO CALL.  I was willing to work overnight hours too.  My age works against me.  They all want the young ones.  I am getting desparate and not afraid ot do any type of job.  Behind on all my bills.  Looking for a silver lining.  Been praying ...

Are You Feeling The Gas Pinch?Apr 20, 2011
I average only 14 gallons of gas per month.  At $3.70 a gallon, that is over $51 a month.  I walk my child to school.  I combine trips.  It isn't unusual for my car not to move only one day a week, and I still find it hard to accept the cost of adding gas to my car.  Forget about being in a relationship - it's too expensive!  My cost to telecommute to work is less than $40 a month for my internet service although costs for electricity are probably higher t ...

Feeling Horribly AnxiousSep 09, 2010
I just need to connect with someone right now.  I am alone, and in about 45 minutes I am going up to my stepfather's to help him get our parrot out of her very big cage into the little cage we use when she has to leave the house.  She fights it every time, hangs onto the bars and screams.   We must take her today to have her nails trimmed.  They are very long and I am afraid she will get caught on the bars when she climbs and plays.  It is long overdue.  M ...

Disappointed, But Feeling Silly About ItNov 16, 2012
Okay, this is going to sound REALLY stupid and childish and I hope after a long week you  get a laugh from this.  I can't tell my dear sweet hubbie because he meant good, but I have to tell someone.  He did the grocery shopping today.  He comes home and I see a container of mint ice cream (I gag thinking of it, but its his favorite), so I'm so excited he bought ice cream.  Been in the mood for a bowl of ice cream.  I keep emptying the bags putting food awa ...

Heavy Duty Here Again (least Feeling That Way)Feb 13, 2013
Been looking on line and then called pharmacist just to back up quitting the Metformin cold turkey. Told the pharmacist went on 500, now up to 1500 and gained 6 lbs in 5 weeks. She told me, yes you can gain that much in a week. I feel like a dunce now- first the NP telling me I could not lose 50 lbs overnight and now the pharmacist telling me I could gain that much in a week. I am going to have to go back to school because the statements being made today are just so much over my head (NOT). I ha ...

For Cat Lovers, Feeling GuiltyJun 04, 2013
I just found out my 2nd cat in 10 years likely has a cryptococcal fungal infection.  The 1st one I did the whole treatment, surgery, biopsy, blood titers, fluconazole (150 bucks a month for a year), cost me over $2000.  She got better, but about 6 months later, it came back and I could not afford to treat her anymore.  I put all that cost on my credit cards. Well fast forward, I now have another cat with the same thing.  Saw the vet (different one) and he wants to do a biops ...

Feeling Guilty About Sick HusbandFeb 28, 2011
My husband had terrible lower back pain and went to the doctor last week and was told he most likely had sciatica. He was given a prescription for hydrocodone/APAP and told he could also use ibuprofen and to try resting and using ice for relief. It has been over a week and my husband is still in pain. I know sciatica can be terrible, but the thing iis that my husband is making no effort to try to get better, at least that's how it seems to me. When I ask him if the hydrocodone is ...

Feeling All Warm, Fuzzy, And Tingly Apr 06, 2011
The fact that Kloppenburg was UNKNOWN two months ago and has all but beaten a 14 year incumbent, goes to show how far out of touch the Republican T-Party is with the working people of Wisconsin.  Only five other Supreme Count incumbents have been ousted by a challenger in the history of Wisconsin. It will almost certainly go to recount, but Scott Walker has been put on notice that he will be recalled.  Good going Wisconsin! ...

Feeling Like A Bad Mother - Can't Afford PreschoolDec 30, 2013
I have a 4-year-old who I would love to put in preschool, but I cannot afford it.  I'm on my state's waiting list for childcare assistance as well as the waiting list for Head Start.  I've been told I will be on the list for probably 2 years, by which time she will be in kindergarten.  I can't even afford half days or just one day a week.  I feel like a terrible mother because I can't afford preschool and she is going to be behind when she goes to kin ...
